Each day water-related diseases kill 3,900 of the world’s children
Across the world. 11 billion people have no access to clean drinking water. More than 2.6 billion people lack basic sanitation(卫生设备)。
The combination proves deadly. Each year, diseases related to inadequate water and sanitation kill between 2 and 5 million people and cause an estimated 80 percent of all sicknesses in the developing world. Safe drinking water is a precondition for health and the fight against child death rate, inequality between men and women and poverty.
Consider these facts:
The average distance that women in Africa and Asia walk to collect water is 6 kilometers.
Only 58 percent of children in sub-Saharan Africa are drinking safe water, and only 37 percent of children in South Asia have access to even a basic toilet.
Each year in India alone, 7.3 million working days are lost to water-borne diseases.
Here are three ways you can help:
1)Write Congress
Current U.S. foreign aid for drinking water and sanitation budgets only one dollar per year per American citizen. Few members of Congress have ever received a letter from voters about clean drinking water abroad.
2) Sponsor a project with a faith-based organization
Many U.S. religious groups already sponsor water and sanitation projects, working with partner organizations abroad. Simply put a single project by a U.S. organization can make safe water a reality for thousands of people.
3) Support nonprofit water organizations
Numerous U.S. based nonprofits work skillfully abroad in community-led projects related to drinking water and sanitation. Like the sample of non-profits noted as follows, some organizations are large, others small-scale, some operate worldwide, others are devoted to certain areas in Africa, Asia, or Latin American. Support them generously.
1. The three facts presented in the passage are used to illustrate that ______.
A. poverty can result in water-borne diseases
B. people have no access to clean drinking water.
C. women’s rights are denied in some developing countries.
D. safe drinking water should be a primary concern.
2. The intended readers of the passage are ______.
A. Americans B. overseas sponsors
C. Congressmen D. U.S. based water organizations
3. The main purpose of the passage is to call on people to ______.
A. get rid of water-related diseases in developing countries.
B. donate money to people short of water through religious groups
C. fight against the worldwide water shortage and sanitation problem
D. take joint action in support of some nonprofit water organizations
4.. What information will probably be provided following the last paragraph?
A. A variety of companies and their worldwide operation.
B. A list of nonprofit water organizations to make contact with.
C. Some ways to get financial aids from U.S. Congress.
D. A few water resources exploited by some world-famous organization

Children who spend more time reading with their parents have a greater chance of becoming better readers that those who don’t. With help from their parents, children can learn techniques to improve their reading skills.
“A lot of parents think after their child learns to read, they should stop reading to them,” Donna George said. “They are sadly mistaken.”
George offers her services to parents at the Title I Learning Centers. She said reading aloud to children may be the most valuable thing parents can do. “It is better for children to hear things at a higher level than where they are,” George said. “Parents are their child’s first teacher.” Parents help their children build listening, phonics, comprehension and vocabulary skills when they can read aloud to them.
Before parents can identify reading problems, they should escape the enemy-television and limit the time their children spend watching television. George suggested not allowing kids to have a TV in their bedrooms, setting a schedule of when kids can watch or keeping a list of how many programs children watch. Louise Joines said while her 14-year-old daughter and 10-year-old daughter and 10-year-old son enjoy reading, the television sometimes becomes a distraction. So she tries to build the situation by suggesting books the entire family will enjoy reading together, like the Harry Potter series.
Parents who do not read themselves should not count on their children being enthusiastic about it. If parents would read to their children at least 15minutes every day, children would not have so many problems in school. It is the parents’ job to help build that desire in their children, and of course to know what kind of books to read is also important.
1. According to George, reading aloud to children____________.
help them correct mistakes.
is helpful to their reading
is parents’ first duty to their children
can get children out of television’s attraction
2. The underlined word(in paragraph 4) means something that __________.
can improve children’s reading
can help children’s right way of reading
can make children interested in reading
can make children not attentive
3. What does the fourth paragraph mainly want to show is important?
A. reading skills B. reading speed C. feeding materials D. reading environment
4. If the passage is not completed, which of the following can follow the fifth paragraph?
Parents choose reading materials for their children.
Advice is given to control their children.
What TV programs children can watch during reading.
How children improve their reading by themselves

