Unit 2 Colour
Vocabulary & Grammar (I)
Teaching procedures
Step 1 Revision
Exchange greetings with the students.
Have a revision of what they have learned in Reading by asking a few questions.
Step 2 Presentation
Show the students a few important words they might use when they answer the questions.
e.g. Blue: calm; Orange: contented; Green: energetic; Red: strong.
Ask them to find another word for each of them with similar meanings.
e.g. calm – relaxed; contented – satisfied; energetic – lively; strong – powerful.
Tell the students that such pairs of words are called “synonyms”.
Step 3 Learning
Play Game 1 in Part A on Page 26 to learn synonyms of different words.
Play Game 2 with a synonym wheel. Ask the students to write down their synonyms.
Step 4 Presentation and practice
Ask the students which game they like better. Introduce the following sentence structure: ‘prefer … to …’.
e.g. I prefer Game 2 to Game 1.
Make sentences with this sentence structure according to a few pictures.
Describe a few other pictures with a different structure: ‘would rather … than …’.
Finish the exercise on Page 27 in the Students’ Book.
Help the students work out the grammar rules.
Step 5 Group work
Ask the students to make groups of 4. Work together to design an ideal room. They are asked to use the two sentence structures while discussing.
Ask a few of them to design the room on the computer in front of the whole class.
Homework
Design your own bedroom and write a few sentences using ‘prefer … to …’ and ‘would rather … than …’.
Finish the additional exercise in the worksheet.
