There are some stock markets in large cities in many countries. Stock markets in Paris, London, Tokyo, Shanghai and New York are among the largest and most well-known. Hopes for China to send its astronauts into space are now stronger than ever.
Following the successful launch of the country’s third unmanned spacecraft into orbit last week, Chinese astronauts could be sent into outer space in the near future.
The spacecraft, called “Shenzhou Ⅲ”, was launched on March 25. Its journey began at the Jiuquan Launch Center in Gansu Province. The spacecraft was boosted by the “Long March ⅡF” carrier rocket into a pre-set orbit.
Space experts say that Shenzhou Ⅲ is technically suitable for astronauts. Its dummy astronauts(模拟宇航员)are equipped with a system to test the human body’s responses to conditions in outer space. Technicians on the ground can control the dummies to monitor what a real astronaut’s heartbeat, pulse, breathing and eating would be while in orbit.
During the test launch, space scientists tested the escape system for the first time, which could save the lives of astronauts. During the spacecraft’s outer space travel, experiments in areas such as life science and space physics are also planned.
After separating from the re-entry module(返回舱),the orbital module will continue circling the earth for several months. Shenzhou’s flight is being tracked and controlled by the Xi’an Satellite Monitoring Center and four monitoring vessels(测量船). They have been deployed(部署) in the Atlantic, Pacific and Indian Oceans. The spacecraft is expected to circle the earth once every 90 minutes. It will fly in space for a couple of days before landing.
President Jiang Zemin, who was present at the launch, said it showed the Chinese people’s spirit of constantly striving to become stronger.
China has set up a spacecraft application system, a modern space launch site, a spacecraft monitoring and controlling network and a spacecraft landing system, as well as a group of astronauts. China’s first unmanned spacecraft took off successfully in November 1999. And the second was launched in January 2001.

This is a rather strange story but it is quite true. In December 1996, a burglar broke into a golf club in a small town. When the police arrived to investigate, they found an unusual clue (线索)—a piece of cheese with a bite-mark in it. The burglar had gone into the kitchen, and had eaten some food there. Then he had stolen some cigarettes and a little money.
The policeman in charge of the case guessed that the burglar was a local man. He thought that professional thieves would not bother to break into a golf club. They would know there was not much worth stealing in such a place. He made enquiries in the town and asked three suspects to come to the police station. When he questioned them about the burglary, they all denied stealing in the club. The policeman then gave each man a piece of cheese and asked him to bite it. He took the pieces of the cheese to a dentist and asked him to compare the bite-marks with that in the piece of cheese found at the golf club. Then the dentist said the bite-mark made by one of the suspects was the same as that in the piece of cheese at the scene of the burglary.
The policeman set free two of the suspects and questioned the third one. At first the man claimed that he was innocent. The policeman knew that the man was lying, so he encouraged him to talk until he began to contradict himself. Then the policeman told him about the bite-marks and the man had to admit his stealing.

Gene technology to benefit people
Among all the fast growing science and technology, the research of human genes, or biological engineering as people call it, is drawing more and more attention now. Sometimes it is a hot topic discussed by people.
The greatest thing that gene technology can do is to cure serious diseases that doctors at present can almost do nothing with, such as cancer and heart disease. Every year, millions of people are murdered by these two killers. And to date, doctors have not found an effective way to cure them. But if the gene technology is applied, not only these two diseases can be cured completely, bringing happiness and more living days to the patients, but also the great amount of money people spend on curing their diseases can be saved, therefore it benefits the economy as well. In addition, human life span(寿命) can be prolonged.
Gene technology can help people to give birth to more healthy and clever children. Some families, with the English imperial family being a good example, have hereditary diseases. This means their children will for sure have the family disease, which is a great trouble for these families. In the past, doctors could do nothing about hereditary diseases. But gene technology can solve this problem perfectly. The scientists just need to find the wrong gene and correct it, and a healthy child will be born.
