The Opening Speech

My dear students, ladies and gentlemen, good afternoon!
It gives me great pleasure to be here with you today to open the 14th “Ying Cai Cup” English Speech Contest!
So far, the speech contest has been organized 14 times since 1992. With the care and support of so many teachers and students in our school, the contest has grown from a small tree to a big one. So first of all, I’d like to take this opportunity to express my sincere thanks to all of our English teachers, thank you for your efforts. My thanks also go to the contestants, thank your for your exciting performance, and to all of you, our English learners and lovers. Thank you all!
Boys and girls, about ten years ago, when I was at college, I myself majored in English. You may wonder why I chose to learn English.
To get a high mark in the exam ---- No!
To get a good job after graduation ---- No!
To communicate easily with foreigners ---- No!
To take more information from the outside world ---- No!
All these reasons are not my final purpose of learning English. My dream is just to let the world know more about us, about China. During classes, our foreign teachers inform us of their culture as well as their countries. But after class, they are more interested in learning about our hometown, our country, our people and our culture. We are learning about the world and the world is learning about China at the same time. Between China and the world lies a bridge. The bridge is what I am speaking now---English.
Ladies and gentlemen, let’s work hard together to improve our English.
Let’s practise English whenever and wherever possible.
Let’s take advantage of English, the world language, to let the world know more about China.
At last, I hope you will enjoy the following exciting contest and benefit a lot from what you are going to hear today. I wish the speech contest a great success!
