3. Teach the students to learn how to congratulate on others’
birthday and response properly to others’ congratulations
Teaching steps:
Step 1 Greeting
1. Greet the class. Teacher introduces himself first. Ask some classroom English: What’s your name What class are you in How old are you etc.
2. Teacher shows some pictures of Xinqiao Middle School. T: Is it a nice school Welcome to Xinqiao Middle School. Help them to response properly.
Step2 Numbers in English
1. Get the students to count English numbers 1-10 quickly. See who can do the
best. Ask some questions: What’s one and one What’s two an two What’s four and four What’s eight and eight etc…
2. Get the class to count numbers 1-20. Try to spell these numbers correctly.
This may be useful for the successful process of the teaching steps below.
Step 3 Presentation
1. Teacher shows a picture of himself. Get the students to guess his age using
the question “Is he …… ”. Explain that “He is six.” we can also say “He is six years old.” Get the students to guess the age of the teacher now.
2. Teacher shows his ID number on the screen. Help them to find out the year,
the month and the day in the ID number. Teach “ year”, “month”, “day” and “birthday”.
3. Teacher shows a picture of a baby. T: She is four months old. Pay attention to
the use and pronunciation of the phrase “months old”. Show another picture of a baby and get them to guess how old he is using “Is he …… months old ”.
Step 4 Presentation
1. Teacher shows two pictures of dogs. They have different names. Explain that
we can put their names together. T: Its name is A. It’s name is B. →Their names are A and B.
2. Show more pictures. Do in the same way. T: His name is A. Her name is B.
→Their names are and B. My name is C. His name is D. Our names are C and D.
3. Explain we can put some pronouns into one. For example: It is A. It is B. →
They ’re A and B. Practise the use of pronouns “we” and “you” (plural) using some more pictures.
Step 5 Days of the week
Teacher shows a calendar of this month. This is a week. Teach the seven days of the week. Get the students to find out the correct order of the seven days in a week. Explain when we don’t know the day, we can ask “What day is today ”. Pay attention to the preposition “on”.
Step 6 Months
Teacher shows twelve typical pictures of each month. Teach the twelve months of the year. T: When we don’t know the month, we can ask: What month is it Help them to answer: It’s ……But explain that when we ask about the birthday, we should use “in”. T: When is your birthday. It’s in January.
Step 7 Practice
1. Get the students to read through the questions and answers of Ex 1. Practise in pairs and match the answers with the questions. Check the answers with the whole class.
2. Do Ex 2 in pairs and fill in the blankets with correct words. Check the answers. Explain the contraction is just one word.
Step 8 Homework
Get the students to make a survey about the month of the birthday of his classmates and fill the chart.
