第三部分:阅读理解(共15小题;每小题2分,满分30分)

Most great inventors often met with much trouble in their work. Before they could succeed, they had to overcome thousands of difficulties which were put in their way. The following is one of such examples.
George Stephenson (1781----1848 ), a famous British inventor, made the first train in 1825, using a steam engine. When he was experimenting on the train, he met with troubles from government, the newspapers and the gentlemen in the country. They said that the noise and the smoke would kill cows, horses and sheep , that the engine would burst or that the hot coals from it would set fire to their houses. People believed what they said.
George Stephenson told the people that the train could go on small rails, could pull carriages full of goods and passengers and that there was no great harm to them. It was a very difficult matter for him to make them believe. However, after some time he was able to do it and the first train that was driven by George Stephenson himself proved what he had said. On the train, there was a new steam engine. It was invented by him and was proved a complete success.
The first day when the train ran on the rails, people along the way heard the noise of the train in the distance, and saw it running quickly to them. They thought it was a genie ( 妖怪 ) . They ran quickly home for fear and closed their doors tightly. They did not dare to come out until it had passed. A week later an old woman even said that her hen had been so frightened that it hadn’t laid any eggs for three days.

C. running quickly to it D. proud of the invention
59. People ran quickly back home because they thought _______.

the train would set fire to their houses D. the smoke was too dirty

The Internet has recently not had a great effect on the school performance of China’s youth, according to survey ( 调查 ) published. Nor has it affected the time children spend with their families.
The survey of over 3,000 students aged 10 to 18 in seven major cities was conducted by the Academy of Social Sciences. It showed that 29% of the students find the internet useful for study, while over 40% say it does not affect their work in a bad way.
The Internet does not cause social isolation ( 隔离 ) either. Instead, Internet users are more satisfied with their lives and feel less lonely than non-users. In spite of the survey results, some youth workers still have interests in cyberspace.
“Online gaming means many students are stopped from studying, and some of them lose the chance to go to the school they want to,” said Sun Yunxiao, vice director of the China Youth Research Center.
Pu Wei ,the survey’s director, sees such criticisms ( 批评 ) as narrow-minded. “It’s those who are frustrated ( 使灰心 ) by their studies, criticized by teachers, and lack friends who are likely to become addicts of the web. To others who are happy with life it has little bad effect.”
Pu says students can gain a lot from the web and should be introduced to the concept of “web quality-education”. If they are taught how to use the Internet properly, they are less likely to make wrong use of it. This requires participation by parents, and encouraging the children to use the Internet properly rather than keeping them away from it.
60. What’s the main idea of the passage?
The functions of the Internet.
How to use the Internet.
The influence that the Internet has on children.
The Internet does no harm to kids.
61. In everyday life, people _______.
aren’t willing to play computer games
don’t allow their children to play on computers
worry about the ill effect that the Internet has had
allow their kids to play computer
62. When a person goes surfing the Internet, ________.
he should bury himself in it
he is certain to drop school
he will become lonely
he also needs to arrange time for his study
63. Pu Wei ________.
encourages students to play computers
think it wrong for parents to prevent children playing computers
believes playing computers can benefit students if used properly
questions whether it is suitable to ask students to be away from the Internet

Yao Ming makes NBA closer to China.
“Someday, there will be no Americans left in the NBA.” Said 12-year-old Xing Tao , who joined his school’s team two years ago, after watching Yao in a televised NBA game. “The players will all be Chinese, like Yao!”
To China Yao is a home-grown superstar who helped make the world’s first basketball league closer to Chinese players. To the NBA, the 2.23-metre centre offers an opening of a different sort into the world’s largest new market.
Yao’s NBA first appearance against the Indiana Pacers in October reached 287 million households ( 家庭 ) in China. By contrast ( 对照 ) , there are only about 105 million households in the US. That game might have been a bit of a letdown to Yao’s fans. He played just 11 of the 48 minutes, had two rebounds and got no points.
Compare that with his performance on December 19, also against Indiana, Yao won 29 points and 10 rebounds. “This was one of the most exciting games I’ve had,” Yao said after Houston’s 95-83 victory.
“Yao Ming has brought the NBA closer to the Chinese,” said NBA spokeswoman Cheong Sau Ching, who is based in Hong Kong. “That makes the dream seem achievable for other people in China.”
The 22-year-old Yao is not the country’s first player in the NBA; Wang Zhizhi broke down that wall as a player with the Dallas Mavericks ( 小牛队 ) in April 2001. But Yao’s combination of modesty and his skills make him a favourite back home.
64. What's the direct reason for Xing Tao to join the school’s basketball team?
He watched an NBA game.
He liked basketball.
He hoped to play for Houston Rockets.
He had a dream that he would become a basketball star.
65. What’s the main idea of this passage?
Middle school students want to play basketball
Yao Ming makes NBA closer to China
There’ll be no Americans left in the NBA
There are many new stars from China in the NBA
66. How many points did Yao Ming win in his first game in NBA?
A. Zero. B. 2. C. 29. D. 12.7.
67. What does “letdown” in paragraph 6 mean?
A. failure B. surprise C. disappointment D. sadness
68. Why does Yao Ming win more popularity than Wang Zhizhi at home?
A. He has performed excellently. B. He is modest.
C. His height. D. A & B.

We have a rather small house, with only one spare bedroom. You can imagine our alarm when Aunt Clara wrote to say that she was coming with her family for the weekend. Her family was not a small one, with four boys all under the age of twelve.
I sent a telegram at once, explaining that our house was too small. Aunt Clara called us up the next morning. “I forgot mention you,” she said in her sweetest voice, “the boys will be bringing their tents ( 帐篷 ).”
Even so, my wife was still worried. It was true that we had a large garden, but there was still the problem of feeding our growing boys.
“And what if it rains?” she added.
Luckily Saturday morning turned out to be bright and clear when I went to the station to meet Aunt Clara. I pushed the boys, together with the luggage, into the back of the car, with great difficulty of course. The youngest sat in the front, with Clara and me.
On the way home, I talked over the shoulder to David, the eldest boy, “I didn’t see your tents among your luggage.”
“The tents!” cried David. “My god! We left them at home.”

书面表达
An emergency may happen every day. But if we are careful and follow some safety rules, some can be avoided. Let’s take chemistry lab as an example.
First of all, you should wash your hands before and after the experiment. And you should keep the air in the lab fresh. You’d better put on the gloves when doing the experiment. Be careful with fire and dangerous medicine.
Never taste chemicals or eat anything in the lab. Always remember not to touch anything without teacher’s permission. You shouldn’t run about in the lab.
Only in this way can you keep yourself safe in the lab.