People who have lost the ability to understand or use words due to brain damage are called aphasics(失语症患者). Such patients can be extremely good at something else. From the changing expressions on speakers’ faces and the tones of their voices, they can tell lies from truths.
Doctors studying the human brain have given a number of examples of this amazing power of aphasics. Some have even compared this power to that of a dog with an ability to find out the drugs hidden in the baggage.
Recently, scientists carried out tests to see if all that was said about aphasics was true. They studied a mixed group of people. Some were normal; others were aphasics. It was proved that the aphasics were far ahead of the normal people in recognizing false speeches — in most cases, the normal people were fooled by words, but the aphasics were not.
Some years ago, Dr. Oliver Sacks wrote in his book about his experiences with aphasics. He mentioned a particular case in a hospital. Some aphasics were watching the president giving a speech on TV. Since the president had been an actor earlier, making a good speech was no problem for him. He was trying to put his feelings into every word of his speech.
But his way of speaking had the opposite effect on the patients. They didn’t seem to believe him. Instead, they burst into laughter. The aphasics knew that the president did not mean a word of what he was saying. He was lying!
Many doctors see aphasics as people who are not completely normal because they lack the ability to understand words. However, according to Dr. Sacks, they are more gifted than normal people. Normal people may get carried away by words. Aphasics seem to understand human expressions better, though they cannot understand words.
5. What is so surprising about aphasics?
A. They can fool other people. B. They can find out the hidden drugs.
C. They can understand language better. D. They can tell whether people are lying.
6. How did the scientists study aphasics?
A. By asking them to watch TV together. B. By organizing them into acting groups.
C. By comparing them with normal people. D. By giving them chances to speak on TV.
7. What do we learn from this text?
A. What ones says reflects how one feels.
B. Aphasics have richer feelings than others.
C. Normal people often tell lies in their speeches.
D. People poor at one thing can be good at another.

While drunken driving may be on the decline, traffic safety experts remain puzzled over how to deal with another alcohol related danger : drunken pedestrians.
Pedestrians struck and killed by cars often are extremely drunk. In fact, they are drunk more frequently and with higher blood alcohol levels than drunken drivers who are killed in accidents various studies have shown. Forty percent of adult pedestrians involved in fatal crashes have a blood alcohol level of at least 0.10, which by law in most states shows drunk compared to only 25 percent of drivers in deadly accidents, according to recent federal data.
Some types of pedestrian accidents have been declining nationally, especially those involving children, but the number of adult pedestrians who are drunk when killed in traffic has remained relatively steady at 2500 a year. The total number of pedestrians killed annually in U.S. traffic accidents is at least 7000, or one of every seven highway accidents resulting in death.
“We are dealing here, we think , with a very severe drinking problem that leads to a severe highway safety problem, ” said Richard Bloomberg, president of Dunlap and Associates Inc, in Norwalk, Coon.
Bloomberg, whose consulting company found a very high rate of alcohol involvement in a controlled study of pedestrian accidents in New Orleans, was among several researchers who spoke on the topic at the annual meeting of the Research council’s Transportation Research Board (TRB) in Washington in January.
Pedestrians accidents have not received enough attention in the past, according to Kay Culprits, who chairs the board’s committee on pedestrians. Few methods exist to monitor walking habits, she said, and researchers have been puzzled about how to prevent disasters.
8. Among the causes of walkers’ accidents, the most serious problem is________.
A. long delays in traffic signals that may make people cross streets without paying attention to traffic rules.
B. alcohol.
C. a lack of adult keeping eyes on many children involved in accidents.
D. former drunken drivers whose licenses are not allowed to use for a time.
9. According to recent federal data, drunken drivers with an over 0.10 blood alcohol level in deadly accidents_______.
A. make up one seventh of highway accidents.
B. are 2500 a year.
C. are at least 7000 in US traffic accidents..
D. are 15 percent less than drunken adult walkers with the same level.
10. According to the passage, what is Bloomberg?
A. A researcher.
B. A specialist in traffic safety.
C. A clerk of a consulting company.
D. A government official.

