Most people go to a doctor in their own town or suburb (郊区). But people in the Australian outback can’t get to a doctor quickly. The nearest doctor is sometimes hundreds of kilometers away so they have to call him on a two-way radio. This special doctor is called the “flying doctor”. He visits sick people by plane.
When someone is very sick, the doctor has to fly to the person’s home. His plane lands on a flat piece of ground near the person’s house. Sometimes the doctor has to take the patient to hospital. Flying doctors take about 8,600 people to hospital each year.
However, most of the time the person isn’t very sick, and the doctor doesn’t have to visit. He can give advice on the radio from the office at the flying doctor center. He can tell the patient to use some medicine from a special medicine chest (箱子). There is one of these chests in every home in the outback. Each bottle, tube (管子) and packet (包) in the chest has a number. The doctor often says something like this, “take two tablets (药片) from bottle 5 every four hours.”

As late as 1800, women’s only place was in the home. The idea of woman in the business world was unthinkable. Men were certain that no woman could do a good job outside her home. This was such a widely accepted idea that when the well-known Bronte sisters began writing books in 1864, they had to sign their books with men’s names instead.
Teaching was the first profession (职业) open to women soon after 1800. But even that was not an easy profession for women to enter because most schools and colleges were open only to men. Oberlin College in Ohio was the first college in America to accept women.
Hospital nursing became respectable (值得尊敬的) work for women only after Nightingale became famous. Seeing that she was not only a nurse but also a rich and well-educated woman, people began to believe it was possible for women to nurse the sick and still be “ladies”. Miss Nightingale opened England’s first training school for nurse in 1860.
The invention of the typewriter(打字机) in 1867 helped to bring women out of the home and into the business world. One morning, when we had been riding on our bikes for five hours, we came to a bridge where the railway crossed a pond(池塘). For 30 feet there was nothing but the widely-spaced wooden sleepers(枕木) under our wheels, and nothing to stop us falling into the steaming pond below if we lost our balance. Right under the bridge lay the body of a dead cow. I watched Mat as he came near to the bridge and rode straight over, without ever, slowing down. I stopped.
“What’s up?” he cried out from the other side.
“I’m not riding over that thing. If I slip, I’ll be in there with that cow,” “There’s nothing to it. I just did it. didn’t I?”
“You’re stronger and taller. My feet don’t touch the ground. You do it for me!”
Mat said strength didn’t come into it and rode off. I knew he would give me at least an hour before coming to help. The sun burned my face, sweat ran off my forehead into my eyes and stuck my blouse(女衬衫) to my body. Try myself rather than wait for Mat to help. I rode back to get a good run-up and over I went.
