Reading教案
Teaching aims:
1. To develop the student’ reading abilities.
2. To enable the student to learn about DR ABC and let them know how to deal with some accidents.
3. Help the student to master some important phrases.
Teaching important points:
1. How to give first aid.
2. Have a general understanding of the text.
3. The usage of those expressions.
Teaching difficult points:
1. How to improve the student’ reading abilities.
2. In our daily life, how to deal with some emergency situations.
3. How to grasp and remember the detailed information of the reading material.
4. Enable the student to recite those important phrases.
Types of lesson:
Reading comprehension
Teaching aid:
A recorder, a blackboard, a projector and some slides
Teaching methods:
1. Task-based method.
2. Listening to the tape.
3. Fast reading.
4. Careful reading.
5. Discussion.
Moral infiltration:
1. Encourage the student to help others by using their knowledge about first aid.
2. Stay calm when meeting an emergency.
Teaching procedures:
Step 1. Greetings:
Greet the whole class as usual.
Step 2. Lead-in:
Ask two students to come to the front to act out a scene. When walking, one student is tripped over suddenly and he is badly hurt, bleeding seriously. But the other student is at a loss, frightened to death . He only screams,” oh, my God! Blood, blood .” He does not know how to stop bleeding or how to give first aid.
T: How terrible! What will you do if you meet this situation I think, if we knew sth. about first aid, we could help the injured student.
What’s first aid (show the slide)
As we all know, seconds count in an emergency and knowing what to do can mean the difference between life and death. This class, we are going to learn a passage with the title of DR ABC. After learning it, you’ll know what to do in an emergency. (show the slide)
Step 3. Listening to the passage
Listen to the tape carefully and answer the question: “What do the letters DR ABC refer to ”
Suggested answer:
D------Danger
R------Response
A------Airway
B------Breathing
C------Circulation

Step 4. Skimming:
Skim the text and fill in the blanks.
Fill in the blanks according to the letters DR ABC:
D- We should first of all make sure that the accident scene is no longer dangerous.
R- We can ask him “Are you all right ” in order to calm the person and let him know help is on the way.
A- Make sure that the person’s airway is open and easy to breathe. You can tip the person’s head back slightly.
B- If the person isn’t breathing, try to start it at once, using the mouth-to-mouth method.
C- Check the person’s blood circulation by putting a finger on the person’s neck or wrist to feel the pulse.

Step 5. Structure analysis:
Give the student 2 minutes to find the general idea of each paragraph.
Match the general idea with each paragraph:
Para 1 The meaning of DR ABC.
Para 2 The learning of giving first aid.
Para 3,4 What should we do after giving first aid
Para 5 The importance of giving first aid.
Para 6 The importance of staying calm.

Step 6. Scanning:
Scan the text and finish the following tasks: (show the slide)

Step 7. Post-reading:
Now read the text again to get the answers to finish the exercises on page60.
Ex 1. Use what you have learnt from the text to explain what the people are doing in the pictures. You may work in pairs.
Suggested answer:
Picture1. The man is gently tipping the person’s head back slightly to make sure that the person’s airway is open and it is easy to breathe. The man is checking the person’s pulse by putting a finger on the person’s neck
Picture2. If a person is not breathing, we can use the mouth-to-mouth way to start his/her breathing. And this must be done within five minutes.
Picture3. If a person is bleeding, we should cover the wound with a clean piece of cloth and press on the wound to stop the bleeding.

Ex 2. Work in pairs. Use the letters DR ABC to tell your partner how to give first aid.
Suggested answer:
First, you should make sure that the accident scene is no longer dangerous.
Second, you should try to get a response from the injured person.
Third, you should make sure that the person’s airway is clear.
Fourth, you should check if the person is breathing.
Last, you should make sure that the person’s blood is circulating.

Step 8. Master some important phrases in the text.
Show them on the screen and I’ll read Chinese meanings and the student will read English. Encourage the student to remember them as many as possible.(show the slide)
Step 9. Discussion:
Give a topic to the student and let them have a heated discussion.

Several minutes later, I’ll ask some student to report their results.
Step 10. Summary and homework:
Today, we have learnt some knowledge about DR ABC and first aid. I hope that each of you can use what you have learnt to help, save and care for those people who are in trouble. After class, please try to retell the text and recite those important phrases.
