It is possible to stop most drug addiction in the United States within a very short time. Simply make all drugs available and sell them at cost. Label each drug with a precise description of what effect—good and bad—the drug will have on the taker. This will require heroic honesty.
For the record, I have tried once almost every drug and like none, disapproving the popular theory that taking a single smoke of opium will enslave the mind. Nevertheless many drugs are bad for certain people to take and they should be told why in a sensible way.
Along with advice and warning, it might be good for our citizens to recall that the United States was the creation men who believed that each man has the right to do what he wants with his own life as long as he does not interfere with his neighbor’s pursuit (追求) of happiness.
Now one can hear the warning, if everyone is allowed to take drugs, everyone will, and the gross national product will decrease and we shall end up a race of fools. Alarming thought. Yet it seems most likely that any reasonably healthy-minded person will become a drug addict if he knows in advance what addiction is going to be like.
Is everyone reasonably sensible? No. Some people will always become drug addicts just as some people will always become drunken, and it is just too bad. Every man, however, has the power to kill himself if he chooses. But since most men don’t, they won’t be the majority, either. Nevertheless, forbidding people things they like or think they might enjoy only makes them want those things all the more. This psychological insight is, for some mysterious reason, denied by government.
61. The writer’s solution to the drug problem is to ________.
A. make all the drugs extremely costly
B. put warnings on all drug labels
C. make the buying and selling of all drugs illegal
D. tell people the dangerous effects of drugs
62. Many people believe that ___________.
A. taking drugs once in a while will not be harmful
B. a single smoke of opium will make you an addict to it
C. the authorities are honest in dealing with the drug problem
D. it is a heroic activity to destroy all the drugs available
63. According to the writer, forbidding people to take drugs is _________.
A. unacceptable to the majority of people
B. not an effective way to stop drug addiction
C. in the interest of the people and the government
D. in agreement with the basic rights of citizens
64. Which of the following can be inferred from the passage?
A. Few people will take drugs if they are allowed.
B. The United States will be easily defeated if its citizens are allowed to take drugs.
C. It is a general practice to forbid drugs in different countries.
D. A majority of people will become addict to drugs if they are allowed to take them.
65. Which of the following might the best describe the writer’s arguments in the passage?
A. Alarming. B. Unusual. C. Mysterious. D. Traditional.
C
It is by no means dead, but for the first time, a new survey has shown that traditional marriage has ended to be the preferred living arrangement in the majority of US households. The findings indicated that marriage did not figure in nearly 55.8 million American family households, or 50.2 percent. More than 14 million of them were headed by single women, another five million by single men, while 36.7 million belonged to a category described as “non-family households”. By comparison, the number of traditional households with married couples at their core stood at slightly more than 55.2 million, or 49.8 percent of the total. Unmarried couples were attracted toward big cities such as New York, Chicago, Los Angeles and San Francisco, while the farm states in the Great Plains and rural communities of the Midwest and West remained bastions (堡垒) of traditionalism, according to the survey. The shift, experts said, also raises the question about the future effectiveness of so-called “family value” policy currently played by both Republicans and Democrats. Douglas Besharov, a sociologist with the American Enterprise Institute, said it is difficult for the traditional family to remain unchanged after three and a half decades of divorce rates reaching 50 percent and five decades out-of-wedlock (婚外) births. “Change is in the air,” Besharov said in a recent interview. “The only question is whether it is a disaster or just an evolution.” He predicted that cohabitation (同居) and temporary relationships between people were likely to dominate America’s social landscape for years to come. “Overall, what I see is a situation in which people—especially children—will be much more isolated, because not only will their parents both be working, but they’ll have fewer siblings, fewer cousins, fewer aunts and uncles,” the scholar argued. “So over time, we’re moving towards a much more individualistic society.”
66. According to the passage, when did the divorce rates of American reach 50 percent?
A. At present. B. 35 years ago.
C. 50 years ago. D. In the past.
67.The passage states that unmarried couples currently live in the following places except ______.
A. New York B. Los Angeles
C. San Francisco D. the Great Plains
68. The author’s attitude towards unmarried households period in US is ______.
A. objective B. subjective
C. agreeable D. appreciative
69. What does“siblings”in last paragraph probably?mean?
A. sisters or brothers B. parents
C. relatives D. children
70. What is the passage mainly about?
A. Non-family household. B. Traditional household.
C. Marriage situation. D. Marriage trend.

