History is a society's memory and forms part of people's identity. But Taiwan's government has proposed a change to their history. In the move their textbooks will separate the island's history from the rest of China.
By disconnecting the island's history from the mainland, the government hopes to create a stronger Taiwan identity.
Under new guidelines (方针) to be carried out in 2006, Taiwan has ordered high schools to change textbooks to create one book of Taiwan's history. At the moment their books cover the complete Chinese history. But following the new move Chinese history will be taught as part of international history. No longer to be included as part of Taiwan's history is the founding of the Republic Of China (ROC) in 1911 by Sun Yatsen. This event will be in the new international history book.
"It is a political attempt by Taiwan's leader Chen Shuibian to make their education support Taiwan’s independence, " said Li Weiyi, spokesman for the Taiwan Affice office of the State Council.
This move has also received great opposition in Taiwan’s schools. "The new outline (大纲) is too political and facts have been changed," said Yu Lin, the headmaster of Tai pei Middle School, "It will confuse students" understanding of history. "
"Who on earth should I think is the founding father of the ROC?" asked a student in Taipei. "many famous people in history like Confucius (孔子) or Sun Yat-sen, who was considered “father of the ROC” for more than half a century, should now be thought of as foreigners based upon this ridiculous logic," he said.
Many people have shown opposition to the move. "History cannot be changed. Mixing politics with our history means forgetting our ancestors," said Leien Chan, chairman of Kuomintang Party. "It will not do any good to the Taiwanese and only worsen cross - Straits relations, "

No one gets through life without experiencing many disappointments. Strangely, though, most people seem unprepared for disappointment and react to it in negative ways. They feel depressed (消沉的)or try to escape from their troubles instead of using disappointment as an opportunity for growth.
One negative reaction to disappointment is depression. A woman trying to win a promotion, for example, works hard for over a year in her department. Helen is so sure she will get the promotion. In fact, she has already picked out the car she will buy when her salary increase comes through. However, the boss names one of Helen's co-workers for the spot. Deeply depressed, Helen loses her enthusiasm for her job and can barely force herself to show up every day. Helen tells herself that she is a failure and that doing a good job just isn't worth the work.
Another negative reaction to disappointment, and one that follows depression, is the desire to escape. Kevin fails to get into the college his brother is attending, the college that was the focus of all his dreams, and decides to escape his disappointment. Why worry about college at all? Instead, he covers up his real feelings by giving up on his school-work and getting completely involved with friends, parties, and "good times".
The positive way to react to disappointment is to use it as a chance for growth. This isn’t easy, but it's the only useful way to deal with an inevitable(不可避免的) part of life. Helen, the woman who was not promoted, could have handled her disappointment by looking at other options. If her boss did not recognize her talent and hard work, perhaps she could transfer to another department. Or she could ask the boss how to improve her performance so that she could prepare for the next promotion. Kevin, the boy who didn't get into the college of his choice, should look into other schools. Going to another college may encourage him to be his own person, step out of his brother's shadow, and realize that being turned down by one college isn't a final judgment on his abilities or potential.
Disappointments are unwelcome, but regular visitors to everyone's life. We can feel de-
pressed about them or we can try to escape from them. The best thing, though, is to accept a disappointment and then try to use it somehow: Step over the unwelcome visitor on the doorstep and get on with life.
60. In this passage, the author _________.
A. analyzes the cause of disappointment.
B. describes his personal experience in dealing with disappointment.
C. criticizes Helen and Kevin's negative responses to disappointment.
D, offers specific examples of the ways people deal with disappointment.
61. When Kevin fails to get into his dream college,
A. he stops daydream. B. he stops following the example of his brother.
C. he stops working hard. D. he stops living a dull life.

