Unit 1 How often do you exercise?
Period 1 (Section A 1a—2c)
Good morning, everybody.Today I will talk about how to teach Go for it BookⅡ Unit 1 Period 1(Section A 1a—2c).I will explain from the following five parts:teaching material analysis, teaching targets, teaching focus and difficulties, teaching preparation and teaching procedures.
Ⅰ.Teaching material analysis
In this unit, Ss learn to talk about how often they do things. This unit is based on their free time activities and the present tense. It is the first period of this unit, many phrases in BookⅠwill be revised. And the teaching contents are about two parts: free time activities and adverbs of frequency. The topic of this period is close to Ss’ daily life. I think they would like to express themselves.
Ⅱ.Teaching targets
1. Knowledge target
a. To learn the new words and expressions: how often, exercise, skateboard, hardly ever, once, twice, surf the Internet, etc. .
b. To revise the simple past tense and the learned present tense.
c. To master the new structures of the present tense:
What do you usually do on weekends
I usually … .
What does he/she do on weekends
He/She sometimes … .
How often do you …
I often … once a week/twice a month/… .
How often does he/she …
He/She often… .
2. Ability target
a. Listening: to train Ss’ ability of listening; to help Ss listen to specific information.
b. Speaking: to make Ss be able to express themselves with the newly learned expressions: What do you do on weekends How often do you exercise etc. .
3. Moral education target
a. To help Ss learn to cooperate with their partners and group members.
b. To communicate with Ss about their lives and to share their feelings.
c. To make Ss gain more self-confidence and achievement from the teacher’s continuous evaluation and encouragement.
Ⅲ.Teaching focus and difficulties
1. To describe their free time activities in English fluently.
2. To master different adverbs of frequency properly: always, usually, often, sometimes, hardly ever, once a week, etc. .
3. To use the present tense to talk about Ss’ free time activities.
Ⅳ. Teaching preparation
1. Search the relative pictures and information from the Internet, like exercise, surf the Internet and go skateboarding, etc. .
2. Make the CAI.
3. Bring a recorder and the relative tape.
Ⅴ. Teaching procedures
Step 1 Greetings
To greet Ss is a good beginning of a lesson, I always believe that. It is like chatting. It can shorten the distance between the teacher and Ss. Then I will ask about their summer vacation. It was Ss’ real life, I’m sure that they would like to talk about themselves and they are also eager to know about their classmates’.
Step 2 Lead-in and preparation
In this step, I ask Ss to recall their last vacation. Then I will let them compare last vacation with this vacation. And they will find some activities in common. That is a preparation for the following free time activities. So it is natural to show the question:
What do you often do in your summer vacation
At the same time, I present the adverbs of frequency as following: always>usually>sometimes>hardly ever>never. And I will also show different signs beside different adverbs of frequency. I want Ss to have a deep impression of different adverbs of frequency at the first sight. Now it’s time for Ss to talk about their own summer vacation, using the frequency. First I ask Ss the question individually, and then I will let others who have the same experience put up their hands and then repeat together. The one who answers individually will feel proud and others who have the same experience will also be much braver and more confident. The purpose of such an arrangement is to make Ss more self-confident and braver, to arouse their attention and to train their ability of listening.
Step 3 Pre-task
In this step, I design a guessing game to present the new words and phrases, like: surf the Internet, exercise, skateboarding, etc. .I will search some pictures of superstars, e.g. Li Yong. First show the picture of Li Yong, ask Ss:
What does Li Yong often do on weekends
Can you guess Guess like that:
e.g. Does he often watch TV
Finally I will show another picture to Ss to present the new phrase. Then I ask Ss to talk about themselves, showing always>usually>often>sometimes>hardly ever>never. In this part, Ss not only learn the new phrases, but also will have more comprehension about different adverbs of frequency.
Step 4 Task 1 Make a survey
After superstars’ guessing game, it is time for Ss to interview each other by asking:
What do you usually do on weekends
A: Do you often exercise on weekends
B: Yes, I often exercise./No. I sometimes exercise.
What about you
A:… .
And I also remind Ss to remember their results. That is pairwork. The purpose of making a survey is to practice Yes/No questions. It is also the consolidation of the usage of different adverbs of frequency.
Step 5 Task 2 Make a report
Because of the above survey, it is not very hard for Ss to make a report about themselves. That is to train Ss’ ability of speaking. If possible, I will let Ss retell others’ report to improve their ability of listening. After class, let Ss write down their own report or their partner’s report. It can also train Ss’ ability of writing.
Step 6 Task 3 Make more survey
about each other
It’s time to make more survey about Ss’ free time activities by asking:
How often do you exercise
Showing a form with different activities. And present once a day, twice a week, three times a month, ect. .First I let Ss do pairwork, and then ask Ss to ask about other’s partner, showing a form below. Sometimes it is a good way of teaching to use a form to present and to drill. Then let Ss ask and answer in pairs and finally make a report about their partner.
Step 7 Task 4 Listening part
Finish the listening exercises in 1c , 2a and 2b. In this step, I will give Ss enough time to listen, maybe twice or more. As we know, to listen to the tape and repeat after the tape can help Ss imitate the correct pronunciation and intonation. And if time permits, I will ask Ss to make a report about 2a.I do it to train Ss’ ability of speaking.
Step 8 Task 4 Right or wrong
Show Ss some statements.
e.g. Jim watches TV every day.
Ask Ss to read first and then judge if they are right or wrong. I design this part to help Ss realize what they should do and what they should not do in their daily life. It can help Ss to have a healthy lifestyle. And it is also the preparation for the second period.
Step 9 Homework
I will ask Ss to interview one of their family member. I want Ss to communicate with their family members and maybe later they will care more about their family. And it can also help Ss find a healthy lifestyle to spend their free time.
That’s all. Thank you.
