Computers may one day turn night into day---with good old, natural sunlight.
Giant computer-controlled mirrors, thousands of feet across, may one day orbit the Earth, reflected sunlight onto a darkened United States.
Two scientists from NASA say that 16 of these mirrors, each about a half mile wide, could aim their reflected light at one area on Earth that was about 20 miles by 300 miles. That much light would equal about 56 moons.
The mirrors would be so high that they could catch the sun’s light as the sun was shining on the other side of the Earth. The mirrors would orbit---at the same speed as the earth spins. That way, the mirrors would always be over the same spot. The mirrors could be packed into a space shuttle and transported into space in it. Once released a few hundred miles in space, the mirrors, powered by a solar-powered engines, could make the rest of the trip onto space on their own.
The computer-controlled mirrors could also be made to tilt (倾斜) slowly, so the reflected sunlight would sweep slowly along the surface of the Earth. For example, as night fell, the mirrors could be tilted up Boston. Later on, as darkness crept slowly westward, Chicago, for example, then San Francisco could be lit up. The reflected sunlight would allow these cities to save electricity. And in emergencies, such as power-failures of disaster, the mirrors could light up the affected area.
What no one knows yet is what effect this artificial daytime would have on plants, animals and humans. Would it confuse some animals and harm plants that are used to regular day-night cycles Dr. Allen and Dr. Canady recommend that studies be done to find out what bad effects there might be. Can you think of any

That afternoon Molly almost danced along the street, as she walked home with her father from the station. They had seen Mrs. Gibson and Cynthia off to London. She wished her step-mother would take herself off to London much more often.
“Well now, dad” she said, “I’m going to have you all to myself for a whole week. You must be very willing to do it.”
“I hope you aren’t going to boss me, Molly. You’re walking me out of breath already. We mustn’t pass Mrs. Goodmays in our hurry.” They crossed the street to speak to Mrs. Goodmays, one of the doctor’s patients. “We’ve just been seeing my wife and her daughter off to London. They’re gone up for a week.”
“Dear me, to London and only for a week!” said Mrs. Goodmays in surprise. “It seems hardly worth the packing. It’ll be lonely for you, Molly, without your step-sister.”
“Yes,” said Molly, suddenly feeling as if she ought to have taken this view of the ease. “I’ll miss Cynthia.”
“And you, Dr. Gibson, I hope you won’t feel like a widower once again. You must come and have supper with me one evening. What about Tuesday ”
Dr. Gibson felt a sharp blow on his leg from the toe of Molly’s shoe, but even so he accepted the invitation, much to the old lady’s satisfaction.
A moment later Molly said to him. “How could you go and waste one of our precious evenings! We’ve only got five now. I’ve been planning all sorts of things for us to do tonight.”
“What sort of things ”
“Oh, I don’t know. Things you used to like.” She looked at him without fear. “Forbidden things now.”
Her father’s eyes lit up, but his face remained serious. “I’m not going to be pulled down, Molly. With hard work and sensible guidance I’ve reached a very fair height of civilized behavior (文明的行为举止) and there I’m going to stay.”
“Oh no you’re not. We’re having bread and cheese for supper tonight, in armchairs in front of the TV! And you shall wear your dressing-gown at breakfast tomorrow---and every morning for a week! And you shall read the paper at the dining table! That’s only a start. I haven’t finished by a long way yet.”

I can't swim because I have a strong fear of water. Look back at my childhood experience, I think that three reason might explain the fear. The first reason is that I was not allowed to go near the water when I was a child, for my mother had unreasonable fear of it. So, even as a child I was taught see the water as something
danger. Second, my eyes became bad
ones when I was five. If I took off my glasses in the water, I couldn't see anything, but this increased my fear. The worst part of your experience is that as a child of ten I see a neighbor drown. Since then I have been more frightened. 10_______
