Teaching planning of Unit 2 of Book2A
Teaching aims:
1. Knowledge aim: to learn how the journalists work and to learn the social function of news media
2. Moral aim: to learn how to “read” newspaper
Teaching aids:
Multi-media
Procedure:
Task 1 lead-in (talk about the newspaper)
Present new words by discussing about the newspaper “21st century”.(masthead article headline subheading daily weekly column etc.)
In the newspaper what we can find most are articles. Do you know who writes articles (reporters)
Look at two pictures and present the new words (editors journalists interview interviewee interviewer)
Task 2 skimming
Skim the passage and try to find the answers to the following questions:
1. Who do they interview
2. What would they like to find out
3. Do media only tell people what happens
Task 3 careful-reading
Read the passage carefully and answer the questions:
1.What is the editor’s job
2.What does a journalist do before he actually writes his report
3.In what way must he write the report
4.What are some of the reports they write
5.They particularly like some reports. Is it because they are interesting
6.Are the two journalists interested in the same kind of reports What’s the difference

From the passage, we know how a reporter works for a newspaper, how to make news and how to write articles. Do you think to be a reporter is an easy job Do you want to experience the reporter’s work Here is a chance and task for you. Suppose you are a reporter from our school newspaper. You are chosen to interview the Olympic Hurdling Champion Liu Xiang, who won the gold medal in the 110m hurdling in Athens 2004Olympic Games.
The following questions are for students’ reference
For what age did you begin to learn hurdling
What’s your life like during hurdling training
How did you feel when you won the gold medal in Athens Games
Did you have pressure when attending the Athens Games
How did you relieve it (if there was)

Task 6 Discussion
T gets the Ss to enjoy some newspaper articles in which news is reported untruthfully.

(for the circulation of their newspapers, magazines, or start a rumor or gossip to attract and entertain readers, or other certain purposes…)

What attitude should we take towards the news
(to be critical of what we read, make objective and critical comments on news, have our own opinions about news, and have an ability of telling the difference between facts and opinions…)
Summary: We each are social members, we should be concerned about what happens around us. The news media help us to learn about the world around us and have a better understanding of the world on all sides. News and news media are important and necessary for us, and we should show positive attitude towards them. It is important to be a critical reader and make objective and critical comments on what we read.

Written work: write a brief news report about Liu Xiang.
