Every two years, cities around the world make bids to the International Olympic Commission (IOC) to host the Olympic Games. Today, cities are selected through a much more rigorous (严格的) process.
Any city that wants to host the Olympic Games puts in its name to the IOC and is considered an “Applicant City”. For the next ten months, the IOC investigates the city on several points:
1. The city must prove that it is big enough to handle the Olympics. They also need to
show that they can handle the high level of security needed at the games.
2. The city needs to convince residents that the expenses of covering the Olympics (which may be covered by raising taxes) are worth it in city improvement and new jobs.
3. The cities needs to maintain a highly positive media exposure to carry the games.
If the IOC decides that a city has fulfilled the three points above, the city is considered a “Candidate City” and goes into the second phase of the process. After submitting an application and an application fee, the IOC makes a final judging on which city is the best candidate for the coming Summer or Winter Olympic Games.
The costs for bidding for the games is incredibly high. Bid committees must pay an application fee to the IOC. Following these fees, the cities generally need to begin large construction projects like building the “Olympic village”, new sports arenas (竞技场) and stadiums, and transportation systems.
If the Olympics are so expensive, why do cities want to host the games ? Cities bid for the Olympics for a variety of reasons: the desire to show pride in their city and their country, the eagerness to be in the international spotlight for two weeks, the opportunity to bring new jobs into the community, and to build up tourism to that city.
56. The point that the city must be big enough to handle the Olympics is probably
because ____.
A. it makes sure that there will be enough people to watch the games

the games

e. To pay the application fee to the IOC
A. a, e, b, c, d B. b, a, c, e, d C. c, b, a, d, e D. b, c, e, d, a

