After the singing competition "Super Girls' Voice", Zhou Bichang declared that she would quit the "Super Girls' tour and would go back to school studying. Some students think her choice is wise. They think the tour takes up too much time and energy. As she is still a student who should concentrate on her study at present, taking part in the concerts is not good for her further progress.
On the other hand, the others think it is unwise for her to quit the tour. They think that the performances offer a wonderful stage to her to show her singing talents in public. Taking part in the tour can also make her gain more musical experience, which will contribute a lot to her future musical career. What's more, she should think more of her fans, not only of herself. She should not let her fans disappointed.
In my opinion, I think that if I were her, I would choose to quit the tour. Anyway, learning at school is more important to one's life experience. With more knowledge, Zhou will surely be more successful, which means a brighter future for her.

Dear Catharine,
I’m very glad to receive your letter. In your letter, you asked me what Chinese would do on Mother’s Day.Here I would like to introduce something to you.
To begin with,we will help mothers do some housework, such as tidying the rooms or washing some clothes, for we are very thankful for all the work they have done for us.It’s high time that they should take a rest. What’s more,we’d like to send them some gifts including flowers and beautiful dresses, wishing mothers to be much younger and happier.Further more,we are going to write them cards to tell them how much they mean to us,and that we’ll go all out to live up to their expectations.
Personally,on Mother’s Day,I want to take my mother to pay a visit to the park near my home and after that I will ask her to go to the theatre. You know, Mother has little time to spend on such things. It takes most of her spare time to take care of me and my brother. How great Mother is!
Have you got any ideas Look forward to your reply.Best wishes.
Yours truly,
Wang Ping

The students of our school had a discussion about whether listening test in the National Matriculation English Test should be kept or canceled. Some students think that listening test should not be canceled. They insist listening is among the four basic skills. We therefore can not ignore it. Besides, listening is one of the important channels for us to get information from the outside world. So it should be strengthened today when international cooperation is becoming more and more frequent. But others don’t agree. They think not everyone has to communicate with foreigners in the future. Moreover, listening test is unfair to the students in the areas where radio signals cannot be picked up effectively. And for certain reasons, there is a big difference in teachers and equipment between the countryside and the city.

Ladies and gentlemen,
I’m Li Hua. Today, I’m greatly honored to speak here on behalf of my school. I’m going to talk about the high school education of my city.
From chart 1, we can see high school students are from different family backgrounds. Besides local students, who make up 91%, eight percent of the students are the children of non-local workers. There are even I percent of foreign students.
According to chart 2, the students’ choices after graduation have presented a wider variety. 60%of them intend to go to university. 30% choose to enter vocational schools, and the rest ten percent plan to go abroad for further studies.
①I think, we have more freedom to choose what we would like to do after graduation. Going to college is no longer the only choice for most of us as it was years ago.
②I think, our city government has made more effort to help the non-local workers. For example, their children can enjoy the equal right of a good education with the local city students.
③I think, with the economic development of our city, more foreigners are attracted to set up business and they are happy to send their children to local schools to learn more about China and Chinese cultures.
I believe the future of education in our city is promising

When John Milton, writer of “Paradise Lost”, entered Cambridge University, in 1625, he was already skilled in Latin after seven years of studying it as his second language at St. Paul’s School, London. Like all English boys who prepared for college in grammar schools, he had learned not only to read Latin but also to speak and write it smoothly and correctly. His pronunciation of Latin was English, however, and seemed to have sounded strange to his friends when he later visited Italy.
Schoolboys gained their skill in Latin in a bitter way. They kept in mind the rules to make learning by heart easier. They first made a word -for -word translation and then an idiomatic translation into English. As they increased their skill, they translated their English back into Latin without referring to the book and then compared their translation with the original. The schoolmaster was always at hand to encourage them. All schoolmasters believed Latin should be beaten in.
After several years of study, the boys began to write compositions in imitation of the Latin writers they read. And as they began to read Latin poems, they began to write poems in Latin. Because Milton was already a poet at ten, his poems were much better than those painfully put together by the other boys. During the seven years Milton spent at university, he made regular use of his command of Latin. He wrote some excellent Latin poems, which he published among his works in 1645.