B. stand the pressure and competition
C. win a good opinion from the boss by seeking his advice

I know a woman who likes to do grocery shopping, but I also know a lot of people who hate it ! People who hate shopping are likely to like supermarkets, those huge stores where almost everything you need in one location.
The supermarket saves me both money and time. The little corner grocery store is often more conveniently located, more pleasant and open at late hours when the supermarket is closed. But the grocer must charge you more than the big market for most items because he can only buy a small number of cases of one product from the manufacturer, while a supermarket chain can buy thousands of cases at a time; thus the supermarket can buy cheaper and can sell cheaper to you.
Nevertheless, food is very far from cheap so I always bunt for bargains. I check ads in the newspapers and the market's "sale" flyers and try to make up a shopping list that includes "sale" items.
When I enter a supermarket I take a big, wheeled basket and roll it around from side to side. Fresh and frozen foods, canned goods, boxes, bags and bottles soon fill up my cart. I also buy many non-food items such as paper napkins, plastic wraps (to keep food fresh under refrigeration), laundry detergent, light bulbs, etc.. Some foods that have already been cooked (like chicken) or prepared(like salads) are available in the "delicatessen"(熟食店) section of the market. But they are often too expensive for my food budget.
There is one big danger in supermarket shopping: There are thousands of items within hand 's reach on the shelves, all attractively packaged. The temptation to buy things you do not really need or want is very strong! Don't be fooled by the pictures on the boxes; for example, a box with a picture of a beautiful cake on it may only contain a cake mix. Read the labels.
When I've loaded up my basket and checked my shopping list again to make sure I have everything I need, I go to a check. Here a cashier (or a computer) will look at the price marked on every item I buy, ring it up on the cash register, add sales tax where appropriate, and then total up the bill. The register will show me the amount I must pay. I groan at how high the prices are and complain about inflation, and hand my money to the cashier. While the groceries are being bagged, I count my change and then head home.
Sometimes, of course, the market is very crowded and there are long lines at check-out counter. But even so, in much less time than it would have taken me to go from one small shop or grocery store to another, I've done the family's major shopping for a week or two or even more.
68. It can be inferred from the passage that a lot of people hate shopping because ________.
A. it will take people a lot of time to go from one shop or grocery store to another.
B. the shops are often very crowded.
C. it will cost them a lot of money. D. they have to hunt for bargains.
69. Which of the following statements about supermarket shopping is NOT true?
A. One tends to buy unnecessary goods. B. One can save both money and time.
C. It will take the place of grocery shopping. D. It is preferred by people hating shopping.
70. Why does the author say the supermarket saves his/her time?
A. He/She can do the family's major shopping for a week or two or even more in one location.
B. He/She needn't wait to pay at the check--out counter.
C. He/She needn't go from one shop or grocery store to another.
D. Both A and C.
71. What is the main idea of the passage?
A. People hating shopping are likely to like supermarkets.
B. The author intends to give a brief introduction of supermarket shopping.
C. Supermarket shopping saves people both money and time.
D. The author expresses his/her preference for supermarket shopping.

The biochemistry of hibernation (冬眠) may help save human lives. During the long cold winter many of us struggle to keep warm while we wait for the warmth of spring. But there are some animals going into a deep sleep during winter. When an animal is hibernating in this way, its body temperature fails to nearly freezing. The organs of the animal's body almost stop working. The heart beats only a few times a minute. For example, the ground squirrel's heartbeat during hibernation slows from its normal 350 beats each minute to only 3 or 4. Hibernating animals can lose as much as one half of their body weight during the sleep, and the body's need for food is sharply reduced. No hibernating animal sleeps all winter without waking from time to time. Hibernating squirrels awaken about 15 days. Bats awaken every 30-40 days. Scientists believe that these periods of waking and sleeping are controlled by a substance in the blood called HIT hibernation inducing trigger. Scientists have found that by putting small amounts of this substance in to the brain of an animal, the animal's heartbeat begins to slow and the body temperature begins to fall. This was true even for animals that not to hibernate, such as monkeys. When HIT was put into a monkey's brain.its heartbeat slowed as much as 50%. The body temperature fell several degrees.and its interest in food disappeared.Doctors believe that HIT,when it is better understood.might be used during operations 0n the heart or other parts of the body.It could reduce the body’s temperature and slow the heartbeat to reduce bleeding. The effect of HIT on a person’s interest in food also might be used in helping those who want to lose weight. And HIT might be able t0 hibernate for most of the trip, waking only when necessary.
72. During hibernation the ground squirrels heartbeat _______.
A.falls several times. B.slows from 350 to 120 beats a minute.
C.goes up from 3 of 4 to 350 heats a minute,
D.reduces from its normal 350 to 3 or 4 beats a minute.
73. During the winter sleep, hibernating animals can lose _______of their body weight.
A.1/2 B.1/3 C.2/3 D.1/4
74. What effect does the substance HIT have on hibernating animals?
A.It has a chemical effect on them. B.It has a had effect on them
C.It has an effect on the rising of their body temperature.
D.It can control the periods of their waking and sleeping
75. Doctors believe that HIT might be used during operations because _________.
A.it could make the patient sleep.
B.it could reduce the body’s temperature and heartbeats to reduce bleeding.
C.it could make the sick feel less pain. D.it could keep the sick awake during the operation.

Value Your Life
It is reported that some young people lose their faith in life even choose to give up their lives when they face frustrations. Here, I want to express nay opinions about this phenomenon.
Life is so precious that no one can have a second time. Therefore, we are expected to have a positive attitude and value our lives at any time. Difficulty is never too powerful to solve. In my opinion, we should be brave enough to face it whatever difficulty we have to meet with in our life. When facing frustrations, we may as well talk with our family or friends. They can give us some good advice. Besides, many people have devoted their efforts to us during the course of our growth. We should work hard and enjoy our life so that we can serve the society better in the future.
