(8) Lighten Up
These days, it seems that almost all of us are too serious. My older daughter often says to me, “Daddy, you have got that serious (1) again.” Even those who often remind themselves of nonseriousness are probably too serious. People are angry and uptight about virtually everything – being five minutes late, having someone else (2)
five minutes late, being (3) in heavy traffic, witnessing someone look at us wrong pr say the wrong thing., paying bills , waiting in line, overcooking a meal, making an honest mistake – you (4) it, perhaps we are all upset by it.
The root being uptight is our (5) to accept life as being different, in any way, from our (6) . Very simple, we want things to be a certain way but they are not a certain way. Life is simply as it is. Perhaps Benjamin Franklin said it best:” Our (7) views, our hopes and fears become our (8) of life, and when circumstances(情况)don’t (9) our ideas, they become our difficulties.” We spend our lives wanting things, people, and events to be just as we want them to be --- and when they are not, we
fight and we (10) .
The first step in recovering from overseriousness is to (11) that you have a problem. You have to want to change, to become more (12) . You have to see that your own uptightness is largely of your own (13) --- it has something to do with the way you have (14) your life and the way you react to it.
The next step is to understand the link between your expectations and your frustration
(失望) level. Whenever you expect something to be a certain way and it isn’t, you are upset and you suffer. (15) , when you let go of your expectations, when you accept life as it is, you are free. To hold on is to be serious and uptight. To let go is to lighten up.
A good exercise is to try to approach a single day without (16) . Don’t expect people to be friendly. When they are not, you won’t be surprised or (17) . If they are, you’ll be delighted. Don’t expect your day to be problem free, instead, as problems come up, say to yourself, “Ah, another hurdle to (18) .” As you approach your day in this (19) you’ll notice how graceful life can be. (20) fighting against life, you’ll be dancing with it. Pretty soon, with practice, you’ll lighten up your entire life. And when you lighten up, life is a lot more fun.

I heard my voice trembling; tears (14) in the sun, as I thanked him for picking the very best one. “You are welcome,” he smiled, and then ran off to play, unaware of the shock he’d had on my day.
I sat there and (15) how he managed to see, a self-pitying woman under an old willow tree. How did he (16) my self-indulged(自哀自怜) situation Perhaps from his heart, he’s been (17) with true sight.
Through the eyes of a blind child, at last I could see, the problem was not (18) the world; the problem was me. And for all of those (19) I myself had been blind, I made up my mind to see the beauty in life, and (20) every second that’s mine.