If you have been joining in chat room conversations, or trading email with web pals, you have become one of the millions who write in a strange short form of English.
And you've got a sense of humor about short forms like SOHF (= sense of humor failure) to describe Internet newcomers who don't understand you.
Across the globe, every night teenagers and their elders are “talking” online, many of them all talking at the same time.
It's fast: try talking to six people at once. It's brief: three or four words per exchange. It takes wit, concentration, and quick fingers. And it requires linguistic economy ( 语言省略 ). There's neither time nor space for explanations.
Want to enter a conversation? Just type PMFJI ( = pardon me for jumping in).
Interested in whom you are talking to? Type A/S/L, the nearly universal request to know your pal's age, sex and location. You may get 15/M/NY as a response from your pal.
If something makes you laugh, say you are OTF ( = on the floor), or LOL (= laughing out loud), or combing the two into ROTFL ( = rolling on the floor laughing) .
And when it is time to get back to work or go to bed, you type GTG ( = got to go) or TTYL ( = talk to you later).
People want to write as fast as possible, and they want to get their ideas across as quickly as they can. Capital letters are left in the dust, except when expressing emotion, as it takes more time to hold down the “shift” key and capitals. Punctuation (标点) is going, too.
63. Many people talk on the Internet ______.
A. by sending short emails
B. by using a particular short form of English
C. by using peculiar English words and expression
D. in a funny way
64. In order to talk to several people at the same time on the Internet ______.
A. you have to speak fast and fluently
B. you should speak with wit and humor
C. you have to express your ideas in a brief way
D. one should pay much attention to the accuracy of words
65. If you get 17/F/NY as an answer to your A/S/L, it means______.
A. the person on the other end is 17 from New York and he is fine
B. you are talking to a girl who is 17 and lives in New York
C. you are talking to 17 girls who are from New York
D. the person who you are talking to is a 17 - foot tall New York girl
66. To save time on the Internet, __________.
A. some people leave their letters in the dustbin
B. some people never use "shift" in their writing
C. many people leave the capital and punctuation
D. people seldom use capital letters or punctuation
D
LONDON ( Reuters)-- Ecotourism is causing a lot of damage to wildlife and may be endangering the survival of the very animals many people go to see, according to researchers.
Biologists and conservationists (自然环境保护论者) are worried because polar bears, dolphins, penguins and other creatures are getting stressed and losing weight and some are dying.
“Evidence is growing that many animals do not react well to tourists in their backyard,” New Scientist magazine said.
The immediate effects researchers have noticed are changes in behavior, heart rates, or stress hormone(荷尔蒙) levels but they fear it could get much worse and over the long term “could endanger the survival of the very wildlife they want to see”.
Although money produced through ecotourism, which has been growing at about 10 --- 30 percent a year, has major benefits for poor countries and people living in rural areas, the Swiss-based World Conservation Union and some governments fear not all projects are audited (审计) and based on environmentally friendly policies, according to the magazine,
“The transmission of disease to wildlife, or small changes to wildlife health through disturbance of daily life or increased stress levels, while not obvious to the casual observer, may translate to lower survival and breeding,” said Philip Seddon, of the University of Otago in Dunedin, New Zealand.
Scientists have noticed that bottleneck dolphins along the northeastern coast of New Zealand become nervously excited when tourist boats arrive. Similar changes in behavior have been observed in polar bears and yellow-eyed penguins in areas visited by ecotourists are producing smaller babies.
Conservationists are now calling for more research into the effect of ecotourism on animals and say the industry must be developed carefully. They also want studies done before new ecotourism projects are started.
“The animals’ welfare should be very important because without them there will be no ecotourism,” said Rochelle Constantine of the University of Auckland in New Zealand.
67. What's the text mainly about?
A. Many animals are dying because of lack of money.
B. There will be no ecotourism without animals.
C. Ecotourism could endanger the survival of the wildlife.
D. More research should be done on ecotourism.
68. We may learn from the text that ________.
A. ecotourism must be developed properly
B. polar bears are losing weight without enough food
C. all the poor countries have stopped ecotourism
D. money produced through ecotourism should be spent on wildlife
69. Which of the following is TRUE according to the text?
A. Many animals get on well with the tourists.
B. Polar bears in areas visited by ecotourists are producing smaller babies.
C. People living in rural areas hasn’t taken advantage of ecotourism.
D. Studies should be done before new ecotourism projects are started.
70. What Rochelle Constantine said in the last paragraph implies that ______.
A. if people want to get high income, they must develop ecotourism
B. animals have rights to live their own life
C. animals are people’s good friends
D. people should take good care of wildlife
E
“Humans should not try to avoid stress any more than they would shun food, love or exercise.” said Dr. Hans Selye, the first physician to document the effects of stress on the body. While there’s no question that continuous stress is harmful, several studies suggest that challenging situations in which you’re able to rise to the occasion can be good for you.
In a 2001 study of 158 hospital nurses, those who faced considerable work demands but dealt with the challenge were more likely to say they were in good health than those who felt they couldn’t get the job done. Stress that you can manage may also increase immune (免疫) fun_ction. In a study at the Academic Center for Dentistry in Amsterdam, researchers put volunteers through two stressful experiences. In the first, a timed task that required memorizing a list followed by a short test, the volunteers believed they had control over the result. In the second, they weren’t in control: They had to sit through a video of blood and killing. Those who did go on the memory test had an increase in levels of immunoglobulin A, an antibody that's the body’s first line of defense against germs (病菌). The video-watchers experienced a downturn in the antibody.
Stress prompts the body to produce certain stress hormones. In short bursts these hormones have a positive effect, including improved memory fun_ction. “They can help handle information and put it into storage,” says Dr. Bruce McEwen of Rockefeller University in New York. But in the long run these hormones can have a harmful effect on the body and brain.
“Continuous stress is not good for you,” says Richard Morimoto, a researcher at Northwestern University in Illinois studying the effects of stress on longevity(长寿), “It’s the irregular burst of stress or brief exposure to stress that could be protective.”
71. The passage is mainly about ______
A. the benefits of manageable stress
B. how to avoid stressful situations
C. how to cope with stress effectively
D. the effects of stress hormones on memory
72. The underlined word “shun” most probably means ________.
A cut down on B stay away from
C run out of D put up with
73. We can conclude from the study of the 158 nurses in 2001 that _______
A. people under stress tend to have a poor memory
B. people who can’t get their job done experience more stress
C. doing challenging work may be good for one’s health
D. stress will weaken the body’s defense against germs
74. In the experiment described in Paragraph 3, the video-watchers experienced a
downturn in the antibody because ______.
A. the video was not enjoyable at all
B. the result was beyond their control
C. they knew little about surgical procedures
D. they felt no pressure while watching the video
75. Dr. Bruce McEwen of Rockefeller University believes that ______.
A. a person’s memory is determined by the level of hormones in his body
B. stress hormones have lasting positive effects on the brain
C. short bursts of stress hormones improve memory fun_ction
D. a person’s memory improves with continued experience of stress.

