辨析:probable/ possible/ likely
1) 三个词均表示“可能的”,但likely和probable所表示的可能性大,possible表示的可能性小。
2) 三个词均可用于It is … that… 结构。
It is likely/probable that…
It is possible that … = It is possible for sb. to do sth.
3) 只有likely 可以用人做主语。
4) possible 和likely后可接不定式,而probable不与不定式连用。
They are likely to win.(此处不能用possible)

4. distance n. 距离

Ⅳ. Sentence patterns
1. When attacking in this way, the shark waits for you to swim by and attacks you suddenly.
when/ while 引导的时间状语从句中的主语,如果与主句中的主语相同,常用“ when/ while + -ing 短语或过去分词短语”的结构来代替。

Rome-Doctors and medical groups around the world last weekend reacted with strong opposition to the news that an Italian specialist is on the brink of cloning the first human baby .
Dr. Severino Antinori, who is the head of a hospital in Rome, has been referred to in an Arab newspaper as claiming that one of his patients is eight weeks pregnant (怀孕) with a cloned baby.
Antinori refused to comment on the reports , but in March 2001 he said he hoped to produce a cloned embryo(卵)implantation within two years . So far seven different kinds of mammals have already successfully cloned, including sheep, cats, and most recently rabbits.
Doctors showed their doubt and were strongly opposed although they admitted that human cloning would finally come true unless there was a worldwide ban on the practice.
Professor Rudolf Jaeniscb of the Whitehead Institute for Biomedical Research at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology said , “I find it astonishing that people do this where the result can be foretold that it will not be a normal baby . It is using humans as guinea pigs. It makes people feel sick.”
But Ronald Green, director of the Ethics Institute at Darmouth College in the US, said it is unlikely that an eight-week-old pregnancy would lead to a birth .
So far all cloned animals have suffered from some different serious disorder, many of them dying soon after their births.
Doctors are opposed to human cloning because they are worried about the welfare of the cloned child if there is one.
“There are no benefits of cloned human beings, just harm, ”said Dr. Michael Wilks of the UK .

4. beat-beat-beaten 跳动
beat, hit, strike, tap 四者都可以表示“打”,但各有侧重。
beat着重“连续不断地打”,也指在游戏、竞赛或战争中击败对方。
strike通常表示“打一下,打若干下”等,还可指“罢工,(钟)敲响”之意。
hit指“打中,对准……来打”,着重敲打或打击对方的某一点。
tap一般指轻轻拍打的意思。

IV. Grammar
名词性从句相当于名词, 可分别作主句的主语, 宾语, 表语和同位语,即主语从句, 宾语从句, 表语从句和同位语从句。 其引导词有: that, if, whether, who, what, which, when, where, how, why ,whose 等。 连词that无意义, 在从句中不担任成份,有时可省略; whether/if虽有词义, 但在从句中也不担任成份。
(一). 主语从句: 即从句作主句的主语。
1. 引导主语从句的词有: that, whether, what, who, which, when, where, how, why.
. Where we can buy this type of computer remains a problem.
That the earth turns around the sun is known to all.
2. it 做形式主语。
It is a question whether he will be able to pass the driving test.
(Whether he will be able to pass the driving test is a question.)
注意: 在下列结构中主语从句不可位于句首。
1. It is said /reported that…
It is said that President Jiang will visit our school next week.(T/F)
That President Jiang will visit our school next week is said.(T/F)
2. It happens /occurs that…
It occurred to him that he failed in the examination.(T/F)
That he failed in the examination occurred to him.(T/F)
3. It doesn’t matter how /whether…
It doesn’t matter whether he is wrong or not. (T/F)
Whether he is wrong or not doesn’t matter.(T/F)
4. 含主语从句的复合是疑问句时, 主语从句不可提前。
Is it likely that it will rain in the evening (T/F)
Is that it will rain in the evening likely (T/F)
(二). 宾语从句: 即从句在句中作及物动词或介词的宾语。
1. 引导宾语从句的词有: that, whether, if, who, whose, what, which, when, where, how, why等。
I wonder whether / if my parents will buy me a birthday present.
We are talking about whose handwriting is the best.
2. it 做形式宾语。
We all thought it good news that the fog had finally gone.
The conductor has made it clear that no buses will be running.
(三). 表语从句: 即从句在句中作表语, 位于主句中的系动词之后。
引导表语从句的词有: that, whether, as if, what, who, which, when, where, how, why等。
The fact is that we are strangers here.
The problem is how we can get so many computers for each of us.
(四). 同位语从句: .在复合句中用作同位语的从句叫同位语从句. 它一般跟在某些名词后面, 用以说明该名词表示的具体内容。
1. 引导同位语从句的词有: that, whether, how, when, where等。
I have no idea whether he has arrived at the airport.
There is still possibility that our team may defeat theirs.
2. 可以跟同位语从句的名词通常有: news / word, idea, fact, promise, question, doubt, thought, hope, message, suggestion, possibility等.
(五). 注意that引导的名词性从句。
1. that通常用来引导一个陈述句。
The young man admitted that he had once been a thief.
2. 在介词后面不用that来引导名词性从句, 但是可以用在in或except后面。
I didn’t tell him anything _except_____ that I wasn’t able to find my way back.
The problem lies ___in____ that the mist may become a thick fog.
3. that引导主语从句, 不可以省略。

(六). 用if或whether引导的从句要注意以下几点:
1. 在介词后只能用whether, 不能用if.

(七). that或if / whether引导两个或两个以上由and或but连接的名词性从句时, 在and或but后面还要有that或if /whether。
