Don’t try telling Mark Bouch that dogs are man’s best friends. His pet Keilar helped land him in prison.
She dropped his package of amphetamine(安非他明) at the feet of police as they began a search of his house.
Bouch, 26, was confident that the two officers would not find the package after he hid it in the bathroom.
But he failed to make allowances for dogs’ natural instincts and now he is starting a nine-month prison sentence .
Michelle Lockhart, 20, Mark’s girlfriend at the time, said yesterday, “I put the dogs into the bathroom to get them out of the way. The next thing I knew, Keilar had a package in her mouth. Mark had hidden it in the bathroom and it was just on the floor in there.”
“I couldn’t believe it when the dog came out and put it right in front of the policemen. It was just following its instinct to pick things up . The police looked as surprised as I was and Keilar just looked really pleased with herself . She really gave the game away. I haven’t spoken to Mark since it happened.”
The police had arrived at the couple’s home in Wigton, Cumbria, after a warning. They were puzzled to see one of their suspect’s pets run out from behind a chair with a package in her jaws.
It is believed Keilar had found the drugs in the bathroom before moving quickly down behind the furniture and then presenting the officers with her find. Detective ConstableJames Little, who was in charge of the case, said, “Somebody had a bag of amphetamine and when the police arrived, it disappeared rather rapidly . The dog, following its natural instinct, went and picked it up in its mouth and brought it back.”
Bouch, who has 82 previous convictions (被判有罪) mostly for dishonesty, had denied possessing amphetamine with intent to supply but was convicted at Carlisle Crown Court.
His pets are being cared for by relatives while he is in prison.
Lockhart has been sentenced to 240 hours’ community service for the same charge.
The judge said she escaped because of her immaturity(未成年) and lack of previous convictions.

The SOS Phone
To tell you the truth, I am not interested in owning a cellular(网络) phone, except for use in an Emergency, for ordinary cellular phone service is very expensive. How would I get help if I were in trouble or in danger? A good friend told me about a product she bought that would settle my problem. It’s the SOS phone—a cellular phone service designed for emergency use.
With the touch of a button, the SOS phone will connect me to a roadside emergency service, a 911 service or trained SOS operator, 24 hours a day. If I ever need help, I know it’s just a phone call away.
By pressing the “Two ”button, I will be connected with my emergency roadside provider. Or, if I don’t have one, the SOS operator can suggest one to me and get in touch with them at once.
The “911”button will connect me to a 911 emergency service in my area—best of all, the call is completely free!
If I just want to call home to tell my husband and children something necessary, I can. By pressing the “call” button, I will reach an operator. When I ask the operator to call home, I will be connected automatically(自动地). And because the Call Center has my 10 most-used phone numbers, I don’t even have to remember the number.
Unlike ordinary cellular phones, the SOS phone doesn’t have any lowest usage requirements or other promises that could change the price I expect to pay each month.
60. The writer enjoys using the SOS phone because .
she is always in trouble or in danger
she thinks the cost of its service is reasonable
she needn’t pay for any emergency service
the ordinary cellular phone cannot be used in an emergency
61. When you have the SOS phone, .
you will get help whenever you are in an emergency
you will be safe wherever you are
you can be connected with anyone
you can get service from any cellular phone
62. When you want to call home, .
you will have to tell the operator your home phone number
the operator will suggest one phone number to you
the Call Center will pass on your words to your family
you will be connected with your family with the help of the operator
63. What does the writer mainly want to tell us in this passage? .
To tell us her experience in a company.
To let us know she has bought a SOS phone.
To tell us something about the SOS phone.
To tell us that she is in safety now.
C
Singapore Young people in Singapore are in no hurry to get married, and most graduate women would prefer to remain single if they cannot find a suitable life partner, a survey (调查) has found.
For graduates, aged 21 to 30, marriage is the fourth most important goal in the next five years after a career, healthy bank balance and a house, said the survey published on Monday by the “Strait Times”.
And non-graduates, put marriage fifth in their list of priorities (优先考虑的东西), adding education to the same three goals.
The survey, which looked at the lifestyle patterns of singles and their attitudes to marriage, was conducted by the Social Department Unit (SDU) which was set up in 1984 an official matchmaking (做媒) service to promote family life.
It surveyed 815 undergraduates and 1,000 working adults, including 204 graduates and 796 non-graduates in the island of 3 million people.
The survey found, however, that even if they did not put wedding plans at the top of their priorities, the majority of young Singaporeans would like to get married.
But more single women than men would remain single, rather than lower their expectations for a partner or rely on professional matchmakers, if they could not find their perfect match on their own, the survey found.
SDU director Susan Chan said, some women were unwilling to meet new people, preferring to focus on their career and stay with a circle of close friends.
“If they give themselves a chance before they become too old, they will meet enough men to judge whether their expectations are just fanciful (理想化的) ideas.” Chan told the “Strait Times”.
The SDU was formed with the concern over the birth rates going down and worries that a growing number of single, graduate women were unable to find mates because Singaporean men didn’t want brides (新娘) with higher educational qualifications.

Did you ever think someone was scary because they looked different or ate strange food? Well, they might think the same about you! One of the things we all need to do is to celebrate variety. We shouldn’t think badly of people from other cultures because they are different from our own.
Sometimes we judge people from other countries unfairly, because one person from that culture did something bad. Well, has your class ever been punished just because a few kids were causing trouble? Has your whole family ever been blamed for something your little sister did? It doesn’t seem fair, does it? It's just as unfair to blame a whole culture for what two or three people do.
So here are some things that you can do to help yourself understand other cultures:
1. Find common ground! Remember that even though some people look different on the outside, it doesn’t change what they look on the inside. They still have the same feelings!
2. Don't blame everyone because of one! So let’s say someone from another culture is mean and you decide to avoid everyone from that culture. Well, think about it. Why are you blaming them for something they didn’t have anything to do with? Put yourself in their shoes. How would you feel? Trying to understand how a person thinks can be a very good way to understand why they are acting that way. Remember, other people may not think the same way.
3. Try to make friends with people from other cultures. You could ask them what they know about their culture, or what it is like in their country. Try foods from that culture, or ask them if they know any words in that language. You might be surprised at how pure other cultures can be! You can have great discussions and have lots of fun doing new things.
4. Know how people always judge other people. If you know what you are thinking then you can help make things easier. Pay attention to what you think about other people, it helps!
68. What is mainly discussed in this passage?
A. Why there are differences between people.
B. What to do to understand other cultures.
C. How people feel when they meet people from other cultures.
D. Where differences between people lie.
69. In the author's opinion, one mistake about how we treat cultural differences is that we _______.
A. cannot see and share what people have in common
B. believe that other people may certainly think badly of us
C. don’t want to learn anything valuable in other cultures
D. try to find the reason for the differences
70. The underlined word “celebrate” here most probably means “_____________”.
A. to feel proud of B. to express ideas to
C. to praise and enjoy D. to pay attention to
71. By saying “… then you can help make things easier.”, the author means you will __________.
A. make more friends B. know more about the world
C. have more fun in life D. find fewer differences between you and others
