2 Preposition + which / whom
a We use a preposition to begin an attributive clause when the relative pronoun (which / whom) is the object of the preposition.
1) We could expect good decision from you. We thought you were such a person.
We thought you were a person _______ _______ we could expect good decision.
2) You were to buy dog food with the money. The money is gone.
The money _______ _______ you were to buy dog food is gone.
3) The Maths teacher is the person. I got an A plus from him.
The Maths teacher is the person _______ _______ I got an A plus.
4) Art is the subject. I know little about it.
Art is the subject _______ _______ I know little.
b If the preposition is at the end of the attributive clause, whom / which can be replaced
by that, and whom can also be replaced by who. Meanwhile, we can even leave them out.
1) Dad is a person (_______ / _______ / _______) I can easily talk to.
2) Is this the play (_______ / _______) you were talking about just now.
c When the antecedent is way, we use in which / that to begin the clause, or simply
leave them out.
1) I didn’t like the way (that / in which) she talked to me.
2) The way (that / in which) he teaches English is interesting.
3 Relative adverbs:
When: begin attributive clauses after time, moment, day, season, year, etc. It can also be replaced by Preposition + which.
Where: begin attributive clauses after place, house, city, country, world, etc. It can also be replaced by Preposition + which.
Why: begin attributive clauses after reason. It can be replaced by for which.
4 Non-restrictive attributive clauses: adding extra information to the main clause, often a comma before it.
1) which: referring to sth. or the whole main clause, cannot be replaced or left out.
Our school, ______ (which / that) has a long history, is now taking on a new look.
He failed the exam, ______ (which / that) made his parents unhappy.
2) “all / some of + which / whom” to express a complete or partial quantity. (SB p.48)
3) as: “正如、就像”, 引导定从时可置于句首、句中或句末。

As is known to all, China is a country with the largest population.
