Teaching aims and demands:
1. Language knowledge
a. names of sports
b. new words and expressions
c. intonation of wh-questions and sentences expressing surprise
d. the use of conjunctions(and, but, so, or)
2. Abilities focus:
a. fast-reading for main idea
b. guessing the meanings of new words from the context
c. describing a person(appearance,age,weight,hobbies,etc.)
3. Comunication function:
a. writing letters
c. getting information by asking wh-questions
Main and difficult points:
1. Ss should be able to describe a person in details.
2. Ss are expected to write a letter to introduce themselves.
3. Ss are expected to improve their reading and speaking ablities.
Teaching aids: PPT
Periods needed: 5
Teaching procedures:
Period 1-2(Reading)
Step1 Warming-up and lead-in
1. Free talk: Do you like sports Which is your favourite sport (Slide 2)
2. A competition of the names of sports. (eg. boxing, table-tennis, rugby, hockey, badminton, etc) (Slide 3—15)
3. Complete Part A, Reading (Slide 17)
Step2 A letter from a pen-friend
1. Go over the form of a letter.
a. Complete B1.
b. the position of each part of a letter (Slide 18)
2. Lead Ss to finish B2 and tell them that is an efficient way of getting the main idea of a letter or even a passage. (Slide 19)
3. Introduce some related knowledge by showing pictures. (Slide 20--23)
4. Read for details
Ask Ss to read the letter quickly to do the exercise in Part D. (Slide 24)
5. Guessing word meanings from the context.
a. Explain the instructions in Part C.
b. Ss work in pairs to finish C1 & C2.
6. Read the letter again for more details and complete Part E1.
7. Ss try to find information to complete the sentences in E2 and try to join each pair of sentences with because or so. (Slide 27--29)
Period 3 (Listening , Language & Speaking)
Step1 Listen to the recording and complete a table of information.
1. Play the tape once for Ss to do the listening ex.
2. Check the answers with Ss and play the difficult part again for them.
3. Play the tape for a third time.
Step2 Language & Speaking
1. Go over the wh-questions by asking and answering questions about Sidney. Complete A1. (Slide 30)
2. Pair work. Show pictures of Yao Ming and Liu Xiang. Ss are encouraged to ask and answer questions about their information. Lead Ss to pay attention to intonation! (Slide 31--34)
3. Complete the left exx in Language.
Period 4 (words & phrases)
Step1 New words
1. Go through the new words in the chapter. (Slide 35)
Step2 Language points
1. Ask Ss to find out the language points by translating the Chinese phrases.(Slide 36--38)
2. Explain the language points and make examples.
Step3 Practice (Slide 39--45)
Period 5 (Writing)
Step1 Follow the steps in PartA, Writing. Ask individual student to write down some phrases or sentences on the Bb.
Step2 Writing a letter
1. Show the model to Ss. (Slide 46)
2. Ss work alone to write a letter.
3. Ask Ss to read aloud their letters.
