Dear Tom,
It's January the sixteenth. Your birthday is only two weeks away! I wish you a happy birthday! Please allow me to send you a box of Chinese green tea as a gift for your birthday.
I'd like to tell you how to make the tea. First, fill a kettle with cold water and heat the water. Wait until the water is boiling. While waiting ,place one tea spoon of tea leaves into the teapot. Then, pour the boiling water from the kettle onto the leaves in the pot. Leave for a few minutes before serving. Finally, pour the tea into a tea cup. Depending on the tea, you might add sugar, milk, or honey. Keep the pot covered with a lid to keep the tea warm, and enjoy it.
I hope you'll accept it and like it.
Truly yours
Li Ming

Text 1
M: Excuse me, Barbara, can I ask you something?
W. Yes, what is it?
M: Well, some of us are going to Shades disco tonight. Is it all right to stay out a little later?
W: How much later?
M. Until one o'clock maybe.
W: One o'clock! No, that's far too late!
M. But it doesn't start until nine thirty.
W. Well, I think a couple of hours is enough. Not later than midnight, please.
M: OK, I'll try not to be late, but you know how few buses there are at that time.
W. Well, if you leave the disco at 11: 30, you shouldn't have any problems.
Text 2
W: Have you seen this fax, Nick?
M: Why, who's it from?
W: It’s from our Swedish customers. They’re saying that the order they received today isn't right. Some of the engine parts have been left out.
M: How did that happen? Did we send the order by lorry or air?
W: We always send everything to Sweden by sea.
M: And how long will it be if we send another order by ship? At least three or four weeks, I suppose.
W. We could get another order together by Monday, and it could be with them in a week if it went by air.
M. That's what we'd better do then. I think I'll phone Sweden and apologize. What's the boss' s name? Johnson, isn't it? Does she say what she wants us to do?
W: They want us to consider lowering the price.
M: Oh, no, we can't do that.
Text 3
M. How long have you lived here?
W. Since last June... about a year.
M: Was it cold last winter?
W: Yes, it was, but not as cold as Paris. December and February were much colder than January.
M: Did you have much snow?
W: Yes. But we didn't have as much snow as you had in Paris.
M: What about the other seasons?
W: I think autumn was the most beautiful season. The days were clear and dry, and it was sunny all the time. But November was terrible. We had a lot of rain.
M: What was last spring like?
W: It wasn't very nice. But May was nicer than March and April.
M: What's summer like?
W: It was wonderful.
Text 4
M: Did you take these pictures? They are very good.
W: I think they turned out well too. I like to take my camera with me wherever I go. If I see something interesting, I can snap a picture of it.
M: Carrying a big camera around is too much trouble for me.
W: My camera is really small though, here, let me show you.
M: That's a compact camera. It's very nice.
W: And it's simple to operate.
M: Is a camera like yours very expensive?
W: Less than you expect. Why don't you check the price at Haze Fields down the street? This model was on sale there last week.
M: I think I will go to have a look.
Text 5
Scientists would like to place a huge mirror in space above the earth. It might be sixty miles wide. It would be used to catch the rays of the sun. It would direct the sun's rays upon the earth as a child might do to make sunlight dance on the wall with a hand minor. Why do they do this? The sun's rays could be helpful in many ways. They could light up cities by night. The warm rays could stop frosts which might come at night and hurt fruit crops. They could melt dangerous icebergs in the ocean. Perhaps they could change cloud movements and bring rain where it is needed.
Text 6
M: What can I do for you?
W: Good morning! I have decided to study abroad for a year. I am here for your advice. Would you please offer me some information?
M: Well, first of all, you need to fill out a form of the application. Here is the form.
W: Ok.

The great classical composer Ludwig van Beethoven (1770--1827) was frequently ill throughout his adult life. During one attack of sickness, he wrote to his brothers, asking them to have doctors find the cause of his abdominal (腹部的) pains after he had died. One hundred and seventy--three years after Beethoven's death, doctors have an answer.
Researchers at the Health Research Institute have concluded that Beethoven suffered from plumbism(铅性), or lead poisoning. The researchers came to their conclusion after X rays and chemical analyses found large amounts of lead in a lock of Beethoven's preserved hair.
The results of the study are not surprising. Beethoven died of pneumonia(肺炎) and complications from abdominal problems, both symptoms (症状) of lead poisoning.
The doctors said they are still unsure whether plumbism was the cause of Beethoven's most famous sickness, his deafness. Plumbism is known to cause deafness in some instances. Beethoven began to lose his hearing in his late 20s and became totally deaf during the last years of his life.
The researchers are also unsure about the source of lead in Beethoven's body. They said it might have come from mineral water that Beethoven drank and swam in during his stays at spring resorts(疗养地).
When Beethoven died, mourners took so much hair from his head that he was practically hairless when he was buried. Some of that hair has remained intact(完整的). Ira Brilliant, founder of the Center of Beethoven Studies in San Jose, Calif, and Alfredo Guevara, a surgeon from Nogales, Ariz, bought some of the hair six years ago for $ 7, 300 at a London auction(拍卖). Four years ago, they submitted it to the Health Research institute for inspection.