听力材料
M: What! Ten minutes ago you told me there were no rooms. You just gave one to that man! W: You don’t seem to understand, sir. That man has a reservation.
M: Your folks tell me that you are living off campus. Have you got used to living on your own? W: Well, if I haven’t by now, I guess I never will.
M: There’s nothing serious. You’ve just had a cold. I’ll advise some medicine for you. W: Thank you very much, Mr. Henry.
W: Why do they die off? I thought they were continuously improving themselves. Natural selection, I think you once mentioned. M: Ah, but you see while there is natural competition between the species, what determines which species survive is largely by chance.
M: Good morning, Mrs. Andrews. How’s your dog this morning? I have been thinking about him… W: Have you? Well, he seems alright now, but…. M: Yesterday morning he and I had a little accident. He jumped at me and I dropped a bottle of milk on his head.
W: Hi, Bob. What a surprise! So nice to see you again! M: Hello, Ann! How long has it been? Wasn’t it a year ago at Christmas, the last time I saw you? W: I think you’re right. How are your children and Susan? M: Oh, they’re fine. Billy fell down and broke his leg a few months ago, but other than that, there has been nothing special. W: And your wife? How’s she doing? M: Susan is going to a night school on Mondays and Thursdays. W: Oh, it’s nice!
W: I think we ought to turn round and head back home. M: Tired after just a few kilometers of cycling? W: Not at all. But look at the clouds building up there. M: So? I don’t really care if it gets cloudy. The sun is quite strong. W: Right. But those clouds mean a storm and a lot of rain. M: That doesn’t sound so great, but I thought they were fair weather clouds. W: No, those are thick dark clouds. They will bring rain and storms. M: How did you ever learn all that? From your geography teacher or by reading? W: No, I grew up on a farm. I learned a lot about the weather.
W: In this edition of “Generation Next”, I’ll interview Bill. First of all, thank you for joining us. M: Not at all. W: Bill, perhaps you’d tell us about your memories of your first day away from home. M: Oh, yes. At the age of 10, I went to stay with my aunt in New York. It wasn’t a happy experience. I felt a bit homesick. W: Mmm, what about your first day at school? M: My first day at school? When I was five years old, I wanted to take some toys with me, but they wouldn’t let me. In the end, it was agreed that I could take my teddy with me on the first day. W: Oh, I see. Your school days, were they happy ones. M: I’m afraid not. I was not very bright and the teacher didn’t seem to like me. W: Oh, poor boy!
M: Cathy, can you tell me about your first holiday away from home? W: Oh, yes. When I was eight, I went to the Yellow Stone National Park with my parents. We stayed at a small hotel. I remember we had honey and porridge for breakfast. It was terrible. M: What about your first day at school? W: I couldn’t remember much. I was very shy and frightened, but I soon got over it and began to enjoy school. M: What about your teachers? Did you have your favorite teacher? W: I did. I remember well. His name is Phil. He was our history teacher. He really made history come to life. M: Oh, that’s interesting.
W: I would like to know how to make out this check? M: Right. Em… do you want to draw out some money? W: Yes. $200. M: &$200. OK. Well, the first thing you need to do is to write today’s date in top right-hand corner where you see the line, at the top you write just today’s date… and the year. You must put the year in. And if you want to draw out money after it says pay … can you see over on the left-hand side? W: The first … line? M: That’s it. On the first line it says PAY and you write CASH afterwards. W: in letters? M: Yes. CASH, you write cash, OK? Then below that, right below that, you have to write the amount of money you want. So just two hundred pounds and then you write ONLY at the end in words. Then at the end of that line where you can see the box, see over on the right-hand side, you have to write the amount you want in numbers. And then below the box, the last thing you have to do in the bottom right-hand corner is just write your signature. W: OK. Thank you very much.

A recent survey has showed that the health of the students in our school has been going from bad to worse in the past three years.
The number of nearsighted students has increased from 78.2% in 2003 to 92.5 % this year, while that of overweight students from 36% to 52.4%. Nearly 10 % more students lack sleep because of more homework to do. Besides, over 15 % more students become mentally unhealthy.
To improve students’ health, we call for less homework. Only in this way can students get plenty of sleep and meanwhile prevent them from being nearsighted. Proper diets and exercise should also be paid attention to so that they won’t easily put on weight. With their heavy burdens removed, students can then keep in normal mental health.
