1. Look at the pictures of the text and make sure the students know something about the story of Going West in the history of the USA.
Background knowledge for reading: The United States of America is a young country. In its early history, it included only 13 states or so lying in the middle-east of today’s USA. The west was taken by the Native Americans then and was undeveloped. About the middle of the 19th century, the government of the US encouraged people to go west to develop its vast continent. So, many people and their families were moved there for different reasons. (Today, we are going to learn one of these stories.)
3. Show the students the map of the USA and make sure them know some geographical
knowledge about the States with the help of the following questions:

▲ Where are the Great Salt Lake and the Salt Lake Desert
▲ Where are the Rocky Mountains
▲ Where is Califorlia

1. Listen to the tape and complete the following tasks(13mins):
