His last hike was Mount Annapurna, in Asia’s snowcapped Himalayas. At 26,545 feet, its peak is the 10th highest in the world. It is the mountain that inspired him to start climbing.
“It tends to be the trickiest, the most dangerous,” said Viesturs. “There’s no simple way to climb it. There are threatening avalanches(雪崩) and ice falls that protect the mountain.”
In high school, Viesturs read French climber Maurice Herzog’s tale of climbing the icy Annapurna. Herzog’s story was of frostbite(冻伤) and difficulty and near-death experiences. Viesturs was hooked right away.

Tehe pioneering climber talks about mountains as if they were living creatures that should be treated with respect. “You have to use all of your senses, all of your abilities to see if the mountain will let you climb it.” Said Viesturs. “If we have the patience and the respect, and if we’re here at the right time, under the right circumstances, they allow us to go up, and allow us to come down.”

Without fur or hair, most mnmmals(animals of class secreting milk to feel young) would be pretty uncomfortable. That’s because a furry covering protects mammals’ bodies from the weather, keeping them warm and dry.
Of the 5,000 kinds of wild mammals, only a few are nearly hairless. These creatures developed other ways to grow comfortably.
Many animals grow in their near-nakedness (naked: without covering). Elephants rhinos, and hippos don’t have fur. They all live in hot places. Being practically hairless is one way these animals deal with the heat. They use mud, dust, and water to protect their skin from sunburn. Whales spend all of their time underwater. Their body fat keeps them warm. Naked mole rats live entirely underground, where the temperature stays warm year-round.
Hair has a special importance for some animals. If it’s long and colourful, or short and cropped in different shapes, it can attract lots of attention from the opposite sex. Think about that the next time you see a male lion’s mane(鬃毛) at the zoo or a teenager with a spiked (麦穗) Mohawk hairstyle at the mall!
Some people call humans “naked apes”. That’s not entirely accurate, though. An adult human’s body is covered with about five million hairs-----the same number that an adult gorilla has.
However, human hairs is generally shorter and thinner than gorilla hair. You may have to look closely to see the hairs on most of your body.

A.Most mammals feel pretty comfortable due to fur or hair.
B.Rhinos, and hippos often live in hot places.
C.Gorilla hair is generally longer and thicker than human hair.
D.Humans are “naked apes”.

In a time a low academic achievement by children in the United States, many Americans are turning to Japan for possible answers. However, the answers provided by Japanese preschools are not the ones Americans expected to find. In most Japanese preschools, surprisingly little importance is put on academic instruction. In one investigation, only 2% of the Japanese respondents (答问卷者)listed “to give children a good start academically” as one of their top three reasons for a society to have preschools. On the contrary, over half the American respondents chose this as one of their top three choices. To prepare children for successful profession in first grade and beyond, Japanese schools do not teach reading, writing, and mathematics, but rather skills such as persistence, concentration, and the ability to function as a member of a group. The majority of young Japanese children are taught to read at home by their parents.
In the recent comparison of Japanese and American preschool education, 91 percent of Japanese respondents chose providing children with a group experience as one of their top three reasons for society to have preschools. Sixty-two percent of the more individually-oriented (强调个性发展的)Americans listed group experience as one of their top three choices. The importance of the group in Japanese early childhood education continues into elementary (初级的) school education.
Some Japanese parents believe that if their young children attend a university-based program, it will increase the children’s chances of eventually being admitted to top-rated schools and universities. Several more progressive programs have introduced free play as a way out for the heavy intellectualizing in some Japanese kindergartens.

