35 Sending Messages
It is not necessary to write to send messages．In the old days，people who could not write used to send messages to one another in many different ways．
The Indians used smoke to send signals，They made a fire and put wet grass on it. Then they covered the fire with a wet blanket. After a few moments, they took the blanket away again. This could send simple messages in this way. One cloud of smoke meant “Danger.” Two clouds meant “Everything is all right.” Three clouds meant “Help！”
In the thick forest of Africa，it used to be difficult to travel from village to village．But drums could be heard from many miles away．People in this part of the world discovered that they could use their drums for sending messages，They made their drums “speak” like people．
They did this by playing tunes that sounded like simple sentences in their languages．The Incas of South America never developed a way of writing their language，but they used to send messages by tying knots in rope．Men used to run with such knotted ropes from town to town along the Incas roads．Many of these rope messages have been found，but nobody can understand what they mean．