Some people are worrying that the gene research can be used to manufacture human beings in large quantities. In the past few years, scientists have succeeded in cloning a sheep, therefore these people predict that human babies would soon be cloned. But I believe cloned babies will not come out in large quantities, for most couples in the world can have babies in very normal way. Of course, the governments must take care to control gene technology.
67. What does "these two killers" in the second paragraph refer to
A. Gene technology and another treatment of the two diseases.
B. The two murderers who killed the cloned baby.
C. The two diseases of cancer and heart disease.
D. Hereditary diseases and cancer.
68. What's the main idea of the third paragraph
A. How gene technology can be applied in the field of treating hereditary diseases.
B. Gene technology can be used to clone human babies.
C. Gene technology can help people to give birth of a baby.
D. Gene technology can help the English imperial family out.
69. In what way gene technology can help to treat hereditary diseases
A. Using gene technology, people with hereditary diseases can have more living
days.
B. Using gene technology, scientist finds the wrong gene and corrects it.
C. Using gene technology, human babies can be cloned.
D. Doctors can cure cancer and heart disease with the help of gene technology.
70. What is the main purpose of writing this passage
A. Expressing the writer's idea that gene technology will benefit people.
B. Telling people the advantages of gene technology.
C. Telling the readers that gene technology will not benefit people.
D. Explaining that gene technology will also do harm to the humanity.
71. According to the passage, the underlined word probably means ______.
A. make use of B. destroy C. produce D. kill
E
Have you ever been in a meeting while someone was making a speech and realized suddenly that your mind was a million miles away You probably felt sorry and made up your mind to pay attention and never have daydreaming again. Most of us from earlier school days have been told that daydreaming is a waste of time.
“On the contrary,” says L. Giambra, an expert in psychology(心理学), “daydreaming is quite necessary. Without it, the mind couldn’t get done all the thinking it has to do during a normal day…You can’t possibly do all your thinking with a conscious mind. Instead, your unconscious mind is working out problems all the time. Daydreaming then may be one way that the unconscious states of minds have silent dialogues.”
Early experts in psychology paid no attention to the importance of daydreams or even considered them harmful. At one time daydreaming was thought to be a cause of some mental illness. They did not have a better understanding of daydreams until the late 1980s. Eric Klinger, a professor of psychology, is the writer of the book Daydreaming. Klinger says, “We know now that daydreaming is one of the main ways that we organize our lives, learn from our experiences, and plan for our futures… Daydreams really are a window on the things we fear and the things we long for in life.”
Daydreams are usually very simple and direct, quite unlike sleep dreams which may be hard to understand. It’s easier to gain a deep understanding of your life by paying close attention to your daydreams than by trying to examine your sleep dreams carefully. Daydreams help you recognize the difficult situations in your life and find out a possible way of handling them.
Daydreams cannot be predicted; they move off in unexpected directions which may be creative and full of useful ideas. For many famous artists and scientists, daydreams were and are a main source of creative energy.
So the next time you catch yourself daydreaming, don’t stop. Just pay attention to your dream. It may be more important than you think.
72. In what way are daydreams different from sleep dreams
A. Daydreams help to develop an unconscious mind.
B. Daydreams are not so easy for us to control and direct.
C. Daydreams help us to handle more difficult situations.
D. Daydreams are easier for us to understand.
73. Professor Eric Klinger believes that ______.
A. our fears and longings in life are shown in our daydreams
B. we may study our experiences just through our daydreams
C. daydreaming is one of the important ways that we recognize our lives
D. we should be able to tell our futures by having daydreams
74. The writer of the article thinks that ______.
A. daydreaming is more helpful than sleep dreams
B. many artists and scientists are famous because they have daydreams
C. professor Eric Klinger has a better idea than L. Giambra
D. daydreaming with an unconscious mind will do good to health
75. Which of the following is NOT TRUE according to the passage
A. Daydreaming was once regarded as a cause of mental illness.
B. Experts began to have a better understanding of daydreams in the late 1980s.
C. Scientists believe that we can know daydreams before having them.
D. Many well-known artists gained energy of creation from daydreams.
