Teaching Procedures:
Step 1: leading in by story
“Today I’d like to tell you a story. I haven’t seen my father for a few months. Last Sunday when I saw my father, my heart hurt. I found my father became older and need care from his child—me! It’s natural that every one will be old like every father and mother. And it’s natural that we should take care of our parents as they are getting older. If our Mother Earth gets older, what responsibility should we take ”
(“We should take care of her of course.”)
Show some pictures of serious environmental problems facing our Mother Earth ask the Ss some questions.
Desertification starvation deforestationair pollution
1. What’s the biggest problem facing the earth
2. Why is she suffering so much
3. Do you have a best solution for most of us to take action
Step 2:
Today we should know some information about the Earth Summit. Do you anything about it Fill in the blanks according to Para.1.
Time place Held by Theme
1972 In Stockholm,Sweden The United Nations Share ideas about ways to take better care of the earth
2002 In Johannesburg, South Africa The United Nations Sustainable development
1. What does Sustainable Development mean
(We continue developing the world without damaging the environment)
2. Read Para.2 to find out the “big three” talked about by most of the speakers in Johannesburg. And what’s the result of the “big three”
(contaminated drinking water, poor sanitation and air pollution)
(The big three cause more than seven million every year. Twenty percent of the people on earth do not have access to clean drinking water. Air pollution alone cause almost three million deaths.)
3. Read Para.3 What are the problems facing the earth besides the big three
(Poverty, War, Violence)
4. What’s the present problem with the global development
(Richer people get richer while the poor get poorer.)
5. What should people do to solve this problem
(Rich countries have a responsibility towards poor countries and must do whatever they can to help others.)
6. Read Para.4
What’s purpose of the Earth Summit
(It helps people understand that there exist serious problems and that there is still time to take action.)
7. How can we save the earth according to Para4
(Only by changing the way we live can we save earth.)
Here is a quiz to check whether we can do well to our environment.
8. According to Para.5&6
A better understanding of the environment is necessary, but that is not enough, what else is also important
(The willingness to act is very important.)
Questions:
If you care about the environment, please hand up.
If you can do whatever you can to protect the earth, please hand up.
At the same moment, I walked to the front door where every student pass through at the beginning of the class. I picked up a piece of paper and said “willingness to act is important and small things shouldn’t be ignored.”
9. What is the key to solving the major problems according to Para.7 Why
(Education is the key to solving the problems. With better education, people will be able to build a better society in harmony with nature and perhaps put an end to the death and suffering caused by the big three. If the world becomes less unfair and if people can get better education, much of the poverty can be wiped out. If people are better educated, there is good chance that we will see less violence and fewer wars.)
Step 3 further discussion
Talk about this picture. It is very beautiful and inviting, isn’t it
(A)
I can make it a different one, which will be more beautiful. But every one should do something for it—discuss for a moment and say what we can do to help our Mother Earth. If you have good ideas, please share them with us, and I will draw something on this picture.
Several minutes later, this picture is totally different. It is becoming more beautiful and colorful.
(B)
we can know if all of us make small changes, we could make a big difference.
So in this class, we did it.
Step 4 conclusion
Today we learned some information about how to protect the environment and the importance of taking action. When we do something, please pay more attention to whether what we are doing are good to the environment. Remember even small things make a big difference. At last there’s on saying for you, “Water is the source of life, but it is not inexhaustible. If we didn’t take action now, the last drop of water in the world would be man’s tear!
水是生命之源,但它却不是取之不尽,用之不竭的。如果我们现在不采取行动,世界上的最后一滴水将是人类的眼泪。”
