??? 公元前10世纪,庞贝只是一个小集镇,
主要从事农业和渔业生产。
后来,它演变成一座繁华的城市,
约有2万居民。它面积约1.8平方公里,
环绕有4800多米长的石砌城墙,
两条笔直平坦的大街将全城分成9个城区,
里面小街小巷纵横相连,路面用碎石铺成。
大街两旁有人行道,街宽达10米,
铺着整块的大石板;十字路口雕花石砌的水池里满是清凉
的泉水。最宏伟的建筑物集中在 城西南,
这儿是政治、经济、宗教的中心。
庞贝人奔放的个性和整座城市欢愉的风情,
至今仍令2000多年后的人们倾倒。
庞贝是世界上最美丽繁华的城市之一,
生活在其中的人民拥有坚固的战车和民主
的政治,内无忧外无患,乐享天伦。
然而,庞贝的劫数是天定的。
公元79年8月的一天中午,烈日当空,
闷热异常。连日小地震的维苏威火山憋
不住了,一块奇形怪状的云彩从山顶升起,
如同一棵平顶巨松分出了无数旁枝,
向天际蔓延,遮住了阳光。一声巨响,
震耳欲聋,火山口揭盖,岩浆喷高几千米,
蒸气云腾空万米,将天地遮蔽得漆黑一团,
闪电似的火焰偶尔照亮了大地,火山灰、
浮石、碎岩如倾盆大雨飞泻而下。火山爆发30分钟之后,一层轻浮的灰粉
覆盖了庞贝城,炽热的硫磺气体使人难以
忍受。4小时后,覆盖物够重的了,
房屋顶盖纷纷坍塌。火山爆发18个小时后,
火山碎屑将整个庞贝城掩埋,最深处竟达
19米,曾被誉为美丽花园的庞贝消失了。
在这个过程中,大部分人有时间逃命,
至今在遗址只发掘到2000多具尸骨。后来,考古学家将石膏浆灌进已经干枯
了的尸体空壳,制成许多和真人一样
形状的石膏像,再现了受难者当时绝望
和痛苦的表情,令观光者无不唏嘘叹息。
维苏威火山海拔1280多米。公元79年,
古罗马帝国最繁荣的城市庞贝就坐落在
这座火山的南面。流向那不勒斯湾的
萨尔诺河绕庞贝而过,连接起古罗马帝国
与世界各地的贸易往来,令商贾之影与
交易之音终日浮动于庞贝城中。
这里土壤肥沃,气候宜人,物产丰饶,
在成排的葡萄架和油橄榄间,庞贝人栽种
着谷物、蔬菜,还有无花果和迷迭香。直到灾难发生的那一刻,庞贝人都不知道,
他们脚下的沃土其实是不远处那座火山的
馈赠。庞贝人还不知道,这座已经聚集了
几百年力量的火山一旦爆发,他们所拥有
的一切将在瞬间被摧毁得面目全非—
庞贝的灭顶之灾真的来临了……
1707年,有人打井时掘出了三尊衣饰华丽
的女性雕像,但只将其当作海湾沿岸古代
遗址中的文物。1748年,又有人掘出了被
火山灰包裹着的人体遗骸,这才想起了
那座被掩埋中的古城。
1750年,一群意大利农民挖水渠时发现了
金币,接着又掘出刻有“庞贝”字样的石头,
沉睡了1600多年的古城开始苏醒了,
大批考古学家和寻宝者闻风而至。
突发的灭顶之灾使庞贝的生命倏然终止,
它在被毁灭的那一刻也同时被永远地凝固了。
庞贝因此得以成为我们今天还能领略到的
最伟大的古代文明遗址,这处遗址的最动
人心魄之处在于:它真实地保留着灾难来
临前庞贝人的样子——竞技场能容纳两万
观众,这说明庞贝人会在一个时刻倾城而出;
30家面包烘房,100多家酒吧,3座公共浴场,
用于交易的步行街,可容纳5000人的剧院;而在街道边的小酒馆里,
墙上画的酒神浑身挂满葡萄,
每一颗果实都饱满得仿佛就要胀破。
羊毛作坊、商店、印染店、客栈的墙壁上,
到处都留有庞贝人纵情情感的印记:
“啊,杰斯,愿你的脓包再次裂开,
比上次疼得还要厉害。”
浴室壁画古城内大部分的街道都很窄,只有7至14
英尺,即便是最宽一条街也不过20英尺左右。
所有路的路面都用维苏威多边形的熔岩石
铺就,而且城内的道路还包括公路和人行道。
城内的农牧神庙被认为是最美丽的私家建筑,
其规模,装潢和建筑意义都是首屈一指的。
此神庙内的亚历山大大帝和大流士之战的
壁画被认为是绝妙的镶嵌工艺作品,
现收藏于那不勒斯国家博物馆内。
农牧神庙观看角斗是庞贝人一种残酷的爱好,
已有专职的角斗士出现,他们是最令人
羡慕的人。城东南角的圆形露天剧场也
兼作角斗场,有灌水和防泄系统。
四周层环的观众席,分下、中、高席,
分属不同的社会阶层,可容纳5000人。
中心低处为舞台,可进行海战表演。
它建于公元前70年,比罗马圆形剧场
还早40年。
庞贝人对神极为崇拜,也不排斥外来的神,
他们认为赫克力士是庞贝的创造者,
维纳斯则是庞贝的守护者。他们也热爱艺术,
戏剧、绘画、雕刻都是他们所钟爱的。
浴场也是庞贝城的一大景观,而且都集中
在市中心,遍布的浴场满足了人们日益
高涨的享乐欲望。
