Unit 18 New Zealand
The First Period
Teaching Aims:
1. Learn to describe location and direction.
2. Do some listening practice.
3. Improve the students’ speaking ability by talking.
Teaching Important Points:
1. Train the students listening ability.
2. Master the expressions describing location and direction.
Teaching Difficult Points:
1. How to make improve the students’ listening ability
2. How to finish the task of speaking.
Teaching Methods:
1. Listening-and-choice activity to help the students go through with the listening material.
2. Individual, pair or group work to make every student work in class.
Teaching Aids:
a tape recorder a map of China a computer
Teaching Procedures:
Step1. Greetings
Greet the whole class as usual.
Step2 warming Up
Ask Ss to look at the map of China. And give them two sentences:1. The East China Sea lies to the east of Zhejiang Province. 2. Hainan Island lies to the south of Guangdong Province.
Write the sentence pattern on the Bb, then ask them to do some practice.
(A lies/is to the south/north/east/west of B.)
Step 4 Listening
1. Teacher plays the tape for the students to listen. After listening, the students are given two minutes checking their answers with their partners
2.Play the tape again, and ask Ss to do part 2. Mention them to go through each question before they do
Step 5 Speaking
Ts can begin this part with the questions below:
1. where were you born
2. where is it
3. how about grandfather
Then lead them to read the example on the book. Ask Ss to make a dialogue.
List the useful expressions on the Bb.

How to help the students understand the text better.

1. Fast reading to find out the general idea of the text.

3. Individual or pair work to make every student work in class.

Teaching Procedures:
Step1. Greeting and Revision
Greet the whole class as usual.
Ask Ss to describe the location of China.
Step2. Pre-reading
(Put up a map of the world.) Answer the questions below:
1. write down the names of five islands and describe where they are.
2. what are the names of their capital cities In which part of the islands are their capital cities
Step3. Reading
Ask Ss to look at map of New Zealand, try to point out the location of it.
1. Ask them to read the passage saliently and quickly, get the general idea, and then do the exercise on the screen.( after a while, check the answers. )

Teaching Difficult Points:
1. Help the students master the following sentence structure: It is/ was+n./adj.+infinitive/clause.
2. How to use “it’ correctly.
Teaching Methods:
1. Discussion method to help the students combine some sentences and form a passage.
2. Individual method to help the students master the use of “it”.
3. Pair work or individual work to make every student work in calss.
