Teaching Aims and Demands
To learn some new words and expressions(make great efforts, is being lost
Starve to death etc.)
To have a general understanding of world hunger,food shortage ,loss of farmland
Teaching procedures
StepⅠ Leading-in (5 mins)
Ask the students to give the lists of food that they know in the world and their favourite food.
Purpose: warming-up activities for interest
StepⅡ Pre-task(5 mins)
Ask the students to talk about the agriculture in China and other countries
Eg, Farming population, farmland, starvation etc.
Purpose: to collect information about the population, farmland and food supply.
StepⅢ While-task
Task1 fast- reading(5mins)
Read the text quickly to get the answers to these questions
(1) Why is the area of farmland in the world getting smaller
(three reasons)
(2)What are some of the ways of increasing food production
(four ways)
Purpose: to train the ability of fast reading and getting information
Task2 Note-making(10mins)
Read the passage again and write notes under these titles.
FACTS
1 First record of agriculture (date/place) 10,000 years ago in Egypt
2 Present world population over 6 billion
3 Farming population 1billion
4 67% of the world’s surface is water
5 11% of the land surface can be used for growing crops
REASONS FOR LOSS OF FARMLAND
1 It is being built on.
2 Wind and rain have removed a lot of the soil ,no more crops can be grown on this land.
3 A lot of irrigated land has become too salty to grow plants.
WAYS OF INCREASING FOOD PRODUCTION
1 Increase the area by irrigation, pumping water from low-lying areas, build dams and water your fields.
2 Develop new types of plants which produce heavier crops
3 Develop new types of plants which can be grown in poor soil even sand
4 Develop new types of plants which are less likely to be attacked by pests and diseases.
Purpose: to get some details of the text
Task3 Reference and listening(5mins)
Listen to the tape and try to make sure which words and phrases do the words printed in bold in the text refer to

Task4 Free-talk and discussion(10mins)
Show some pictures of hungry people in Africa, desert land and tall buildings,ect.Ask the students to discuss with their partners and then give a short speech to tell us their opinion of starvation and what they can do with the problem.
Purpose: to teach the students to love the people of all over the world, protect our earth and treasure grain.
