Is there anything more important than health? I don’t think so. “Health is the greatest wealth,” wise people say. You can’t be good at your studies or work well when you are ill.
If you have a headache, toothache, backache, earache or bad pain in the stomach, if you complain of a bad cough, if you run a high temperature and have a bad cold, or if you suffer from high or low blood pressure, I think you should go to the doctor.
The doctor will examine your throat, feel your pulse(脉搏), test your blood pressure, take your temperature, sound your heart and lungs, test your eyes, check your teeth or have your chest X-rayed. After that he will advise some treatment, or some medicine. The only thing you have to do is to follow his advice.
Speaking about doctor’s advice, I can’t help telling you a funny story.
An old gentleman came to see the doctor. The man was very ill. He told the doctor about his weakness, memory loss and serious problems with his heart and lungs. The doctor examined him and said there was no medicine for his disease.
He told his patient to go to a quiet place for a month and have a good rest. He also advised him to eat a lot of meat, drink two glasses of red wine every day and take long walks. In other words, the doctor advised him to follow the rule: “Eat at pleasure, drink with measure and enjoy life as it is.” The doctor also said that if the man wanted to be well again, he shouldn’t smoke more than one cigarette a day.
A month later the gentleman came into the doctor’s office. He looked cheerful and happy. He thanked the doctor and said that he had never felt a healthier man.
“But you know, doctor,” he said, “it’s not easy to begin smoking at my age.”
58. The writer thinks that _____.
A. health is more important than wealth
B. work is as important as studies
C. medicine is more important than pleasure
D. nothing is more important than money
59. What advice did the doctor NOT give the old man?
A. Take long walks.
B. Smoke more than one cigarette a day.
C. Eat a lot of meat.
D. Drink two glasses of red wine every day.
60. The underlined part “he had never felt a healthier man” means “______”.
A. he was feeling better than ever
B. he wasn’t a healthy man
C. he was feeling worse than before
D. he will be well again
61. From the last sentence of the passage, we can learn ______.
A. the man was a heavy smoker before seeing the doctor
B. the man didn’t smoke so much before seeing the doctor
C. the man didn’t smoke before seeing the doctor
D. the man began to learn to smoke before seeing the doctor

I'm beginning to think whether my grandmother isn't right when she complains, as she frequently does, that children nowadays aren't as well-behaved as they used to be. She recounts in detail how she used to be told to respect her elders and betters. She was taught to speak only when she was spoken to, and when she went out on her own, she was reminded to say please and thank you. Children in her days, she continues, were expected to be seen and not heard, but these days you are lucky if you ever hear parents telling their children to mind their manners.
If you give her the chance she then takes out of her writing desk the old photograph album which she keeps there, and which she never tires of displaying. Of course when you look at pictures of her parents you feel sure that, with a father as strict looking as that, you too would have been “seen and not heard” . Beside him sits his wife, with their children around her; Granny and her elder brothers. It always occurs to me that perhaps those long, stiff, black clothes were so heavy to a little girl that she hadn't enough breath left to be talkative, let alone naughty. It must have been a dull and lonely life too, for she stayed mainly at home during her childhood, while her brothers were sent to school from an early age.
Nevertheless, my childhood was much freer than Granny's. I went to school with my brother. I played football with him and his friend. We all spoke a common language, and we got up to the same mischief ( 恶作剧 ). I would have died if I had had to stay indoors, wearing tight, stiff clothes.
1 、 The writer thinks that ______.
A . perhaps her grandmother is quite wrong
B . her grandmother complains too much
C . perhaps her grandmother complains too frequently
D . her grandmother may be right
2 、 Who were the grandmother's “ elders and betters ” ?
A . Older people who were better than she was.
B . People of older age and more experience.
C . Very good people who were elderly.
D . Very old people who behaved well.
3 、 Children were expected _______.
A . to keep their mouths shut at all times
B . to hear and not to see
C . to be present but keep silent
D . to be heard but in silence
4 、 The best title for the text might be ______.
A . Children Past And Present
B . Other Times, Other Customs
C . My Dear Granny
D . Be Ever Happy

The other day I watched TV and learned something about women college students. They work hard and study their lessons very well. They’re skilled at using the computer and their English is wonderful. But it’s still hard for them to get suitable jobs after they graduate. They have tried a lot of companies but failed. The only reason is that they’re women. I think it’s unfair. It’s in the 21st century now. In this modern society, women should really enjoy the equal right with men. I think they can do anything that men can.
