Are you happy with your teeth? Becca, a 15-year-old girl from the US is not. She decided her teeth needed to be whiter. “They weren't that bad, but I wanted to make them all the same colour”, she said. In the last five years, teeth whitening has become very popular among young Americans. Now the trend (潮流) has come to China. If you turn on the TV you can see the Hong Kong pop star Karen Mok showing her bright white teeth, saying, "want to be like me? Use white teeth strips (牙贴)!" You may even have decided to buy one. But wait a minute. Dentists have something to say. They think that kids should not use whitening products until they are 16 or even older. "We don't know what will happen yet," says Dr. Nasrin Azim, a dentist in Chicago. "Studies have not been done on young people. I wouldn't do teeth whitening on anyone under 18." The problem with whitening lies in the pulp (牙髓), the innermost (最深处的) part of the tooth. It has the tooth's nerve (神经) ending. When we eat very hot or cold things, it's the pulp that hurts. Kids have larger pulps. The larger pulp might make teeth more sensitive (敏感的) to whitening and get hurt. Another problem is that the gums around the teeth usually change shape (形状) with age. So, if someone whitens his or her teeth during childhood, the darker, natural colour might show later around the gum line. At that time, your teeth will show two colours. And the darker colour is difficult to whiten. So, wait another few years before you make your teeth whiter. Or if you really want to do it, ask your dentist. They'll give you useful advice. 66. This passage mainly talks about ____. A. how to whiten your teeth B. the new trend of whitening teeth C. Americans with white teeth D. dentists' advice on tooth whitening 67. A. it is inside the teeth B. it is sick C. it is rich in nerves D. it is not used to this kind of food 69. What may happen if children do tooth whitening according to dentists? A. Their teeth may show two colours later. B. Their gums may change shape with age. C. Their teeth may get darker. D. They may lose their teeth. 70. We can infer from the passage that ____. A. dentists like very much the idea of tooth whitening B. more and more people in China will get their teeth whitened C. it's necessary for children to whiten their teeth D. tooth whitening will certainly bring good results for people.

British newspapers are among the oldest and most famous in the world. But recently big changes have seen these traditional publications try to fit the modern world. After 216 years, The Times (《泰晤士报》) has changed its size to become much smaller. In fact, the paper has cut its size in half from a broadsheet to tabloid. In Britain the newspaper market is divided between the larger broadsheets and the smaller tabloids. These terms refer to the size of the papers' pages but there is also a clear difference in content. Broadsheets such as The Times, the Guardian (《卫报》) and Daily Telegraph (《每日电讯报》) are serious papers. They cover a broad range of political, economic and international issues. Their stories are also reasonably long and use quite formal language. Tabloids have far more stories about less serious issues such as celebrities' love lives. Their stories are shorter and use more simple language. Tabloids often have bigger pictures. Britain's best-selling newspaper, the Sun, is a tabloid and has a naked (裸体的) girl on page three everyday. By changing to the size of a tabloid, The Times is following in the footsteps of a less famous broadsheet paper the Independent (《独立报》). It changed to tabloid last year and saw its sales increase greatly. Although both papers have switched to the smaller size the content of the papers has remained the same. They are both still serious papers. The two papers claim that people find the smaller size easier to handle when they travel to work on the bus or the train in the morning. Instead of calling the new style of their paper tabloid, the paper says its new size is "compact" (紧凑型).(The passage is from 21st century Issue 52 2004.10.07)
In which year was The Times born? A. 1782 B. 1785 C. 1788 D. 1786
Which is the most correct statement? A. Broadsheets are larger in size while tabloids are smaller. B. Tabloids are less serious than broadsheets. C. Broadsheets contain more news than tabloids. D. They are different in size, content and the style of language.
In which of the following newspapers would you find more news about the personal life of the famous soccer star Beckham? A. The Sun B. The Times C. The Independent D. The Guardian
According to the passage we can infer the main reason for The Times' changing into the tabloid is that_____. A. it wants to become convenient for people to carry. B. it wants to increase its circulation (发行量). C. it intends to copy what The Independent has done. D. it is unlikely to stay in business if it does not change.
Which of the following statements is true according to the given information? A. There are more tabloids than broadsheets in Britain at present. B. After the change, there will be no differences between The Sun and The Times. C. Although The Times has cut its size, it remains a serious paper. D. All the papers will tend to have the same style in the future.

When someone has deeply hurt you, it can be extremely difficult to let go of your anger. But forgiveness is possible - and it can be surprisingly helpful to your physical and mental health. Indeed, research has shown that people who forgive report more energy, better appetite (胃口) and better sleep patterns. "People who forgive show less anger and more hopefulness," says Dr. Frederic Luskin, who wrote the book Forgive for Good. " So it can help save on the wear and tear on our system and allow people to feel more energetic."
So when someone has hurt you, calm yourself first. Take a couple of breaths and think of something that gives you pleasure: a beautiful scene in nature, someone you love. Don' t wait for an apology. "Many times the person who hurt you may never think of apologizing," says Dr. Luskin. "They may have wanted to hurt you or they just don't see things the same way. So if you wait for people to apologize, you could be waiting a very long time. " Keep in mind that forgiveness does not necessarily mean accepting the action of the person who upset you. Mentally going over your hurt gives power to the person who brought you pain. Instead, learn to look for the love, beauty and kindness around you. Finally, try to see things from the other person' s perspective(视角). You may realize that he or she-was acting out of ignorance (无知) , fear - even love. To gain perspective, you may want to write a letter to yourself from that person' s point of view.

