Girly, pretty, with long dark hair, 18 year old Katie Leung from Scotland is sure to arouse much excitement among Harry Potter fans this month.
The fourth film adaptation (改编) of the wildly popular J. K. Rowling books, "Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire" (《哈利·波特与火焰杯》) is released on November 18. Katie is about to burst onto the big screen as the girl Cho Chang who wins Harry Potter’s heart.
Katie’s scenes in the film are set around the Hogwarts Yule Ball (圣诞舞会). Harry plucks up courage to ask Cho to the dance. But Cho has a boyfriend and she must turn Harry down.
"I think she’s a really loyal person," Katie says of her character. "The scenes where Harry is gazing at Cho from afar are fun. Cho sees Harry looking and gives him a look back. He then thinks he’s got a chance, but he hasn’t. "
The story of Katie becoming Cho also has fairytale qualities. She went to the initial audition (初试) in London after her dad saw an advertisement on a Chinese TV channel. The actress had to be 16, which Katie was at the time, and of Eastern appearance. When the director asked: "Who’s from Scotland " Katie was the only one who put her hand up.
Although Katie had no previous acting experience, not even in a school play, she beat 5,000 hopefuls and won the role.
"I felt pretty confident but that was only because I was treating the auditions as a bit of fun. I’m not the kind of girl who’s always dreamed of being an actress," Katie said.
"I’m the shy type, really. At school I could go without talking to anyone for days and days. I was so shy that it was unbelievable and it never occurred to me that I could get into this business.
"Katie isn’t calling herself an actress just yet, although she won praise from Daniel Radcliffe (who plays Harry) for her performance, who described her as a "natural".
Cho and Harry’s relationship develops in later books, but Katie doesn’t know if she’ll be in the next film.
"I’d like to do more acting, but if ‘Goblet of Fire’ turns out to be my only film then I think it would be pretty cool to be known as Harry Potter’s first crush," she said.
56. From the text, what can we know about the girl, Katie Leung
A. Before the play she played, everybody thought that she would be an actress because of her beauty.
B. She plays as Harry Potter’s first crush.
C. She has no confidence when she was in the initial audition.
D. She will play another girl in next ‘Goblet of Fire’.
45%57. Why does the director choose Katie Leung as Cho Chang, who wins Harry Potter’s heart
A. Because she played very well in the initial audition.

C. Because she was treating the auditions seriously.
D. Because she is a really loyal person.

B. In the play she played so well that she was praised by Daniel Radcliffe.

"I sat--in at a restaurant for six months, and when they finally agreed to serve me, they didn't have what I wanted" -------so went a famous line. In reality, the sit- in movement was not a joke. It began in Greensboro, North Carolina, at 4:30 P.M. on the afternoon of February 1, 1960. On that day, Ezell Blair Jr. ,Joseph McNeil, David Richmond, and Franklin McClain entered an F.W. Woolworth store. They sat down at a segregated lunch counter(隔离的午餐桌), ordered coffee, and then refused to leave when told, "We don't serve Negroes."
The four young men had expected not to be served. What no one had expected, however, was that they would sit there and politely, but firmly, refuse to leave. This was 1960, and throughout the South black people were not allowed to sit at the same lunch counters with whites, swim at the same beaches, use the same water fountains, or worship at the same churches. Segregation was the law, and it meant separation of the races in every way.
The next day, the four returned to Woolworth's --this time accompanied by sixteen other students. Again they sat at the lunch counter and requested service. Again they were refused. And again, they declined to leave. On Wednesday, February 3, seventy students filled the Woolworth's store. This time, the group included white students as well as black. Many brought school books and studied while they waited. By this time, their protest had become known nationwide as a "sit--in'.
On Thursday, there was trouble. An angry group of white--teenagers began shoving (推挤) and cursing(痛骂)them but were quickly removed by the police. By February 10, the sit--in movement had spread to five other states.
By September 1961 ,more than 70,000 people, both black and white, had joined in sit--ins at segregated restaurants and lunch counters, kneel--ins at segregated churches, read--ins at segregated libraries, and swim--ins at segregated pools and beaches. Over 3,600 people had been arrested, and more than 100 students had been expelled(开除). But they were getting results. Many places did agree to integrate(使成为整体). On June 10, 1964, the U.S. Senate passed a major civil rights bill outlawing racial discrimination (种族歧视 ) in all public places. President Lyndon Johnson signed it on July 2, and it became law. But the highest credit (称赞) still goes to the four brave students from North Carolina who first sat--in and waited it out.
60. Choose the sentence that best states the main idea of the reading passage.
A. Segregation was the law in the South.
B. The first sit--in was in 1960.
C. The sit--ins helped to end segregation.
D. The black students made trouble with the bosses of the restaurants.

62. Which statement can be inferred from the fifth paragraph in the reading
A. The sit--in movement was not successful.
B. The sit--in movement had active results.
C. Only black people joined in sit--ins.
D. The sit--in movement was almost a failure.
63. Based on the information in the reading, you can infer that at a swim--in, people_________.
A. refused to leave a segregated swimming pool.
B. refused to swim at a segregated swimming pool.
C. refused to go to a segregated swimming pool.
D. refused to dive under water at a swimming pool.

The last two decades of the nineteenth century were the time of the great Mars boom, a period when, as an observer noted, “Public foolishness and reporters combined to flood the papers and society with news from Mars.” The boom began in 1877 with Giovanni Schiaparelli’s discovery of a net-work of straight lines on the red planet, which he called canals. When the Italian word was translated into English and other languages as canals, the public enthusiastically(狂热) responded to the implication of intelligent life, and men like Flammarion, Lowell, and Pickering developed elaborate(精细) theories about Mars and its inhabitants. The nebular(星云) hypothesis indicated to those scientists that the outermost planets were the oldest because they were the first formed; the theory of evolution suggested that, if life began on another world, intelligent forms would eventually be produced and, given enough time, creatures superior to man would be evolved. The people of Mars had to be just such advanced beings in order to have built the great systems of canals which conserved their aging world’s decreasing supply of water.
Writers turned out dozens of stories with the idea that Martian civilization exceeded our own. In those stories nationalism had long before disappeared on Mars, and the planet was united as one world. The Martians were usually pictured as similar to the men on earth, though they were physically stronger and much more intelligent----only a few stories described Martians who had evolved into a non human form. Forced by the increasingly adverse conditions of their older world, the Martians brought science and technology to a level of development which emerged before man on Earth as a distant ideal. Great advances were made in harnessing(利用…产生动力) electricity and electromagnetic waves; radio, television, and instruments for viewing past events were already realities. Submarines, airplanes, automobiles, and conveyor-belt highways revolutionized transportation, automation existed not only in daily life but also in manufacturing and food production. Cities became beautiful at last because of the intelligent utilization of such building materials as concrete, aluminum, and glass.
48%64. With what subject is the passage mainly concerned

42% 66. According to the passage, what is NOT true of the theory of evolution
A. The people of Mars couldn’t be superior to those of Earth as the latter had also built the systems of canals
B. Intelligent forms of life would emerge at last if there were life on Mars.
C. Creatures more intelligent than man would appear in the future.
D. Mars had a long history and it might have intelligent life like that on Earth.
36% 67. The underlined word “adverse” could best be replaced by which of the following A. disadvantageous. B. aging C. advanced. D. dangerous