The house was quiet at 5 a.m. and Tim’s mother was asleep. Only the sound of the freezer broke the quiet. He’d dreamt the cave last night. The purring of the freezer had been the sea.
Tim pulled on a sweater and put some apples into his schoolbag. It was too early for breakfast. He’d eat after he’d been through the cave, sitting on the rocks and staring at the sea.
He wished he had a proper pack. His schoolbag would have to do. What else? Sandwiches—but his mother might wake up if he started pulling out bread for sandwiches, she’d want to know why he had to go out early. He settled for some biscuits and left a note stuck to the table, saying ‘Gone to Michael’s. Back tonight, Tim.”
The sky was soft and light outside, though the sun still wasn’t up. Even the highway up the hill was quiet as he made his way down the street. The wind from the sea was fresh and sweet.
The sand hills still breathed heat from yesterday’s sun, though the top of the sand was cool. He ran down to the beach impatiently, but there was no one, just dry sand dancing in the early wind and seabirds marching up and down watching the waves.
The light changed suddenly. The first rays of sunlight stretched across the sea. The sun was pushing its way over the edge of the world.
Over the first rocks, along to the point, Tim glanced back. The beach was still empty. The sun sailed higher in the sky.
He could see the cave now, even darker in the morning light. The sand turned silver then dark gold as the water flowed away from it. He had to force himself to go closer. Why was it so much more mysterious now? But it would be silly to go back now after so much trouble. He needn’t go in all the way…
11. What did Tim do at the beginning of the story?
A. He left home quietly.
B. He had breakfast at home.
C. He left a note on the freezer.
D. He put a sweater in his schoolbag.
12. “He settled for some biscuits” ( in Paragraph 3) means that Tim______.
A. had to leave the biscuits on the table
B. liked biscuits better than sandwiches
C. took some biscuits at last
D. could only find some biscuits in the kitchen.
13. What made it possible for Tim to see the entry to the cave?
A. The height of the first rocks.
B. The ups and downs of the waves.
C. The change in the position of the sun.
D. The vast stretch of the sunlit beach.
14. Which of the following statements is true according to the story ?
A. The sea looked like a piece of gold.
B. Seabirds flew away when Tim arrived.
C. Tim was the only person on the beach.
D. The sky got dark as Tim reached the cave.
15. In the story, Tim’s felt_________.
A. lonely first and then crazy.
B. anxious first and then excited.
C. helpless first and happy at last.
D. eager first and nervous at last.

Witches Upset by Broomstick Style骑扫把的正确方法
Hollywood studio Warner Bros* has had a spell cast on it for showing apprentice wizard Harry Potter riding his broomstick with the brush part at the back. Kevin Carlyon, a high priest of British White Witches, said broomsticks should be ridden the other way round, and has wished for the film to do badly at the box office until the studio admits it got it wrong. Warner Bros claims the film is an accurate portrayal of things that happen in witchcraft, yet woodcuts from the 16th and 17th centuries show broomsticks being ridden with the brush part in the front,* said Carlyon, It's a common mistake -even the sixties TV series Bewitched* showed broomsticks being ridden backwards, but this is not correct,* he said. Carlyon knows first hand the proper way to ride a broomstick -he said he had three, though all were grounded at the moment. 他说:"CAA(英国民航管理局)不会允许我(骑扫把)飞行。”

What makes a house a home?
Not size, of course. I've been in some of the grandest houses in America, and it's readily apparent no one lives there. Earlier this year, I had dinner in a mud hut in Ethiopia, where we sat on chairs next to the hostess's bed -- a home that had more warmth than any house I've been in since.
Now John Edwards is exploring what makes a house a home in his just-released Home: he Blueprints of Our Lives. There Edwards writes, “ This is a book about homes, the values they rest on, the dreams they are filled with, and the people they have shaped. The houses and circumstances are different, but much of what you find inside will be familiar.”
Whether you’re sitting in an airport right now, waiting to fly to your childhood home for Thanksgiving, or in your own home waiting for the relatives to arrive, you know what he's talking about.
We’ve lived in our townhouse for 21 years. The loose windows that make noise in the wind. The fireplace so shallow it holds only one log. The kitchen window that offers a view of the world passing by. It’s where friends sit on the kitchen counter drinking wine while dinner is being fixed. I lived there for only 18, but it will always be my true home. Even the lamp in the west living room window, which I could see far down the road when driving home late at night, still shines.
While all this talk about childhood memories can be warm and comforting, home is whom
you’re with, not where you are. As Edwards writes, “Home is family. Home is safety. Home is
faith.”
Happy homecoming.