How Long Can People Live?
She took up skating at age 85, made her first movie appearance at age 114, and held a concert in the neighborhood on her 121 st birthday.
When it comes to long life, Jeanne Calment is the world’s recordholder. She lived to the ripe old age of 122. So is 122 the upper limit to the human life span(寿命)? If scientists come up with some sort of pill or diet that would slow aging, could we possibly make it to 150-or beyond?
Researchers don’t entirely agree on the answers. “Calment lived to 122, so it wouldn’t surprise me if someone alive today reaches 130 or 135, ”says Jerry Shay at the University of Texas.
Steve Austad at the University of Texas agrees. “People can live much longer than we think, ”he says. “Experts used to say that humans couldn’t live past 110. When Calment blew past that age, they raised the number to 120. So why can’t we go higher? ”
The trouble with guessing how old people can live to be is that it’s all just guessing. “Anyone can make up a number, ”says Rich Miller at the University of Michigan. “Usually the scientist who picks the highest number gets his name in Time magazine. ”
Won’t new anti-aging techniques keep us alive for centuries? Any cure, says Miller, for aging would probably keep most of us kicking until about 120. Researchers are working on treatments that lengthen the life span of mice by 50 percent at most. So, if the average human life span is about 80 years, says Miller, “adding another 50 percent would get you to 120. ”
So what can we conclude from this little disagreement among the researchers? That life span is flexible(有弹性的), but there is a limit, says George Martin of the University of Washington. “We can get flies to live 50 percent longer, ”he says. “But a fly’s never going to live 150 years. ”Of course, if you became a new species (物种), one that ages at a slower speed, that would be a different story, he adds.
Does Martin really believe that humans could evolve (进化)their way to longer life? “It’s pretty cool to think about, ”he says with a smile.
59. What does the story of Jeanne Calment prove to us?
A. People can live to 122.
B. Old people are creative.
C. Women are sporty at 85.
D. Women live longer than men.
60. According to Steve Austad at the University of Texas, ______.
A. the average human life span could be 110
B. scientists cannot find ways to slow aging
C. few people can expect to live to over 150
D. researchers are not sure how long people can live
61. Who would agree that a scientist will become famous if he makes the wildest guess at longevity?
A. Jerry Shay.
B. Steve Austad
C. Rich Miller
D. George Martin
62. What can we infer from the last three paragraphs?
A. Most of us could be good at sports even at 120.
B. The average human life span cannot be doubled
C. Scientists believe mice are aging at a slower speed than before.
D. New techniques could be used to change flies into a new species

It was not until one hundred and fifty years ago that scientists learned about the existence of dinosaurs (恐龙). Thanks to an English doctor and his wife, the door was opened to this zoological study. Reasoning that the reptiles’ (爬行动物) huge size must have made them terrible creatures, scientists combined two Greak words, “deimos”, meaning “terrible” , and “sauros” , meaning “lizards’ , to form the word “dimosaur”.
After many years of study, they determined that these beasts roamed the earth for millions of years, and ceased to exist some sixty million years ago.
Unbelievable as it may seem , not all dinosaurs were carnivorous, that is, meat eating. Many were herbivorous, or vegetarians.
By reassembling the bones found at excavation (发掘) sites, scientists have been able to reconstruct the skeletons (骨架) and ;earn a great deal about the dinosaurs’ living conditions. They have learned that dinosaurs inhabited not only the land, but also the water and sky.
What is the passage mainly about?
The mane of the dinosaur.
The food of dinosaurs.
The living conditions of dinosaurs.

In the 1960s, Muhammad Ali was a brilliant, fast, skilful and intelligent boxer. In 1964, he became heavyweight boxing champion of the world. Ali was born with the name Cassius Clay in 1942. But he has always hated that name because he says it is his “white” name. Martin Luther King and his speeches influenced Ali, even as a boy, and he took a “black” name when he was a young man. This is why, at the age of eighteen Cassius Clay was drinking a cup of coffee in a café in his home town, Louisville, USA, when some men asked him to leave the café because he was black. At the age of twenty-five Ali had more problems. He was a pacifist and he did not fight for the United States in the Vietnam War in the 1960s. Because of that some people stopped him from boxing for three-and–a-half years, from 1967. Now Muhammad Ali is an old man. Because of his years of boxing he walks and talks slowly. He was watching when his twenty-three-year-old daughter Laila had her first fight on 9 October 1999 in New York. Many people don’t like boxing with women boxers but they haven’t stopped it yet, so at the moment Laila is boxing and she is very good at it. She won her first fight in thirty-one seconds and she has won all her fights up to now.
73Who was Muhammad Ali?
A. A white woman boxer B. A white man boxer
C. A black man boxer D. A black woman boxer
74. Why some people stopped Ali from boxing between 1967 and 1970?
A. Because he was a pacifist
B. Because he did not fight for the United States in the Vietnam War in 1960s.
C. Because he was black.
D. Both A and B.
75. Choose the correct meaning of the word “ pacifist” in the sentence “He was a pacifist and he did not fight for the United States in the Vietnam War in the 1960s.”
A. a person who likes war B. a person who likes peace
C. a person who doesn’t like the United States. D. a person who hates the white

