Unit 19 Modern Agriculture Reading
Teaching aims:
1. Knowledge objectives:
(1)Students will get to know the developments of modern agriculture in different times
(2)Students will get to know the problems existing in its development and the tendency of its development
(3)Students will get to know some new words and phrases related to agriculture
2. Ability objectives:
(1)Students will be able to read a passage quickly by finding out the way it is organized (its structure/outline)——Students’ reading ability of scanning and skimming will be improved
(2)Students will be able to use what they learnt in a passage to solve the real life problems——Students will develop their ability of analyzing and imagination
3. Moral objectives:
(1)Students will try their best to cooperate with their classmates and explore the unknown world
(2)Students will try their best to help others with their difficulties
(3)Students’ love for their hometown-Liushi will be aroused, so will their interest in agriculture and English
Teaching procedures:
Step 1. Leading in & pre-reading: (8’)
T: Nice to meet you.
Ss: Nice to meet you too.
T: First allow me to introduce myself. I am Jane, a senior 3 English teacher of Yueqing Middle School. I hope that we can cooperate with each other very well this class. Can we You know as a senior 3 English teacher I am always busy and tired. Being tired will easily cause me old. But as a girl how I wish I could be young and beautiful. What should I do to make myself young and beautiful, especially my skin Can you give me some advice

Ss: The new tomatoes are bigger and healthier. They can grow without danger from diseases. They also take less time to get ripe.

Ss: Cotton, tobacco, green peppers, flowers, watermelon, soybeans, fish and rice.
T: What’s the GM watermelon like

T: How about rice
Ss: Sometimes it is called “golden rice”.
T: Is it really golden
Ss: No, it has more vitamins and can grow in poor soil.
Task: Design 3 GM crops
T: If you can use GM technique to modify peppers, corns and cabbages, what will your products like

Step 3: Task: put what you’ve learnt to use to help 4 farmers to solve real life problems (10’)
T: You are kind-heated. Now four Liushi farmers have some difficulties to deal with. One group chooses one farmer to help them solve the problems which trouble them a lot. Work in groups of 4 and 3-4 sentences are enough..
Farmer 1: I have a big farm in which I grow watermelons. But it is always difficult to store(储藏) so many round watermelons, because they always roll here and there. And I also want to improve(改进) my watermelons.
Farmer 2: I am not rich, but I always work hard. How can I make as much use as my land
Farmer 3: I want to make poor soil better. And I do not care about money so much. Should I use as many fertilisers as possible
Farmer 4: I grow and sell flowers because I like flowers very much, especially sunflowers. My father supports me by giving me a lot of money. I hope I can enjoy beautiful sunflowers all the year.
Analyse the difficulties with the students and underline the important words.
