Reading教案
Teaching aims
1. Enable the students to learn English spoken around the world.
2. Improve the reading ability of the students, especially the skills of summarizing, word guessing and scanning.
3. Encourage the students to think and talk in English through communicative talks and provide the students with chances of cooperation.
4. Make sure that the students realize the importance of learning English and love towards our own country.

Step 1 Revision
In the last period, we have learned something about the differences between British English and American English. Ok! Now, who can tell me the differences between them Then ask another student to give some examples. Today, we will still learn something about English.
Step 2 Lead-in
Now. I will show you some pictures or flags, please think over what does each of them stand for. Then allow the students to show their opinions. Now, please think it over again, “Is there any relation between them ” Allow the students to show their own opinions. The answer is that English is the mother tongue in these countries.
1. Present the students with several other pictures. Then ask one students to tell us the names of these countries. Then ask: “is English spoken in these countries What situations are English used in these countries ” Give the students several minutes to discuss these two questions with their partners. Then ask the students to show their own opinions. English is used as an official language in these countries, which is spoken on formal occasions like governing, schooling and news reporting.
2. Now, please look at this map, I think everyone knows it. It is a map of …and everyone knows that English is used as… Do you know some other countries like China Ok, I’ll tell you, Japan, France and so on.
So although English doesn’t have the most speakers in the world, it is the most popular language all around the world.
Today, We ‘re going to read a passage entitled with “English Around the World”.
Step 3 Reading
1. Skimming
Ask the students to read through the passage and summarize the main idea of each paragraph.
Par. 1. English is learned as a native language in some countries.
Native language:(mother tongue) English is as a first language; it is the language that one or both your parents speak. (EL1)
Par.2. English is learned as a second language
Second language: (ESL); it is the language that has official status in your countries and is used by government and media beside one or more other indigenous languages.
Pra.3. English is used as a foreign language in some countries.
Foreign language: (EFL); the language has no official status in the country other than being learnt as a school subject.
Pra.4.The importance of learning English nowadays
2. Careful reading
Get the students to read the passage carefully again and meanwhile try to guess the meaning of the following words or phrases: majority, mother tongue, equal, trade, tourism, communicate.
Majority: a number of people or things that form more than half of a group
Mother tongue: native language
Equal: the same
Trade: the activity of buying, selling or exchanging goods of services
Tourism: business of providing services for the tourists
3. After reading
Allow the students to discuss the meaning of the new word with their partners. Then ask some students to explain the words. The teacher can give some information or some further explanations if necessary.
4. Do the exercises on page 11 (Ex.2.)
5. Allow the students to discuss the questions on page 11 and ask each other questions on the passage.
Step 4 Discussions
1. After reading the passage, we learned so much about English spoken around the world. Do you think it is necessary to have a good knowledge of English Why do you think so Please form groups of four and discuss these questions with your partners.
2. Give the students chances to express their opinions freely. If time is limited, just ask several representatives.
3. Summary by the teacher
Through learning this passage, we have got to know that English is becoming more and more popular all over the world now. So English learning seems important to everyone, especially for us students of the 21st century. With China’s entry into WTO and the host of 2008 Olympic games, English will play a more and more important part in business, tourism and even in people’s daily life. So it’s no doubt that everyone should have a good knowledge of English. And I hope everyone in our class can make a great effort to learn English well. But on the other hand, it doesn’t mean that English is better than Chinese. We must keep in mind that one’s mother tongue is the most beautiful language in the world. The reason why we learn English is that we should be more capable of building up our own country.
4. Finish the exercise –word study on page 11 as consolidation.
Step 5 Summary
1. Summarize what has been learned during this course.
2. According to the following topic, write a composition.
The text describes the growing importance of English over the past fifty years. Then please predict the development of e.g. English, Chinese, Spanish, French and some other languages. Which language will become more important and influenced Why