三、阅读理解:(共20小题,满分40分)
阅读下面短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中,选出最佳选项,并把答案写在答题卷上。
A
It is sometimes said that strange flying objects have been seen high up in the sky. People call these strange objects Unidentified Flying Objects (UFOS). These UFOs caused a lot of interest. Some of the reports about them are difficult to believe. Some have been explained in scientific ways. Others have never been explained. Here is an account of UFOs from a report. Dennis Burdens, who wrote an article, tells us that he once saw a UFO himself. He was having dinner one night with a friend near Tripoli, Libya, and after dinner the two men walked across a yard to his room to look at some papers. Burdens noticed that the moon looked strange that night. “It wasn’t the moon”, was the reply. They watched the light and saw that it was moving. It seemed to be an object rather like a big plate. In some ways it looked like smoke with a light on it, but it wasn’t smoke because it didn’t change its shape. It was moving in a regular way. That is to say, it didn’t go suddenly faster or more slowly, and it didn’t go higher or lower. So the two men decided that there must be men in it. After that, Burdens said that he felt eyes looking at him. He was being watched in the darkness. When it was nearer, they noticed that the bottom parts were brighter than the top. The bottom was yellow and the top red. Then the object suddenly turned away and left Libya, moving very fast. On a later day Burdens talked to other people about it, and he found some who had seen it. They all described it in the same way. Could they all be mistaken? 56. UFOs are _____. A . flying high up in the sky B. strange flying objects C. difficult to believe D. very interested 57. The UFO moved _____. A. regularly B. in a changeable way C. slowly D. fast 58. The UFO looked like _____. A. smoke B. a large plate C. light D. a jumping object 59. The UFO was seen _____. A. by Burdens and his friend
B. brighter in the darkness C. by several people
D. to have a yellow bottom and a red top in the same way B We often hear people say, “I have a good memory for things like that” or “I can remember names”. But do you know memory is the single most important thing and it has played a very important part? For early men, there were dangerous all around them----bad weather, wild animals. The keys to keep on living lay in man’s ability to remember these dangers and the ways he had dealt with them in the past. In order for memories to be stored, the human brain became more complex. And as man learned how to deal with them, he became civilized (文明).Surprisingly, scientists today understand little about memory and how it works. They have not yet found a way to open up the brain and observe its fun_ction without destroying it. Perhaps there are two types of memory: short-term and long-term. Short-term refers to those facts that stay with us for a few seconds to a few hours. For instance, when you stay at a hotel, you remember the room number and forget as soon as you leave. Long-term memory, on the other hand, means you remember things for a long period of time. If you spend your honeymoon in a particular hotel, it’s likely that you’ll remember your stay quite clearly. Scientists also believe that a short-term memory can become a long-term memory through consolidation(巩固). A lot of chemical and physical changes take place in the part of the brain. Although the human brain weighs three pounds, it contains 30 billion nerve cells(神经细胞) acting like a computer. Ralph was driving. He rolled down the window and swam to safety. You other two friends were in back. They drowned because they couldn’t get the tail gate down. When we hear the words “ college students”, we usually think of a young person between 18 and 22 years old. But in the U.S.A today, a college student often is much older. In fact, educators say in the next few years colleges and universities may have more older part-time students than traditional (传统的) full-time younger students.
Educators report a big increase in the number of Americans who attend college and university classes in the evening or at night or weekends. Most of them are older than 25 years old and more have full-time or part-time jobs. Many are in their thirties or forties.
Why are so many people deciding to spend their time and money in order to continue their education? Most are doing it because they believe more education will help them to get a better job. Some are industrial workers whose factories have closed. They are learning new skills to prepare for other kinds of work. Some of the part-time students are not pleased with the jobs they have. They are studying for new ones. Some have retired (退休) and are looking for new kinds of work. Two of every three of the students older than 35 are women. Many of them are returning to school after years of staying at home to care for children.
Are older students good students? Most teachers say yes. They say older students really want to learn. They ask difficult questions and are not pleased with simple answers. They often get high grades.

Charles Chaplin, who died in 1977, is considered one of the greatest and funniest actors in the history of the cinema. During his lifetime, he acted in 13 films, and he wrote, directed and acted in 69 other films.
Chaplin was born in London in 1889.When a poor boy, he was often seen waiting outside the London theatres, hoping to get work in show business. He could sing and dance, and above all, he knew how to make people laugh. But he couldn’t get work and therefore wandered about the city streets. Sometimes he was sent away to a home for children who had not parents.
Charlie Chaplin first acted when he was five. He broke into show business because his mother, a music-hall performer, lost her voice during the performance and had to leave the stage, and Charlie went on and sang a well-known song. Halfway through the song a shower of money poured onto the stage. Charlie stopped singing and told audiences he would pick the money first and then finish the song. The audiences laughed. This was the first of millions of laughs in Charlie Chaplin’s fabulous career(神话般的生涯).
Twenty years later the same Chaplin became the greatest and best loved comedian in the world. His dream came true in the end. Chaplin became world-famous and almost a king in the world of the film.
Even people who don’t understand English can enjoy Chaplin’s films because they are mostly silent. The equipment for adding sound to films had not yet been developed. The development of films with sound became a problem for Chaplin, as he was uncertain about making films with dialogues. Instead, he continued to make films without dialogue, but he added music, which he wrote himself. It isn’t what he says that makes us laugh. His comedy doesn’t depend on words. It depends on little actions which mean the same thing to people the world over.
Chaplin’s later films, however, were not well received. Chaplin lived most of his life in America and the last years in Switzerland, where he was buried at Christmas 1977, at the age of eighty-eight. There was sadness all over the world at the news of his death.
In his book, Chaplin tells us how to succeed in life. He says, “You have to believe in yourself. That’s the secret.”
72. Chaplin is regarded as king of comedy mainly because _______.
he acted out the common human situations best in his comedy
he could sing and dance well
he knew how to make people laugh
lots of people have seen his films
73. What makes people laugh in Chaplin’s films?
It isn’t his words but his actions B. Neither his words nor actions
C. Either his words or his actions D. Not only his words but also his actions
74. The only secret of Charles Chaplin’s huge success is that _______.
he can make all people, men and women, old and young laugh
he has full trust in himself
he is always active and hard-working all his life
though he is always in trouble, he never loses heart
75. Which of the following statements is true according to the passage?
He was too shy to meet the managers of the theatres.
People won’t stop laughing until tears run down Chaplin’s face.
People all over the world can enjoy Chaplin’s films without translation because most of them are silent.
He wouldn’t like to work at the theatre.

There are many problems connected with space travel. The first and greatest of them is gravity. If you let your pencil drop to the floor, you can see gravity in action. Everything is held down to the earth by magnetic(磁) force. The weight of something is another way of describing the amount of force taking place on it by gravity. A rocket must go at least 2,500 miles an hour to take anyone out of the gravity of the earth into space.
Once out of the earth’s gravity, an astronaut is affected by still another problem----weightlessness. Here, if a pencil drops, it does not fall. If a glass of water is turned upside down, the water will not fall out. All of us who are used to gravity expect things to have weightless conditions.
Recent long flights have shown that the body needs special exercise in a spaceship.
65. A ripe( 成熟)apple will fall to the earth by_______.
A. itself ’s force B. earth’s force C. magnetic force D. gravity

X-rays were first discovered by a German scientist, Wilhelm Konrad Rontgen, in 1895, almost by chance.
While he was experimenting with electric current(电流) through certain gases in a special glass tube(管), Rontgen happened to notice that, even when the tube was covered with black paper, some strange kind of radiation was coming through and making a screen nearby glow(发光). Then he pat the screen in the next room of a closed door, the screen was still glowing. The screen showed that the strange rays could not only pass through black paper but also wood.
Rontgen next put his hand between these unseen rays and a photographic plate. The
rays would print a shadow of bony frame-work(结构) of his hand on the plate.
In this way, Rontgen discovered such rays and made the first X-ray picture of a hand, showing just how the bones in the hand fit together. Rontgen named these new rays X-rays, which was called by other scientists Rontgen rays.

Anna Douglas was 72 years old when she started writing her newspaper column. After she retired, she found a volunteer job with an agency. The agency that she chose to work for was a business that helped other businesses find jobs for old people. Every day she talked with other retired people like herself. By talking, she recognized two things: Old people had abilities that were not being used. Old people also had problems—mostly problems with communication.
Mrs Douglas found a new purpose for herself. Through the year, from time to time she had written stories about people for national magazines. Now there was a new subject: old people like herself. She began to write a newspaper column called “Sixty Plus,” which focuses on getting old. She writes about the problems of old people, especially their problems with being misunderstood.
Anna Douglas used her thinking ability to see the truth behind a problem. She understands the reasons why problems begin. She understands old people and young people, too. For example, one of her readers said that his grandchildren left the house as soon as he came to visit. Mrs Douglas suggested some ways for him to increase understanding with his grandchildren. She told him to listen to young people’s music and to watch the most popular television shows.
“It’s important to know something about your grandchildren’s world,” says Mrs Douglas. “That means questions and listening—and listening is not what old people do best.” She continues,“Say good things to them and about them. Never criticize your grandchildren or any other youngsters, teenagers, or young adults. Never tell them that they are wrong. Don’t give them your opinion. They have been taught that they should have respect for old people. The old should have respect for the young as well. ”

with grandchildren?