B. The schoolmaster usually stood beside the schoolboys with a stick in his hand.
C. The schoolboys could repeat Latin grammar rules from memory.

5.What is the meaning of the underlined part“ Latin should be beaten in”that the writer wishes you to understand

The way people hold to the belief that a fun - filled, pain free life equals happiness actually reduces their chances of ever attaining real happiness. If fun and pleasure are equal to happiness then pain must be equal to unhappiness. But in fact, the opposite is true: more often than not things that lead to happiness involve some pain.
As a result, many people avoid the very attempts that are the source of true happiness. They fear the pain inevitably brought by such things as marriage, raising children, professional achievement, religious commitment , self - improvement.
Ask a bachelor(单身汉) why he resists marriage even though he finds dating to be less and less satisfying. If he is honest he will tell you that he is afraid of making a commitment. For commitment is in fact quite painful. The single life is filled with fun, adventure, excitement. Marriage has such moments, but they are not its most distinguishing features.
Couples with infant children are lucky to get a whole night’s sleep or a three - day vacation. I don’t know any parent who would choose the word fun to describe raising children. But couples who decide not to have children never know the joys of watching a child grow up or of playing with a grandchild.
Understanding and accepting that true happiness has nothing to do with fun is one of the most liberating realizations. It liberates time: now we can devote more hours to activities that can genuinely increase our happiness. It liberates money: buying that new car or those fancy clothes that will do nothing to increase our happiness now seems pointless. And it liberates us from envy: we now understand that all those who are always having so much fun actually may not be happy at all.
6.According to the author, a bachelor resists marriage chiefly because ________ .
A. he is reluctant to take on family responsibilities
B. he believes that life will be more cheerful if he remains single
C. he finds more fun in dating than in marriage
D. he fears it will put an end to all his fun adventure and excitement
7.Raising children, in the author’s opinion is ________ .
A. a moral duty B. a thankless job C. a rewarding task D. a source of inevitable pain
8.From the last paragraph, we learn that envy sometimes stems from ________ .
A. hatred B. misunderstanding C. prejudice D. ignorance
9.To understand what true happiness is one must ________ .
A. have as much fun as possible during one’s lifetime
B. make every effort to liberate oneself from pain
C. put up with pain under all circumstances
D. be able to distinguish happiness from fun
10.What is the author trying to tell us
A. Happiness often goes hand in hand with pain.B. One must know how to attain happiness.
C. It is important to make commitments. D. It is pain that leads to happiness.

A thief who dropped a winning lottery ticket (彩票) at the scene of his crime has been given a lesson in honesty. His victim, who picked up the ticket, then claimed the $ 25,000 prize, managed to trace him, and handed over the cash. The robbery happened when maths professor Vinicio Sabbatucei, 58, was changing a tyre on an Italian motorway. Another motorist, who stopped “to help”, stole a suitcase from his car and drove off. The professor found the dropped ticket and put it in his pocket before driving home to Ascoli in eastern Italy.
The next day, he saw the lottery results on TV and, taking out the ticket, realized it was a winner. He claimed the 60 million lire (里拉) prize. Then he began a battle with his conscience. I was 9 years old when I found out my father was ill. It was 1994, but I can remember my mother’s words as if it were yesterday: “Kerrel, I don’t want you to take food from your father, because he has AIDS. Be very careful when you are around him.”
AIDS wasn’t something we talked about in my country when I was growing up. From then on, I knew that this would be a family secret. My parents were not together anymore, and my dad lived alone. For a while, he could take care of himself. But when I was 12, his condition worsened. My father’s other children lived far away, so it fell to me to look after him.
We couldn’t afford all the necessary medication for him, and because Dad was unable to work, I had no money for school supplies and often couldn’t even buy food for dinner. I would sit in class feeling completely lost, the teacher’s words muffled as I tried to figure out how I was going to manage.
I did not share my burden (负担) with anyone. I had seen how people reacted to AIDS. Kids laughed at classmates who had parents with the disease. And even adults could be cruel. When my father was moved to the hospital, the nurses would leave his food on the bedside table even though he was too weak to feed himself.
I had known that he was going to die, but after so many years of keeping his condition a secret. I was completely unprepared when he reached his final days. Sad and hopeless, I called a woman at the nonprofit National AIDS Support. That day, she kept me on the phone for hours. I was so lucky to find someone who cared. She saved my life.
I was 15 when my father died. He took his secret away with him, having never spoken about AIDS to anyone, even me. He didn’t want to call attention to AIDS. I do.

