Susan has liked horses ever since she was a small girl．
Today is a great day for Susan．she is taking part in a show一jumping event which will decide who is the champion rider in the south of England．All the riders have been round once．All have made a number of mistakes except Susan and another girl．They both had clear rounds．Can Susan go round again without a mistake and be－come the champion show-jumper She means to do her best to win and believes she has a good chance．At last it is her turn，and she is up on Bayard and away．She seems very calm to those who are watching but her heart is beating fast．Now she is coming to the first jump and goes over it easily．Now she forgets the crowds and doesn't feel all the eyes watching her．Now the water jump．Bayard is jumping beautifully and for a moment she hears the crowd again，but soon forgets them．Now the double fence．Bayard seems to be getting a little tired，but he is still jumping well．She is speaking to him quietly now and patting his neck；she knows he understands．He is over the other fences and now they are coming to the last and most difficult…over！The crowd is shouting．Susan is taking off her hat to the judges and riding out of the ring．She …and Bayard are the champion show－jumpers in the south of England.