C. Give more explanations. D. Try to understand his grandchildren.
59.According to Mrs Douglas, old people need to learn how to __________.
A. work B. criticize C. listen D. complain
60.According to the last paragraph, the main point of Mrs Douglas’ advice is that old people
___________.
A. have a lot to learn from the young B. should understand and respect the young
C. had better improve their hearing in order to understand the young
should show respect for the young even when criticizing them

Tourism probably started in Roman times. Rich Romans visited friends and family who were working in another part of the Roman empire. But when the empire broke down, this kind of tourism stopped.
In the early 17th century, the idea of the “Grand Tour” was born. Rich young English people sailed across the English Channel(英吉利海峡). They visited the most beautiful and important European cities of the time, including Paris in France, and Rome and Venice(威尼斯)in Italy. Their tours lasted for two to four years, and the tourists stayed a few weeks or months in each city. The “Grand Tour” was an important part of young people’s education—but only for the rich.
In the 18th century, tourism began to change. For example, people in the UK started to visit some towns, such as Bath to “take the waters”. They believed that the water there was good for their health. So large and expensive hotels were built in these towns.
In the 19th century, travel became much more popular and faster. When the first railways were built in the 1820s, it was easier for people to travel between towns, so they started to go for holidays by the sea. And some started to have holidays in the countryside as cities became larger, noisier and dirtier.
Traveling by sea also became faster and safer when the first steamships were built. People began to travel more to far away countries.
The 20th century saw cars become more and more popular among ordinary people. Planes were made larger, so ticket prices dropped and more people used them.
Thus tourism grew. In 1949, Russian journalist Vladimir Raitz started a company called Horizon Holidays. The company organizes everything—plane tickets, hotel rooms, even food—and tourists pay for it all before they leave home. The package tour and modern tourist industry was born.
The first travel agency in China was set up as early as 1949. But tourism did not take off until 1978. In 2002, the industry was worth 500 billion yuan and became an important part of China’s social development.
61.In the early times, the travelers __________.
A. all came from Roman B. were very young and strong
C. had lots of money D. traveled by boat
62.Which is NOT true about “Grand Tour”?
A. It was a long journey. B. The young men learned a lot from it.
Those who took the tour weren’t rich. D. Most of its destinations were in Europe.
63._________played the most important role in the tourism development.
A. Education B. Money C. Transportation D. People’s ideas
64.Modern tourism was born ___________.
A. in 1949 B. in Roman times C. in the early 17th century D. in the 19th century
65.The underlined phrase “take off” (the last paragraph) means __________.
A. a plane rising into the air B. develop very fast
C. remove hats and clothes D. bring down the prices

Most dog owners feel that their dogs are their best friends. Almost everyone likes dogs because they try hard to please their owners. One of my favorite stories is about a dog who wanted his owner to please him.
One of my friends has a large German shepherd ( 牧羊狗) named Jack. Every Sunday afternoon, my friend takes Jack for a walk in the park. Jack likes these long walks very much.
One Sunday afternoon, a young man came to visit my friend. He stayed a long time, and he talked and talked. Soon it was time for my friend to take Jack for his walk, but the visitor didn’t leave. Jack became very worried about his walk in the park. He walked around the room several times and then sat down directly in front of the visitor and looked at him. But the visitor paid no attention. He continued talking. Finally, Jack couldn’t stand it any longer. He went out of the room and came back a few minutes later. He sat down again in front of the visitor, but this time he held the man’s hat in his mouth.
German shepherds aren’t the only intelligent dogs. Another intelligent dog is a Seeing Eye dog. This is a special dog which helps blind people walk along the streets and do many other things. We call these dogs Seeing Eye dogs because they are the “eye” of the blind people and they help them to “see”. Seeing Eye dogs generally go to special schools for several years to learn to help blind people.

In Jane Austin’s time, unmarried girls were always closely guarded, and hardly allowed to be alone with a young man; and during the Victorian period (just the period after Jane Austin) exposure(暴露) of the body in particular was thought to be most immoral, Victorian ladies wore dresses reaching down to their feet, long in the sleeve and high at the neck. Since then, ways of dressing as well as times have changed. Girls were no longer guarded, and they can do more or less what they like. And yet among all these astonishing changes, one thing has remained much the same for most people, and that is the same of becoming a mother before being married. If this does happen, there often comes a quick marriage with the responsible man. If this is impossible, the affair may bring considerable shame to the girl’s parents as well as to herself.
It is now quite normal for a girl, once past the age of about fifteen, to go out with a boyfriend, and although her parents will probably insist that she come home at a certain time, beyond this they depend on her or look after herself. Kisses between young men and women are now considered to be perfectly normal, but although times have changed so much, most people still believe that a woman should not become a mother before being married.
65. In Jane Austin periods, a girl______________ before her marriage.
A. always faced all kinds of dangers.
B. was not permitted to get in touch with men.
C. was always carefully kept staying morally pure
D. usually felt lonely.
66. From the article, we learn that ________________.
A. an unmarried girl must come back home for the night.
B. it is good for a girl of 15 to have a boyfriend.
C. the unmarried girl who has a baby needn’t get married at once.
D. a girl of 15 has the right to be alone with her boyfriend.
67. The main idea of this article is that _________.
A. a girl should not become a mother before being married.
B. girls are no longer closely guarded.
C. ways of dressing have changed with the time.
D. exposure of the body has been thought to be immoral

