Unit 9 Saving the earth
Aims:
1. To train the students’ ability of listening and speaking.
2. To help the students understand the dialogue and master it.
3. To improve the students’ ability of making up dialogues according to given situation and perform them.
Important and difficult points:
1. the use of words and phrases:
be fit for/be fit to do, have got to do, else.
2. sentence structure :
What was the conference like
If the population keeps on growing so quickly, there will only be standing room left for us next century.
Teaching process:
Step 1 Lead-in
Show the students one beautiful picture and get the students to say something about it. Collect the students view on the blackboard. Then give them another two pictures. One is a factory and a power station polluting the air. The other is a pipe polluting the river, and there are dead bodies of creature. Ask the students the following questions:
1. What can you see from the pictures
2. What makes the air dirty
3. What makes the river dirty
Tell the students that today we are going to read a dialogue. The two persons are talking about a conference.
Step 2 Listening
Get the students to close their books and listen to the dialogue with two questions:
1. What was the conference called
( It was called “ saving the earth”.)
2. What will happen if we go on polluting the world
( It won’t be fit for us to live in. )
Play the tape once only and then choose students to give the answers.
Step 3 Reading
Get the students to read the dialogue for two minutes, and then answer the following three questions:
( It won’t be fit for us to live in.)
Play the tape once only and then ask the students to give to the answers.
Step 3 Reading
Give the students two minutes to read the dialogue quickly and loudly. Get the students to pay attention to their pronunciation and intonation. Then get them to answer the following three questions:
1. Why the conference was called “Saving the earth”
( It was all about the damage to the earth. )
( It was all about the damage to the earth.)
2. What did Jackie do at the conference
( He listened to lectures.)
3. What must we Chinese pay special attention to
( The growing of Chinese population.)
Step 4 Explanation
Go through the dialogue and explain some language points. Help the students to memorize some language points by translating some sentences.
★ If we go on polluting the world, it won’t be fit for
us to live in.

Get the students to translate the following two
sentences into English.
1. 他不适应这项工作。
( He isn’t fit for the job. / He isn’t fit to do the job.)
2. 鱼变味了,不适合吃。
( The fish has gone bad and it is not fit to eat.)

( The fish has gone bad and it is not fit to eat.)
★ We’ve got to do something about pollution.
Eg. I’ve got to travel on business twice a month.
Get the students to translate the following sentence.
你们在英语课上必须说英语吗
( Have you got to speak English in the class.)
★ What else did you hear about at the meeting
Get the students to translate the following sentence:
还有谁想跟我一块去?
(Who else want to go with me )
Explain to the students that the word else is used following What, Who, etc.
Step 5 Reciting
At first the teacher gives the key words of the dialogue to the students, let the students try their best to recite the dialogue according to the given key words. Then recite the dialogue according to the following steps:
The first step, the teacher recites the dialogue in higher voice, at the same time; the students listen to the teacher carefully.
The second step, the teacher recites the dialogue in high voice and the students follow the teacher in lower voice.
The third step, choose several students to recite the dialogue in pairs.
The key words are:
Jackie is… Yang Pei about…which Jackie has…

J: Very… It was called…and it… that is being…
Y: What did…
J: Well, we…pollution…nuclear waste…
Y: It’s…hold such…
J: Yes. If we…it won’t be…

Step 6 performance
Show the students two pictures and ask them to make performance according to the given situation. They can choose any situation they like. Give the students four minutes to prepare for the performance. Then choose some pairs to act out their performance in the front of the classroom.
Situation 1: There is a factory polluting the air and pouring wastewater in the river. Imagine you are a journalist and you are interviewing the manager of the factory about the pollution and what he/she will do with the pollution.
Situation 2: There are many trees. Imagine you are a farmer and you want to cut down some of them for some reason. But the trees try their best to persuade you not to cut them down.
Step 7 Homework
1. 必做题:Exs 2, 3 on page 113 ( students book )
2. 选做题:Write a composition according to the given
situation. Show the students a group pictures:
Picture 1: A man is cutting down trees.
Picture 2: Small trees die and nothing to hold the soil.
Picture 3: The soil is blown away by winds.
Picture 4: rains or waters wash the soil into river or lower places.