A. Beethoven's request B. the request of Beethoven's brothers
C. two American scientists' request D. the request of the Health Research Institute
57. The source of lead in Beethoven's body seems to have come from____________.
A. the food he ate B. the water he drank C. the air he breathed in D. the places he traveled to
58. From the passage we learn that Beethoven almost lost all his hair____________.
A. owing to his hard work B. as a result of his disease
C. because of his great fame D. due to lead poisoning

Nancy Jeschkets sleeping difficulties began on vacation a few summers ago. She blamed the noisy motel room, but her sleeping did not improve at home. Instead of her usual six to seven hours a night, the 37--year--old teacher slept just three or four. "I'd toss(辗转) and turn for hours, then get up and pace, "she says.
Nancy tried going to bed earlier, but the slightest noise, even her Husband's breathing, disturbed her. She drank a glass of wine at bed-time and fell asleep immediately, but was awake two hours later. Her doctor prescribed (开药方)a sleeping pill for two weeks. When she stopped taking the pills, though ,she slept worse than ever.
Most of us have the occasional short period of troubled sleep and then return to normal a few nights later. However, for one in six people insomnia(失眠) is a continual problem.
Now the Johns Hopkins Sleep Disorders Center in Baltimore has developed a nine--step treatment to help insomniacs cure themselves. It is based on the idea that by deliberately(深思熟虑地) reducing time in bed and by modifying your waking activities, you will be able to sleep more soundly.
Psychologist Richard Allen, co- director of the Johns Hopkins Center, considers insomnia a 24- hour disorder. Thus, his treatment, which draws on research done by Arthur Spielman of the Sleep Disorders Center of the City College of New York, includes advice on daytime as well as bedtime behavior.

"I sat--in at a restaurant for six months, and when they finally agreed to serve me, they didn't have what I wanted" -------so went a famous line. In reality, the sit- in movement was not a joke. It began in Greensboro, North Carolina, at 4:30 P.M. on the afternoon of February 1, 1960. On that day, Ezell Blair Jr. ,Joseph McNeil, David Richmond, and Franklin McClain entered an F.W. Woolworth store. They sat down at a
segregated lunch counter(隔离的午餐桌), ordered coffee, and then refused to leave when told, "We don't serve Negroes."
The four young men had expected not to be served. What no one had expected, however, was that they would sit there and politely, but firmly, refuse to leave. This was 1960, and throughout the South black people were not allowed to sit at the same lunch counters with whites, swim at the same beaches, use the same water fountains, or worship at the same churches. Segregation was the law, and it meant separation of the
races in every way.
The next day, the four returned to Woolworth's --this time accompanied by sixteen other students. Again they sat at the lunch counter and requested service. Again they were refused. And again, they declined to leave. On Wednesday, February 3, seventy students filled the Woolworth's store. This time, the group included white students as well as black. Many brought school books and studied while they waited. By this time, their protest had become known nationwide as a "sit--in'.
On Thursday, there was trouble. An angry group of white--teenagers began shoving (推挤) and cursing(痛骂)them but were quickly removed by the police. By February 10, the sit--in movement had spread to five other states.
By September 1961 ,more than 70,000 people, both black and white, had joined in sit--ins at segregated restaurants and lunch counters, kneel--ins at segregated churches, read--ins at segregated libraries, and swim--ins at segregated pools and beaches. Over 3,600 people had been arrested, and more than 100 students had been expelled(开除). But they were getting results. Many places did agree to integrate(使成为整体). On June 10, 1964, the U.S. Senate passed a major civil rights bill outlawing racial discrimination (种族歧视 ) in all public places. President Lyndon Johnson signed it on July 2, and it became law. But the highest credit (称赞) still goes to the four brave students from North Carolina who first sat--in and waited it out.
72. Choose the sentence that best states the main idea of the reading passage.
A. Segregation was the law in the South.
B. The first sit--in was in 1960.
C. The sit--ins helped to end segregation.
D. The black students made trouble with the bosses of the restaurants.
73. The first four students on the first day of the sit--in_____
A. asked for lunch but were refused
B. entered into the store, ordered coffee and then left
C. were quickly removed by the police because of shoving and cursing
D. sat at a segregation lunch counter, ordered coffee, and then refused to leave
74. Which statement can be inferred from the fifth paragraph in the reading?
A. The sit--in movement was not successful.
B. The sit--in movement had active results.
C. Only black people joined in sit--ins.
D. The sit--in movement was almost a failure.
75. Based on the information in the reading, you can infer that at a swim--in, people_________.
A. refused to leave a segregated swimming pool.
B. refused to swim at a segregated swimming pool.
C. refused to go to a segregated swimming pool.
D. refused to dive under water at a swimming pool.