Scratchy throats, stuffy (堵塞) noses and body aches all result in discomfort, but being able to tell if the cause is a cold or flu may make a difference in how long the discomfort lasts, because the drugs available for the flu need to be taken soon after the illness sets in. As for colds, the sooner a person starts taking over the medications available, the sooner relief will come.
The common cold and the flu are both caused by viruses. More than 200 viruses can cause cold symptoms, while the flu is caused by three viruses---flu A, B and C. There is no cure for either illness, but the flu can be prevented by the flu vaccine (疫苗), which is, for most people, the best way to fight the flu, according to the ALA.
But if the flu does strike, quick action can help. Although the flu and common cold have many similarities, there are some obvious signs to look for.
Cold symptoms such as stuffy nose, runny nose and scratchy throat typically develop gradually, and adults and teens often do not get a fever. On the other hand, fever is one of the characteristic features of the flu for all ages. And in general, flu symptoms including fever and coldness, painful throat and body aches come on suddenly and are more worrying than cold symptoms.
The ALA notes that it may be particularly difficult to tell when babies and preschool age children have the flu. It advises parents to call the doctor if their small children have flu-like symptoms.
Both cold and flu symptoms can be eased with the medications as well. However, children and teens with a cold or flu should not take aspirin for pain relief because of the risk of Reye syndrome(综合症).
There is, of course, no vaccine for the common cold. But frequent hand washing and avoiding close contact with people who have colds can reduce the probability catching one.
68. According to the author, knowing the cause of the discomfort will help________.
A.prevent people from catching colds and the flu
B.the patient obtain cheaper drugs
C.the patient buy medicine
D.shorten the period of the illness
69.We learn from the passage that ________.
A.the drugs available can be taken to ease the discomfort caused by a cold or the flu
B.one doesn’t need to take any medicine if he has a cold or the flu
C.aspirin should not be included in the medicines for the flu
D.delayed treatment of the flu will harm the liver and central nervous system
70.According to the passage, to fight against the flu effectively, one should________.

B.identify the virus which causes it
C.consult a doctor as soon as possible
D.remain watchful when the disease is spreading

Birthdays often involve surprises. But this year’s surprise on the birthday of the great British playwright William Shakespeare is surely one of the most dramatic.
On April 22, one day before his 441st birthday anniversary, experts discovered that one of the most recognizable portraits of William Shakespeare is a fake (赝品).
This means that we no longer have a good idea of what Shakespeare looked like.
“It’s very possible that many pictures of Shakespeare might be unreliable because many of them are copies of this one,” said an expert from Britain’s National Portrait Gallery.
The discovery comes after four months of testing using X-rays, ultraviolet light, microphotography and paint samples.
Experts from the gallery say the image---commonly known as the “Flower portrait”---was actually painted in the 1800s, about two centuries after Shakespeare’s death.
The art experts who work at the gallery say they also used modern chemistry technology to check the paint on the picture. These checks found traces of paint dating from about 1814.
Shakespeare died in 1616, and the date that appears on the portrait is 1609.
“We now think the portrait dates back to around 1818 to 1840. This was when there was a renewed interest in Shakespeare’s plays.” Tarnya Cooer, the gallery’s curator(馆长), told the Associated President.
The fake picture has often been used as a cover for collections of his plays. It is called the Flower portrait because one of its owners, Desmond Flower, gave it to the Royal Shakespeare Company.
“There have always been questions about the painting,” said David Howells, curator for the Royal Shakespeare Company. “Now we know the truth, we can put the image in its proper place in the history of Shakespearean portraiture.”
Two other images of Shakespeare, are also being studied as part of the investigation (调查) and the results will come out later this month. ________________________________________________________________.

B.The Flower portrait has been found to be a fake.
C.Three portraits of Shakespeare are being tested to identify a real one
D.It was found that there was a renewed interest in Shakespeare’s plays around 1818 to 1840
74.How many methods were used to test the portrait
A.Not mentioned.
B.Two.
C.Three.
D.At least four.
75.Which is the best sentence to fill in the blank in the last paragraph
A.Soon we’ll know which portrait is reliable.

Dear Tom’
Hello! I’m glad to send you an e-mail to you that I’m getting more and more interested in English.
However, in the past, I thought learning English meant grammar rules and words by heart. I didn’t like to read or speak English, nor was I willing to practise talking with talking with my classmates in English.
Now, with my English teacher’s help, I have realized that we learn to speak English by speaking as we learn to sing by singing. I have begun to enjoy speaking English and communicating with my classmates. I often read some new articles or look for some information on the Internet. As a result, I have become more and more interested in English and made great progress in English.
To learn English better, I…..
Yours sincerely
