The first period

Do some listening and speaking practice
Cultivate love of the hometown and our country.

Teaching Procedure
Step1 Greeting
Greet the whole class.
Step2 lead-in
T:You know ,May Day is coming,where do you want to go
S: Yichang…
T: But do you know how to describe the location of your destination Where is your destination,or favourite place
S: …
T: It‘s a little hard for you now, but today, I will lead you to have a journey, a journey on the map. After that, you’re sure to know how to describe the location. The first period of Unit18 New Zealand -----Places and location (write down the title) . First, Let’ enjoy some pictures.
( show the pictures of the Three Gorges Dam.)
T: What is it Where is it
S: it’s the Three Gorges Dam.
T: Where is it Can you describe its location
S: It is in …
T: Please look at the map on the screen. This is the TGD, and this is Maoping, Zigui. (mention the directions on the map). On this map , we can see the TGD lies to the east of Maoping Town or we can say it lies about 1km to the east of Maoping,or our school. (write down lie to, and south\ north\east\west\ northwest\
southwest\northeast\southeast. )
Step3 Warming up
T:.This is a map of Zigui , maybe you don’t want to stay here on May Day . So now,let’s come to a map of China to, ( Show the map of China .)
T: Can you find our province in it Where is it Can you describe its location in relation to China (ask students to answer together)
S: It lies in the center of China .
T: What about Yunnan
S: It lies in the southwest of China
T: Where is Xinjiang
S: It lies in the northwest of China
T: Fujian
S: It lies in the southeast of China
T: And Liaoning
S: It lies in the northeast of China.
We know how to describe the location. Now let’s go abroad to see our neighboring countries. (Show the map of Asia.) Where is China And where is Mongolia in relation to China (Mongolia, India, Thailand. The Philipines, Korea, Japan,) .
Ss.describe them together.
Step 4 Listening
T: That’s all about our journey. Have you decided which place to go But I want to travel to a beautiful place near Japan. Look the detailed map. Where is Japan and where is the Pacific Ocean Can you describe the relationship between Japan and the Pacific Ocean
S: It lies to the west the Pacific Ocean.
T: OK. good, now we will listen to a passage about my favourite place---- a small island near Japan in the Pacific Ocean. The island is called Dolpin. First, there are some new words for you. ( Dolphin island, Ashton Creek, Mount Ashton, Winfield,Turnpike,
Epsom, the Pacific Ocean ,volcano, mild sea climate )
Now listen to the tape for the first time, and tick the things you hear about the island.
(Ss listen to the tape and then check the answers. )
T: Now listen again and finish part 2 and check the answers.
T: OK. Listen again and draw the things you hear from the tape.
(Ss listen to the tap and draw the things.)
T: Now, what things have you drawn on the map You can discuss in pairs.
S: forest, cities , islands, railway lines, distance.
T: Now, Let’ s draw together. How far is it from north to south .
Where are the islands/forests/capital city/Epson/Turnpike/Ashton Creek How do the people travel between the cities T: Do you want to listen again (If necessary,listen again.)
Step 5 speaking
T: Now, let’s play a game.Guessing Game. You see here is a map of our province----Hubei Province. Work in groups of four to choose one place to describe. Remember not to give away the name of the place!! Let others guess the names. For example,
It lies in the southwest of Hubei, and there are two famous dams in this place. What is it (Yichang)
Step6 summary
Who can describe our hometown (It lies in the south west of Hubei. It’s rich in oranges ,tea, and coal. It is the hometown of Quyuan. )
As we all know, our hometown is very beautiful and famous .Today, we are proud of our hometown; So I wish tomorrow Zigui will be proud of all of you! Let’s work hard together, shall we