Once upon a time there was a wise man that used to go to the sea to do his writing. He had a habit of walking on the beach before he began his work. One day he was walking along the shore. As he looked down at the beach, he saw a human figure moving like a dancer. He smiled to himself at the thought that someone would dance on the beach. So he began to walk faster to catch up. As he got closer, he saw that it was a young man and the young man wasn’t dancing, but instead he was reaching down to the shore, picking up something and throwing it into the ocean. The young man paused, looked up and replied, “Throwing starfishes (海星) in the ocean.”
“I guess I should have asked, why are you rowing starfishes in the ocean?”
“The sun is up and the tide is going out. And if I don’t throw them in, they’ll die”
“But, young man, don’t you realize that there are miles and miles of beach and starfishes all along it. You can’t possibly make a difference!”
The young man listened politely. Football is different from most careers. There are no advertisements, applications forms or interviews. The employers, the football clubs, find players and offer them employment. The clubs look for young players with particular qualities and, most importantly, talent. The players should be very, very good and play for a leading club, they must be outstanding. Besides, they should have good team spirit, a strong character, mental strength and a positive attitude.
Many countries have set up programs to encourage and develop young footballers, and this is where the clubs go to assess and find stars of the future. China has special football schools where children acquire ball skills as well as a formal education. In the UK, the clubs send scouts (球探) to discover talented boys and girls. They take part in training sessions, and play in the junior team. Some of them, if good enough, may become a paid member of staff at the age of 16. During this time, they receive football instruction and play for the youth team, but it is not an easy life. After two years, only a few trainees are good enough to go on to the next stage. They are offered a contract (合同) with a club and their salary depends on t heir performance and how many matches their team wins. Perhaps, like David Beckham, one or two become great stars. However, football is a fiercely competitive job, so many players are not successful and have to leave the profession to find other careers.
Little David was football crazy. He spent all his spare time kicking a ball. He dreamed of being a footballer and scoring goals in front of thousands of cheering fans. David’s dream comes true. Now he is famous for haircuts and lifestyle as well as for scoring goals. David Beckham’s story has a happy ending, but most of the children who have the same wish will never have the opportunity to play for a team. Dreams of the young, though they have done their best, do not always come true.
67. What can we infer from the first paragraph?
A. Footballers are all talents.
B. Football clubs are all strict.
C. Football employers know little about ads.
D. Football career has its own characters.
Why have many countries set up programs to develop young footballers?
A. One right start is more important to footballers.
B. The young players can receive a formal education in this way.
C. The football employers can find talented players in this way.
D. Paid posts can be offered to the young players in this way.
Why do many young players have to leave football game to find other careers?
A. Because only a few are allowed to become stars.
B. Because only a few can win the final.
C. Because they can not stand the hard life.
D. Because they are not offered any contracts with the clubs.
What’s the purpose of the last paragraph?
A. The writer takes David as an example to make a conclusion.
B. The writer takes David as an example to support his statements mentioned above.
C. The writer proves David is really an excellent football talent.
D. The writer warns young people against taking football as their careers.

“Wow, you got an A without even studying.”
“Your drawing is wonderful –you’re my little Picasso.”
If you’re like most parents, you offer praise to your children, believing it is the key to their success. (No. 1) But according to a new study, praise may do more harm than good.
For the study, after a simple IQ test, one group was told it did really well and must be very smart. The other group was told it did really well and must have worked hard. One group was praised for intelligence and the other was praised _______________.
Asked if they wanted to take a slightly harder test, the kids praised for their intelligence were unwillingly. Of those praised for their effort, however, 90 percent were eager for a more challenging task. And on a final test the effort group performed significantly better than the group praised for its intelligence.
Many of the kids who had been labeled “smart” performed worst of all. The “hard workers” got the message that they could improve their scores by trying harder, but the “smart” kids believed they should do well without any effort. (No.2) Thus, kids who get too much praise are less likely to take risks, are highly sensitive to failure and are more likely to give up when faced with a challenge.
Tips for Parents:
Avoid labels. (No.3) Praising for effort sends the message that your child has the power to improve and change. Be mindful of labeling yourself and others.
Teach kids from an early age that the brain is a muscle that can be strengthened with practice. This sends the message that kids can directly affect their intelligence.
Parents often praise their kids to make themselves feel good, or to protect their kids from failure. But it’s very important for parents to help their kids to learn to deal with setbacks (挫折) and to help them focus on ways to improve.
1. Please fill in the blank in the fourth paragraph with proper words or phrases to complete the sentence.
One group was praised for intelligence and the other was praised _____________________.
2. Which sentence (No. 1, No. 2 or No. 3) in the passage can be replaced by the following one?
As a result of much praise, kids will lack enough courage to risk and face failure and a challenge.

