Every day we go to school and listen to the teacher, and the teacher will ask us some questions. Sometimes, the classmates will ask your opinions of the work of the class. When you are telling others in class what you have found out about these topics, remember that they must be able to hear what you are saying. You are not taking part in a family conversation or having a chat with friends—you are in a slightly unnatural situation where a large group of people will remain silent, waiting to hear what you have to say. You must speak loudly enough and clearly enough so that they can hear you but don’t try to shout or force yourself.
Remember, too, that it is the same if you are called to an interview whether it is with a professor of your school or a government official (官员) who might meet you. The person you are seeing will try to put you at your ease but the situation is somewhat different from that of an ordinary conversation. You must take special care that you can be heard.
56. Usually, when you speak to the class, the class are _______.
A. noisy B. quiet C. nervous D. confident
57. Which of the following situations is not unnatural?
A. Answering questions in class. B. Chatting with friends.

A. to show your ability B. to be very gentle
C. to make sure that you can be heard D. to put the official at ease
59. The main idea of this passage is ______.
A. that we should talk in different ways in different situations

When I was small and my grandmother died, I couldn’t understand why I had no tears. But that night when my dad tried to cheer me up, suddenly I began to cry.
So it came as no surprise to learn that researchers believe crying and laughing come from the same part of the brain. Just as laughing has many health advantages, scientists are discovering that so does crying.
Whatever it takes for us to reduce pressure is important to our emotional (情感的) health, and crying seems to work well. One study found that 85 percent of women and 73 percent of men report feeling better after crying.
Besides, tears draw help from other people. Researchers agree that when we cry, people around us become kinder and friendly and they are more ready to provide support and comfort. Tears also enable us to understand our emotions better; sometimes we don’t even know we’re very sad until we cry. We learn about our emotions through crying, and then we can deal with them.
Just as crying can be healthy, not crying—holding back tears of anger, pain or suffering—can be bad for physical health. Studies have shown that too much control of emotions can lead to high blood pressure, heart problems and some other illnesses. If you have a health problem, doctors will certainly not ask you to cry. But when you feel like crying, don’t fight it. It’s a natural—and healthy—emotional response (反应).
60. The underlined part “cheer me up” in paragraph 1 means _______.
A. give me courage B. give me support
C. make me happier D. make me less happy

A. Crying is the best way to get help from others.
B. Fighting back tears may cause some health problems.

D. We must cry if we want to reduce pressure.
63. What might be the most suitable title for the text?
A. Power of Tears B. How to Keep Healthy
C. Why We Cry D. A New Scientific Discovery

Parents should stop blaming (责备) themselves because there’s not a lot they can do about it. I mean the teenager problem. Whatever you do or however you choose to deal with it, at certain times a wonderful, reasonable and helpful child will turn into a terrible animal.
I’ve seen friends deal with it in all kinds of different ways. One strict mother insisted that her son, right from a child, should stand up whenever anyone entered the room, open doors and shake hands like a gentleman. I saw him last week when I called round. Sprawling (懒散地躺) himself on the sofa at full length, he made no attempt to turn off the loud TV he was watching as I walked in, and his greeting was no more than a quick glance at me. His mother was ashamed. “I don’t know what to do with him these days,” she said. “He’s forgotten all the manners we taught him.”
He hasn’t forgotten them. He’s just decided that he’s not going to use them. She admitted that she would like to come up behind him and throw him down from the sofa onto the floor.
Another good friend of mine let her two daughters climb all over the furniture, reach across the table, stare at me and say, “I don’t like your dress; it’s ugly.” One of the daughters has recently been driven out of school. The other has left home.
“Where did we go wrong?” her parents are now very sad. Probably nowhere much.
64. This text is most probably written by ______.
A. a researcher of teenager problems B. a headmaster of a middle school
C. a parent with teenagers D. a doctor for heart diseases
65. The boy on the sofa would most probably be described as ______.
A. lazy B. quiet C. reasonable D. rude
66. From the second example we can infer that the parents of the two daughters ______.
A. pay no attention to them B. feel helpless to do much about them
C. have come to hate them D. are too busy to look after them
67. What is the author’s opinion about the sudden change in teenagers?
A. Parents have no choice but to try to accept the change.
B. Parents should pay still more attention to the change.
C. Parents should work more closely with school teachers.
D. Parents are responsible for the change in their children.

One evening after dinner, Mr. and Mrs. William called a family meeting. “We’ve had to make a difficult decision,” Mr. William announced. “You see, your mother has been offered a position as co-director of a television in Chicago. Unluckily, the station is not here. After thinking long and hard about it, we’ve decided to move to Chicago.”
Peter looked shocked, while his sister Amy breathlessly started asking when they’d be moving. “It’s surprising, but exciting!” she said. Peter simply said, “We can’t go—I can’t leave all my friends. I’d rather stay here and live with Tommy!”
Mr. and Mrs. William hoped that by the time they moved in August, Peter would grow more used to the idea of leaving. However, he showed no signs of accepting the news, refusing to pack his belongings(物品).
When the morning of the move arrived, Peter was nowhere to be found. His parents called Tommy’s house, but Tommy’s mother said she hadn’t seen Peter. Mrs. William became increasingly worried, while her husband felt angry with their son for behaving so irresponsibly (不负责任).
What they didn’t know was that Peter had started walking over to Tommy’s house, hoping to hide in Tommy’s attic (阁楼) for a few days. But something happened on the way as Peter walked past all the familiar landscape of the neighborhood: the fence that he and his mother painted, the tree that he and his sister used to climb, the park where he and his father often took evening walks together. How much would these mean without his family, who make them special in the first place? Peter didn’t take the time to answer that question but instead hurried back to his house, wondering if there were any moving boxes of the right size to hold his record collection.
72. The conflict (冲突) in this story was caused by ________.

A. he did not want to be left behind
B. he realized his family was important to him
C. he hoped to reach an agreement with his parents
D. he wished to be a more responsible person
75. What would most probably happen next?
A. Peter would bring his records over to the Tommy’s house.
B. Mr. and Mrs. William would call the police.
C. Peter would join his family in moving to Chicago.
D. Mr. and Mrs. William would start searching for Peter.

Dear Tom,
I am writing to tell you about the e-mail survey we did in our school — Who you go to when you’re in trouble.
About 60 % of the students ask their classmates or friends for help because they are almost of the same age and they can understand each other better. Meanwhile, 30 % of the students share their troubles with their teachers or parents. The reason is that they have a lot of experience and they can be depended on. Besides them, only a few students (10 %), who find it difficult to get along well with others, deal with their problems by themselves.
In my opinion, once we get into trouble, we should turn to our parents or teachers for help.
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua
