Norman Bethune was born on March3, 1890, in the small town of Graven h u r s t, Ontario. His first job was as a teacher in a small, one-room schoolhouse. Norman was a good teacher but he was also very strict．Ail of his students, learned quickly to do their lessons well and not cause too much trouble in class．
Throughout his life，Norman Bethune was never the kind of person to do something just because everyone else was doing it．To put it in another way, Norman was “independent”．This was shown even at the age of six．One day Norman took a walk into the city of Toronto and back again a total distance of about 15 kilometers．He had a great time walking through the busy streets of this big city，gazing up at its tall buildings and beautiful churches, exploring the many shops，full of interesting items．He was not aware of that, back at home，his mother and father were almost worried to death by his disappearance，They had even called the police to help to look for him．When he returned at eight o'clock that evening，his relieved though angry parents punished him heavily for his adventurous journey．