One way for a foreign doctor to become an American doctor is to complete a medical residency, a period of hospital training for medical school graduates, in the United States.
To be accepted, foreign-trained doctors need approval from the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates. The process involves passing several tests. After that, foreign doctors can receive a visa to stay in the United States, at least for the training period.
___________________________. The first thing to do is to make sure they attended a recognized medical school, one listed in the International Medical Education Directory.
If not, they cannot be approved for a residency. One solution is to go back to medical school — an American medical school.
One hundred twenty-five schools in the United States belong to the Association of American Medical Colleges. More than one thousand one hundred foreign citizens applied for the current school year, of whom one-fourth were admitted last fall.
Almost all medical schools in the United States require applicants to report scores from the Medical College Admission Test.
Future doctors in the United States traditionally complete four years of medical school after undergraduate school. Then, as residents, they treat patients under the supervision of experienced doctors. A residency is generally between three and seven years, the first of which is called an internship.

One possible version:
In recent years some university graduates tend to choose jobs that have nothing or almost nothing to do with what they have learned, and this has caused different opinions from their parents, friends or relatives.
Most parents are against it. They think a university graduate should choose a job that is closely related to what they have learned, and this is the right way of life. Only very few of the parents or relatives believe that everyone has the freedom to choose what he or she really likes.
In my opinion, it’s right for these students to choose whatever they want to do. As the proverb goes, all roads lead to Rome. And many successful people have shown that success often lies in what most people have ignored or even hated. So, if you are confident that you can be capable of doing something, just do it. M:No,I don’t think you will. You can be cutting off the tops of the dead flowers, they make the garden look so untidy. And all those flowers by the wall you can pull up by the roots. We want the ground to be quite clear before the winter.
W:Are you going to water those new fruit trees?
M:No. I won’t do that. Because I think it will rain tomorrow. But I am going to cut the grass.
W:I will cut it if you like.
M:No,you just clear the flowerbeds and then we will see.
W:I say, how dark those clouds are getting! I think it is going to rain.
M:Then we shall have to put off our gardening until this afternoon.

M:A 51-year-old American lady is called “Farmer Environmentalist” by people in her state. For years, she has been trying to protect the environment. She was born in a farmer’s family in Washington State and began selling batteries in 1992. Today, she is here to talk about her battery battle. Welcome to our program,Mrs. Downing. First of all, could you please tell us what gave you the idea to collect used batteries to protect the environment?
W:Yes. One day in 1993, my son told me that used batteries could greatly harm the environment. He asked me not to throw used batteries away.
M:I know you spent $10,000 in setting up a factory to recycle used batteries in 1999.
W:Yes. In 2002, I also invested in a website www.greenearth.org to help more people to understand the importance of environmental protection. That was last year.
M:And you were honored with the Greenest Award by the Green Foundation last April for that. This May, you won another award from the Ford Foundation for your efforts in environmental protection.
W:Yes, that’s right.

W:Hi,Mark, haven’t seen you for ages. How are you doing?
M:Can’t complain. I’m busy with my experiments in the lab but after work I often do some sports.
W:Like what?
M:Like tennis, running and golf.
W:Golf? That’s my favorite game. How often do you play it, Mark?
M:I usually play about once a month. What about you, Hinges?
W:I play every Sunday.
M:Even when it rains?
W:Yes, even when it rains. I never miss a game on Sunday.
M:Where do you go?
W:The country club. Do you know it?
M:Yes. I was there once. You’re going to play next Sunday, I suppose.
W:Certainly, listen! Why don’t you come with me? We can play.
M:I’d love to. What time shall we meet?
W:Let’s meet at the clubhouse at l:30 in the afternoon.
M:Good. See you then.

Good evening! Thank you for coming to this meeting. I want to tell you about the Music Club. This is a new club for students who like music. Anyone is welcome to join. Here are some forms for you to fill. Please hand them in after the meeting.
The Music Club will meet every day after class. It will meet in the library.
On Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays we will listen to CDs that other club members bring to the meetings. There will be many different kinds of music. Club members will talk about the people who have written and performed the music. On Tuesdays and Thursdays club members will perform their own music. Many students here can sing or play musical instruments. The Music Club will give them a chance to perform in front of other students.
The Music Club will have a committee. At the next meeting we will choose the members of this committee. This committee will decide the program for the club—what CDs we will play and who will perform.