What is the importance of the Afro-American history to all Americans How
Afro-Americans contribute anything to American history when they were just slaves and servants This is the image many Afro-Americans have of themselves also. The Afro-Americans need to remake their real historical image so that it is known and accepted in its truthfulness by themselves and the rest of the world. Men and women of darker color are human beings entitled to respect and acceptance in history.
When we think of famous scientists and inventors we immediately think of men such as Alexander Graham Bell, Thomas Edison and Jonas E. Salk. This is because we associate famous people with the AngloSaxon race. But what about the Afro-American inventors and scientists How many men during World War Ⅰ owe their lives to Garrett Morgan who invented the gas mask Garrett Morgan also invented the traffic light which saves numerous lives on our streets. Daniel Hale Williams was the first successful heart surgeion. Charles Drew saved hundreds of thousands of lives during World War Ⅱ by his discovery of the ways and means of preserving blood plasma. Percy Julian has helped millions suffering from the excruciating pain of arthritis. These men and others should be as easily recognized as Bell, Edison and Salk.
America is made up of many different blends of cultures. These many cultures have come to enrich and diversify the American way of life. We should not think, because history has neglected to include the background of a particular culture, that these people have an inferior history. We should search for the truth and set the record straight against the slanders, the stereo typing and false images which have identified these people. We should understand each of the cultures and learn of their specific contribution to America’s life story.
Only after we are taught the complete and accurate history of our great country and learn that the blending of cultures and backgrounds gives us our strength, can we go forward on the path to peace.
30%68. The function of the first paragraph is to .
A. present the main idea or the summary of the essay
B. present an introduction to the topic
C. provide background to the main theme
D. present the many cultures having contributed to American history.
33%69. Paragraph Three tells us that .
A. we should oppose slander and stereo typing
B. the American way of life is richer because it is made up of many cultures
C. some cultures have been completely neglected
D. Afro-Americans have an inferior history
70. The underlined word “ image” refers to .
A. picture B. portray C. impression D. similar
71. The main idea of the passage is .
A. There are many Afro-Americans who are famous as scientists and inventors
B. Many Afro-Americans have devoted to American history
C. Afro-American experience to American history
D. Afro-American history must be recognized as an important part of
American history.

There seems never to have been a civilization without toys, but when and how they developed is unknown. They probably came about just to give children something to do.
In the ancient world, as is today, most boys played with some kinds of toys and most girls with another. In societies where social roles are rigidly (not bendily) determined, boys pattern their play after the activities of their fathers and girls after the tasks of their mothers. This is true because boys and girls are being prepared, even in play, to step into the roles and responsibilities of the adult world.
What is remarkable about the history of toys is not so much how they changed over the centuries but how much they have remained the same. The changes have been mostly in terms of craftsmanship(技艺), mechanics, and technology. It is the universality(共同) of toys with regard to(关于) their development in all parts of the world and their persistence(持续) to the present that is amazing. In Egypt, the Americas, China, Japan and among the Arctic (北极的) peoples, generally the same kinds of toys appeared. Variations depended on local customs and ways of life because toys imitate their surroundings. Nearly every civilization had dolls, little weapons, toy soldiers, tiny animals and vehicles.
Because toys can be generally regarded as a kind of art form, they have not been subject to technological leaps that characterize inventions for adult use. The progress from the wheel to the oxcart to the automobile is a direct line of ascent (进步). The progress from a rattle (拨浪鼓) used by a baby in 3,000 BC to one used by an infant today, however, is not characterized by inventiveness. Each rattle is the product of the artistic tastes of the times and subject to the limitations of available materials.
43%72. One aspect of “the universality of toys” lies in the fact that ________.
A. technological advances have greatly improved the durability(永久) of toys
B. the improvement of craftsmanship in making toys depends on the efforts of
Universities
C. the exploration of the universe has led to the creation of new kinds of toys
D. the basic characteristics of toys are the same all over the world
32%73. Which of the following is the author’s view on the historical development of toys
  A. The craftsmanship in toy-making has remained essentially unchanged.
  B. Toys have remained basically the same all through the centuries.
  C. The toy industry has witnessed great leaps in technology in recent years.
D. Toys are playing an increasingly important role in shaping a child’s character
32%74. Regarded as a kind of art form, toys ________.
 A. follow a direct line of ascent B. also appeal greatly to(attract) adults
 C. are not characterized by technological progress
 D. reflect the pace of social progress
46%75. The author uses the example of a rattle to show that ________.
 A. in toy-making there is a continuity in the use of materials
 B. even the simplest toys can reflect the progress of technology
 C. it often takes a long time to introduce new technology into toy-making
 D. even a simple toy can mirror the artistic tastes of the time

Nowadays, the society is developing fast and many parents across China want their children to cope with this rapid change and be well prepared for their future. Beside their regular studies in schools, their parents want them to attend all kinds of other classes such as piano class, dance class, arts class, calligraphy class and chess class, laying a heavy burden on their shoulders. As a result, the children almost have no time to play.
I don't think this is right. I believe parents should let their children develop their talent by their own choice and interests and give them enough time and space to learn what they want to. So, the children can have a happy and enjoyable life.