Life is What We Make It
生活靠我们自己创造
Are you dissatisfied with today’s success? It is the harvest from yesterday’s sowing. Do you dream of a golden morrow? You will reap what you are sowing today. We get out of life just what we put into it.
Nature takes on our moods: she laughs with those who laugh and weeps with those who weep. If we rejoice and are glad, the very birds sing more sweetly, the woods and streams murmur our song. But if we are sad and sorrowful, a sudden gloom falls upon Nature’s face; the sun shines, but not in our hearts; the birds sing, but not to us.
The future will be just what we make it. Our purpose will give it its character. One’s resolution is one’s prophecy. Leave all your discouraging pessimism behind. Do not prophesy evil, but good. Men of hope come to be front.

In the United States today, a large group of people want a college education However, everyone is not able to attend a four—year college, Many four—year colleges are already too crowded. To give more people a chance to get a college education, some cities and towns have built junior colleges.

A linguist, an expert on languages, is always listening , never off-duty. I invited a group of friends found to my house, telling them that I was going to record their speech, I said I was interested in their regional accents, and that it would take only a few minutes. Thus, one evening, three people came of my house and were shown into my front room. In front of each chair there was a microphone at head height, connected to a recorder in the middle of the floor. They sat down, rather nervously, and I explained that all I wanted was for them to count from one to twenty. Then we could relax and have a drink.
I turned on the recorder and each turn counted from one to twenty in their best accents. When it was over, I turned the recorder off and brought round the drinks. The rest of the evening was spent in total relaxation. I joined them in talking and joking freely.
leaving them only for a telephone call which lasted some time.
Or at least that is how would appear. For, of course, the microphones were not connected to the recorder in the middle of the room at all but to another one in the bedroom. My friends, having seen the recorder before them turned off, paid no more attention to the microphones, a few inches from their mouths, thus giving excellent sound quality. It meant that I was able to get as natural a piece of talk as it would be possible to find.
I should add perhaps, that I did tell my friends what had happened to them, after the recording was over, and asked them whether it should be destroyed. None of them wanted to—but for some. Linguistic research can be a very expensive business.
77.The writer asked his friends to count from one to twenty because he _________.

Your mobile phone rings, and instead of the usual electronic signals, it’s playing your favourite music. A friend sends your favourite song to cheer your up. One day, a record company might forward new records and videos to your phone.
The mobile business is getting into the music business. For the moment, the interest is in pleasant ring tones, but some companies are hoping to take full advantage of the next generation of mobile phones—all-purpose gadgets(小玩意儿)that blend phone, personal stereo, video player and Internet browser into one.
Finally, record companies might send new records and videos to fans who register (注册) their cell phone numbers.
The fans could pass music or songs along to friends—a kind of musical trading card. Unlike Internet tracks, mobile downloads would be easy for record companies to control, said former record industry official Ralph Simon, who is now chairman of Yourmobile, based in Santa Monic, California.
“If you pass a song along to other phones through a network, each phone can be charged,”said Simon. “It’s like going through a toll gate (收费站). There’s more possibility for copyright control than there is on the Internet”
Massachustts-based Converse is offering a service in Portugal and the Netherlands that lets people record tunes on their voice mail or send music as presents to friends. Finally, people might be able to sing karaoke and pass them along. The company is sure that people will want to use music to reach out and touch someone.
“A mobile phone is not a listening machine, and you’ll be disappointed if you think you can change it to a radio, ” said Ohad Ouziel, a creative manager for converse in Israel. “But if someone sends you a song while you’re on vacation, you appreciate the feeling.”

A Traffic Accident
Last Sunday, an old lady aged about seventy was badly hurt in a traffic accident at the second crossing of Xinhua Road. It was 9:30 p.m. and there were many cars in the street at that time. The old lady was crossing the street when a young man riding a bicycle rushed up and knocked her down.
The accident happened so suddenly that it had been some time before the other people in the street understood what was happening. The old lady was badly hurt and couldn’t move at all. Someone called the First Aid Center and soon some doctors came in their ambulance and carried the lady to the hospital. The police said that it was the young man’s fault because he didn’t see the red light turning on.
In my opinion, it is up to all of us road users to make sure that we avoid accidents by paying attention to road safety.

Hello, everyone. It’s nice to speak about what we can do for our school, and I think each of us
can do something.
The first thing we can do is to make our campus more beautiful. Every one of us may plant a
tree in the school, or organize a thorough cleaning on the campus. We can also form a good habit
of putting the rubbish in the trashcan.
The second thing we can do is to protect the facilities in our school. When we leave the
classroom, we should never forget to turn off the light or close the door. We should not leave the
tap water running or waste any materials in the laboratory class.
If everyone does one thing for our school, I believe we will turn our school into a better place to
Study and live in.
