Step 1. Lead in
Today we are going to take up Unit 16 The United states Reading The American South.
First, let’s enjoy some beautiful pictures.
How do these pictures impress you
(quiet, peaceful, prosperous, booming, splendid, attractive)
But can you imagine such a beautiful place was once completely destroyed in the war
Let’s find out how these changes happened.
Step 2. Brief reading
Please open your books at Page 43. Listen to the recorder and try to find out how many parts the passage be divided into and what’s the main idea of each part.
Part 1(para.1). The sufferings of the South in the past
Part 2(Para 2-5). Take Atlanta for example to show the reconstruction of the south.
Part 3(Para6).Today’s American south---promising and hopeful.
Step3. Details reading
Now, you are wanted to find out some detailed information from the passage. We will hold a contest to find out which a group can get the most information.
Let’s welcome the famous hostess Zhou Aijuan to host the contest for us.

Now, everybody, let’s take a contest. I’ll show you some questions. If you know the answer, please put up your hands. And if your answer is right, I’ll give your group 10 scores. But if your answer is wrong, I ‘ll take 10 scores off your group. I have given each group 20 scores, At the end we will find out which group can get the highest score. The winner will get a present from Miss wu. So listen carefully. All of the questions are very easy. Are you ready Ok, let’s begin.

The wounds are slow to heal and the scars run deep. Even today, the south is far behind the rest of the United States such as education and economic development.

Atlanta was burnt down and destroyed.
4.What did the people of Atlanta do after the Civil war
They struggled to rebuild the city and create a new South
5.Why did Dr King organize non-violent demonstrations
The injustices in the city led Dr King to organise non-violent demonstrations.
6. And what’s the result of these non-violent demonstration
Segregation eventually disappeared and a new dawn seemed to arrive.

Modern Atlanta is a booming business center and the home of some of the largest and most successful companies in America.

The South is known for its friendly atmosphere.

Step 4. Pictures talking
Here are four pictures. The first group shows the sufferings of American south. Group 2 tells the changes in American civil rights, especially the rights of the black. The third group is about Atlanta Olympic Games. The fourth group will show you the great changes in economy. Now watch carefully and decide which group of pictures you will talk about.
Now I will give you some time to get prepared.
Step 5. Discussion
Now we know great changes have taken place in American south. What do you think are the possible factors of these changes
Among these factors, which do you think is the most important one
I think dream is the most most important one.Dream is the motivation of human progress and many important inventions. Human beings once dreamed of flying in the sky like a bird. After experiments after experiments, at last the plane was invented. Now we can even go to space in a spaceship. So I think by knowing what your dreams are , I can predict what future will be like.
Step 6. Conclusion