Thanks to the huge success of Harry Potter, many teenagers dream about living in an ancient castle. These dreams may include beautiful silk dresses, delicious food, servants and of course, magic. However, real life in an English castle was not easy. With thick stonewalls and high towers, castles were built for defence. So they were not good places to live in. In medieval times, castles must have been noisy and smelly places. Horses, cattle, chickens and sheep walked free, blacksmiths did ironwork, soldiers practised sword (剑) fights, and children of all ages played around them. Castles did not have central heating; the only heat came from the fireplace. Even in summer the castle was cool. People living in the castles had to use blankets to keep warm while at work.
Life during the Middle Ages began at sunrise. Servants lit the fire, swept the floor and cooked the morning meal. The mid-morning meal was the main meal of the day and often included three or four courses (一道菜). After dinner, everyone continued his or her work. The owner of the castle, the lord, sometimes took his guests hunting or shooting. His wife, the lady, spent much of the day watching the maids (女仆) work, as well as people working in the kitchen. She also kept an eye on the weavers and embroiderers who made clothes for the family. Supper was simple and eaten late, just before bedtime.
You may find some old magic books in a castle as Harry Potter once did. Read them before you go to bed, because when you fall asleep the magic of castle life may appear before your eyes.
68. For what purpose were the castles built in England?
A. To raise poultry (家禽) and livestock (家畜).
B. To provide a working place for blacksmiths.
C. To defend the city or country against enemies.
D. To provide a place for teenagers to learn magic.
69. Why were the ancient castles noisy?
A. Because soldiers practiced sword fights there.
B. Because blacksmiths did ironwork there.
C. Because children of all ages played around them.
D. All of the above.
70. Which of the following about family life in castles is true according to the passage?
A. The servants in castles lived an easy life.
B. Supper was eaten before sunset.
C. The wife spent much of the day at home.
D. Dinner was eaten in the middle of the day.
71. The main idea of this passage is ______.
A. castles were not good places to live in
B. castles in novels are different from those in history
C. Harry Potter's story in a castle affected people
D. what real life was like in an ancient castle

After the terrible car accident, the whole world had been completely dark and quiet for Robert Edwards for almost ten years, for he became both blind and deaf after the doctor had saved him. The loss of sight and hearing threw him into such a sorrow that he tried a few times to put end to his life.
His family especially his wife did their best to tend and comfort him. By and by he finally regained the courage to live on.
On a hot summer afternoon he was taking a walk with a stick near his house when a thunderstorm started all at once. He stood under a large tree in order not to get himself wet. Unfortunately he was struck down to the ground by a lightning. The witnesses thought him dead but he woke up some 20 minutes later lying face down in muddy water below the tree. He felt that he was trembling badly, but when he opened his eyes ,he didn’t dare to believe that he saw a plough( 犁子 )lying near the wall. When Mrs Edwards came running up to him, she shouted their neighbours for help. And he saw her and heard her voice for the first time in nearly ten years.
The news of Robert’s regaining his sight and hearing quickly spread in his area. And many doctors came to prove the truth of the news. Most of them said that he gained sight and hearing again obviously from the knock of lightning; none of them could give convincing reasons, however. The only reasonable explanation given by one doctor was that, since Edwards lost his sight and hearing as a result of sudden shock in a terrible accident, perhaps the only way for them to regain was by another sudden shock.
72. What did Edwards see first after being struck down by a lightning?
A. His wife B. The large tree
C.A plough D. The lightning itself
73. Which of the following is NOT true?
A. Edwards had been deaf and blind for nearly ten years
B. Edwards lost all his scenes for about 20 minutes after the lightning had struck him down
C. Doctor held the belief that Edwards was never really blind and deaf.
D. Edwards woke up with face in mud.
74. What was Edwards doing when he was struck by the lightning?
A. Hiding from the rain under a tree. B. Driving a car.
C. Taking a walk D. lying on the ground
75. How did Edwards get his sight and hearing once more according to the doctor?
A. He regained them from head injury when he fell from a tree.
B. His wife’s first visit after almost ten years made him so happy that he regained them.
C. The lightning took the feeling from his legs and gave the senses of sight and hearing to his head.
D. The blow that caused him blind and deaf was very severe, so it took another severe blow to regain them.