How can you find out what is going on inside a person's body without opening the patient's body up Regular X rays can show a lot. CAT scans(扫描仪)can show even more. They can give a complete view of body organs(器官).
What is a CAT scan CAT stands for a kind of machine. It is a special X-ray machine that gets a 360---degree picture of a small area of a patient's body.
Doctors use X rays to study and determine diseases and injuries within the body. X rays can find a foreign object inside the body or take pictures of some inside organs to be X-rayed.
A CAT scanner, however. uses a group of X rays to give a cross一sectional view of a specific part of the body. A fine group of X rays is scanned across the body and around the patient from many different directions. A computer studies the information from each direction and produces a clear cross-sectional picture on a screen. This picture is then photographed for later use. Several cross sections, taken one after another, can give clear photos of the entire body or of any body organs. The newest CAT scanners can even give clear pictures of active, moving organs, just as a fast-action camera can" stop the action",giving clear pictures of, what appears unclear to the eye. And because of the 360一degree pictures,CAT scans show clear and complete views of organs in a manner that was once only shown during operation or examination of a dead patient.
Frequent appearance before X rays can cause skin burns, cancer or other damage to the body. Yet CAT scans actually don't cause the patient to more radiation(辐射)than regular X rays do. CAT scans can also be done without getting something harmful into the patient, so they are less risky than regular X rays.
CAT scans provide exact, detailed information. They can quickly find such a thing as bleeding inside the brain. They are helping to save lives.
51. What is NOT true of a CAT scan
A. It is safer than regular X rays.
B. It makes use of computer techniques.
C. It can stop the action of an organ for a short time.
D. It gives clear pictures of active, moving body parts.

A. a badly injured part inside the body
B. a new thing that is unknown to the doctor
C. a strange organ that has grown in the body
D. an object that gets inside the body by chance

Large companies need a way to reach the savings of the public at large. The same problem, to a certain degree, faces practically every company trying to develop new products and create new jobs. There can be little hope of raising the sort of sums needed from friends and people we know, and while banks may agree to provide short-term finance, they are generally unwilling to provide money on a permanent basis for long-term projects. So companies turn to the public, inviting people to lend their money, or take a share in the business in exchange for a share in future interest. This they do by issuing stocks and shares in the business through the Stock Exchange. By doing so they can put into use the savings of people and institutions, both at home and overseas. When the saver needs his money back, he does not have to go to the company with whom he originally placed it. Instead, he sells his shares through a stock-broker to some other savers who are seeking to invest their money.
Many of the services needed both by industry and by each of us are provided by the government. Without hospitals, roads, electricity, telephones, and railways, this country could not work. All these require continuous spending on new equipment and new development if they are to serve us properly, requiring more money than is raised through taxes alone. The government, and nationalized industries therefore frequently need to borrow money to finance major capital spending, and they, too, come to the Stock Exchange.
There is hardly a man or a woman in this country whose job or whose standard of living does not depend on the ability of his or her employers to raise money to finance new development. In one way or another this new money must come from the saving of the country. The Stock Exchange exists to provide a channel through which these saving can reach those who need finance.

3. When the savers want their money back, they .