Henry Ford, American car manufacturer, founded the Ford Car Company and produced Type T cars. He succeeded in making America a big car country.
Growing up on a far-away Michigan farm, Henry Ford knew little of farming -- but he soon showed signs that he belonged to a new generation of Americans interested more in the industrial future than in the agricultural past. His father, William, hoped that his eldest son would join him on the farm enable it to become larger, and at last, take it over. But Henry hated farm work and did everything he could to avoid it. It was not that he was lazy. Far from it. Give him a mechanical job to do and he would set to work eagerly. It was the daily life of the farm, with its repetitive tasks, that frustrated him. "What a waste it is," he wrote years later, remembering his work in the fields, "for a human being to spend hours and days behind a slowly moving team of horses."
So Henry turned his attention elsewhere. When he was twelve, he became very interested in clocks and watches. Soon he was repairing clocks and watches for friends, working at a bench he built in his bedroom. In 1876, Henry left the farm, and three years later, he took a job as a mechanic in Detroit. By this time steam engines had joined clocks and watches as objects of Henry's fascination.
According to Henry himself, he first saw a steam-driven road engine one day in 1877 when he and his father, in their horse-drawn farm wagon, met one on the road. The engine driver stopped to let the wagon pass, and Henry jumped down and went to him with many technical questions about the engine's performance. From then on, for a while, Henry became fascinated with steam engines.
A chance meeting with an old co-worker led to a job for Henry as an engineer at the Edison
Detroit Electricity Company, the leading force in another new industry. Power stations were being built and cables being laid in all of the United States' major cities; the age of electricity had begun. But although Henry quickly learned the rules for his new job -- so quickly that within four years he was the chief engineer at the Detroit power plant -- his interest in fuel engines had control of his life. At first in the kitchen, and later in a shed at the back of his house, he spent his spare time in the evenings trying to build an engine to his own design.
Henry learned it was a slow, hard business to build an engine by hand. Every piece of every part had to be made separately, checked and rechecked, and tested. Every problem had to be worried over and solved by the builder. To ease the burden, Henry joined forces with another
mechanic, Jim Bishop. Even so, it was two years before they had succeeded in building a working car. It was a simple one, fixed on bicycle wheels and driven by a rubber belt that connected the engine to the back wheels. Henry called it the "Quadricycle".

CBC is a famous air company which has over twenty planes carrying passengers and goods, flying along 12 fixed lines all over the world. Its service is very good but some passengers are still not satisfied with it and that is why in 2003 and 2004 the company received letters of complaints from consumers or passengers who pointed out over a dozen kinds of problems which are divided in groups in the following table. Those about passengers' things carried by the plane are Baggage problems. Customer service refers to service work which passengers are not satisfied with. Refund problems appear when passengers fail to receive the money paid back to them because of what they have lost. Fares are problems about the price of tickets.

The Cave of Lascaux
It was Thursday, September 12,1940. Four French teens were out exploring in the woods off the northern slopes of the Pyrenees. Many years before, an old pine tree fell and left a large hole in the ground. The teenagers were curious and they started to explore the area and fell into one of the most important archeological finds of the twentieth century!
There are over a hundred limestone caves in this region of France. Some were inhabited by humans thousands and thousands of years ago. Between 15,000-17,000 years ago, humans painted lively creatures such as cows, bulls, horses, and even cats on the walls of the cave.
Why did they mark these walls? Was it to tell a story? Was it to record a famous battle? There are many mysteries and ancient secrets still waiting to be discovered in the cave of Lascaux. There were dots in many of the paintings. What do these dots mean? Were they meant to record time, a calendar? Deep in the cave, there is a drawing of a "birdman’’, What does this mean? Was it a place for sacred ceremonies? No one knows for sure.
The actual cave of Lascaux was closed in 1963 due to the over-abundance of tourists visiting the site. The carbon monoxide that people were breathing out was causing damage to the fragile cave paintings. Up till now the Lascauz cave is still closed for tourists. Only a specialist can visit the cave by a special order that must be made out almost a year in advance. Not more than six persons can enter the cave per day. Two days a week, the cave is completely closed. Due to the great interest of numerous tourists, in 1983 Lascaux II was opened for tourism. It is an exact replica of the cave of Lascaux,

With the development of computer technology, the Internet has become more and more popular. Some students regard it as a great helper. Since there is a lot of information on line, you can surf the Internet for any information you need in a short time without working hard in the library. It is also very convenient to communicate with others by using the Internet. However, other students think that there is some information on line that is not good for the students. In addition, spending too much time playing games on line will not only have a bad effect on study but also do harm to our health. Therefore, we should make proper use of the Internet. It is of great importance for us to separate good plants from wild weeds.

阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项。

Let Them Watch It
One hot night, when our new baby wouldn’t sleep, I tried everything I could think of : a warm bottle, songs, gentle rocking. Nothing would settle him. Guessing that I had a long night ahead of me, I brought a portable (手提的) TV into his room, figuring that watching the late movie was as good a way as any to kill off the hours until dawn. To my surprise, as soon as the TV lit up, the baby quieted right down, his little eyes focused brightly on the screen. Not to waste an opportunity for sleep, I then tiptoed out of the room, leaving him to watch the actors celebrate John Bellushi’s forty-fifth birthday.
My wife and I heard no more of the baby that night, and the next morning when I went into his room, I found him still watching TV himself.
I found in my baby’s behavior a metaphor(暗喻) for the new generation. My wife and I had given him some books to examine, but he merely spit upon them. When we read to him, he did not feel comfortable. And so it is in the schools. We find that our students don’t read and they look down upon reading and scold those of us who teach it. All they want to do is watching TV. After this experience with the baby, however, I have reached a conclusion: “Let them watch it! If television is much more attractive to children than books, why should we fight it? Let them watch all they want!”
56. Why did the author bring a TV set into his son’s room?
A. To make his son stop crying.
B. To spend the night by watching TV programs.
C. To leave it to his son.
D. To make his son go to sleep as soon as possible.
57. The baby’s reaction(反应) to the TV program was __________.
A. unexpected B. excited C. terrible D. calm
58. From the passage we know that the author is _________.
A. a doctor B. an editor C. a writer D. a teacher
59. According to the passage, which is true of the school children?
They prefer reading to watching TV.
They like watching TV only after school.
They would rather watch TV than read books.

Look closely at the palms of your hands and fingertips. See all the tiny lines? Each of us is born with a unique set of prints, but it may surprise you to learn why we have them. Palm-lines are not for fortune-tellers to figure out how long we will live, nor are fingerprints there to make a policeman’s job easier. In fact, the lines and loops that decorate our hands and feet are an evolutionary gift from nature, and they serve two important functions.
Our prints are made of raised and lowered skin. The raised areas fun_ction somewhat like the tread(纹) of car tires or the rubber soles of our running shoes. When we touch something that is wet, water moves from these “hills” into the “valleys’, which means some surfaces on our skin remain relatively dry. This is useful, for it allows us to better grip the things we want to hold.
Our prints help us hold on, but they also have a secondary fun_ction: protection. The raised areas serve as buffers(缓冲物) between our skin and an object, keeping us from getting hurt every time we grip the hard surface of a bottle or a baseball bat. This is the same reason why, when we walk too far or wear uncomfortable shoes, we get blisters on the soft skin of our ankles, but never on our heels, like our palms and fingers, have prints to protect them.
It is the random(任意的) flow of fluids inside our mothers wombs that causes these useful patterns to form on the surface of our hands and feet. Because they are formed randomly, each person’s prints are unique, which makes prints accidentally useful as a means of distinguishing between people. Even identical twins have different prints, which means that no mistake can be made in determining who did a crime, provided fingerprints or toe prints were left at the scene.
68. Where can’t you find the tiny lines?
A. Palms. B. Fingerprints. C. Heels. D. Ankles.
69. Which of the following is NOT mentioned in the passage?

A. Why Do We Have Prints B. The Formation of Prints

Like fine food, good writing is something we approach with pleasure and enjoy from the first taste to the last. And good writers, like good cooks, do not suddenly appear full-blown(充分发展的). Quite the opposite, just as the cook has to undergo a particular training, mastering the skills of his trade, the writer must sit at his desk and devote long hours to achieving a style in his writing, whatever its purpose is schoolwork, matters of business, or purely social communication. You may be sure that the more painstaking the effort, the more effective the writing is, and the more rewarding.
There are still some faraway places in the world where you might find a public scribe(抄写员) to do your business or social writing for you, for money. There are a few managers who are lucky enough to have the service of that rare kind of secretary who can take care of all sorts of letters writing with no more than a quick note to work from. But for most of us, if there is any writing to be done, we have to do it ourselves.
We have to write school papers, business papers or home papers. We are constantly called on to put words to papers. I would be difficult to count the number of such words, messages, letters, and reports put into mails or delivered by hand, but the daily figures must be extremely large. What is more, everyone who writes expects , or at least hopes whatever he writes will be read, from first word to last, not just thrown into letter-to-be-read files or into a wastepaper basket. This is the reason we bend our efforts toward learning and practicing the skills of interesting, effective writing.
72. In this message, good writing is compared to fine food because ______________.
A. both are enjoyable B. both are hard to learn
C. both are necessary to life D. both take a long time to prepare
73. According to the passage, which of the following statements is TRUE?
Writing skills are less important than experience.
A good writer should have his own way of writing.
A good writer should learn to write all kinds of articles.
The more efforts one makes, the more money one can earn.
74. The author thinks that the most important reason for us to practice writing skills is _________.
A. to earn our living B. to attract others to read
C. to do daily reports easily D. to become good secretaries
75. The purpose of the author in writing this passage is to ____________.
A. comment and blame B. introduce and describe
C. explain and persuade D. interest and inform

Dear editor,
I’m writing to tell you about the arguments on whether students of Senior Three should go in for sports or not.
More than half of the students think we should exercise every day because health is the most important. You can do nothing without it. Sports and exercise can make us strong and energetic.
On the other hand, 45% of us believe it a waste of time to take exercise. Also, it’s very tiring. After having sports, we are too excited to get down to our study. We may even get hurt in sports.
And I think it’s true that we should devote ourselves to the lessons, but sports make our brains relaxed and enable us to have a sound sleep every night. The efficiency of revision will surely be improved.
Best wishes.
Yours,
Li Hua
