Doctors tell us not to smoke, but a lot of people smoke tobacco every day. Long ago, no one in Europe smoked; the tobacco plant was unknown there. It grew in America, and Christopher Columbus found it there. Later, he returned to Europe and told everyone about tobacco. He said that the American Indians often smoked it. Sir Walter Raleigh was a famous man in the days of Queen ElizabethⅠ. He traveled widely and learnt to smoke. Then he returned to England, but he did not stop smoking. He used to smoke two pieces every day secretly in his room. When someone came in, he quickly hid his pipe; but one day, he was not quick enough. A man came in and found clouds of smoke in the room. More smoke was coming from Raleigh’s mouth, so the man got some water and threw it over Raleigh. He believed that Raleigh was burning. He ran out of the house and told everybody about it. After this, smoking was not a secret. Raleigh told Queen Elizabeth I about it. He added that he could weigh his smoke. She did not believe this, and she asked him to explain.
“First,” he said, “I shall weigh the tobacco. Then I shall put it in my pipe and smoke it, then I shall weigh the ashes which remain. I can take them out of the pipe and weigh them on a balance. There will be a great difference between the two weights. The tobacco must be heavier than the ashes. The difference between them must be the weight of the smoke.
It was a good explanation, but Raleigh was wrong. When his tobacco burned, it did this, but the oxygen was not in the tobacco at the beginning. It was added when Raleigh smoked his pipe. So the smoke was heavier than the difference between the two weights. The weight of the oxygen was added.

Ancient Egyptian is the second oldest recorded language. The first hieroglyphs(象形文字) can be dated back to approximately 3100 BC while the latest are almost three and a half thousand years later. A small number of Ancient Egyptian words have even found their way into the modern English vocabulary.
Hieroglyphic writing was a highly developed system by which everything could be expressed. Hieroglyphs can be read from right to left, from left to right and also vertically from top to bottom, according to the composition of the picture. A hieroglyphic inscription was traditionally arranged in columns. Later it was written in horizontal lines and the heads of the signs were always turned towards the beginning of the sentence. The sequence is continuous, without punctuation marks or spaces to indicate divisions between words.
There are over 6,000 documented hieroglyphs. However, in general, about 700 were in standard use at any time. Egyptologists (埃及古物学者) have identified 24 hieroglyphic signs, each representing a consonant, which loosely correspond to the sounds of our modern alphabet. There were no vowels used in hieroglyphic writing so they use the vowels “a” and “e” where necessary to communicate the language verbally but the words would not have sounded the same way in ancient times.
Hieroglyphs are usually associated with stone inscriptions and the word itself comes from a Greek phrase meaning “the sacred carved letters.” The signs of the script are largely pictorial (用图片表示的) in nature and most of them are recognizable pictures of natural or man-
made objects. Some people claim that the best hieroglyphs have a beauty of line and color, which makes them the most elegant writing ever designed.

Forget counting sheep. Next time you are having trouble going to sleep, try putting on a jazz CD.
Researchers have shown just 45 minutes of relaxing music before bedtime can make for a restful night.
The Taiwanese researchers studied the sleeping patterns of 60 elderly people with sleep problems. They told the Journal of Advanced Nursing how the technique was easy to learn and lacked the side effects of other treatments. The study participants were either given a choice of music to listen to before going to sleep or nothing at all. The music group were able to choose from six tapes that featured soft, slow music—around 60-80 beats per minute—such as jazz, folk or orchestral pieces.
Listening to music caused physical changes that aided restful sleep, including a lower heart and respiratory(呼吸的) rate, the researchers found.
The people in the music group reported a 35% improvement in their sleep, including better and longer night-time sleep and less dysfunction(机能障碍) during the day.
Lead author Professor Hui-Ling Lai, of the Buddhist Tzu-Chi General Hospital and the University of Taiwan, said, “The music group reported a 26% overall improvement in the first week and this figure continued to rise as they mastered the technique of relaxing into sedative(安神的) music.”
Professor Jim Horne, from the Sleep Research Centre at Loughborough University, said, “If anyone is a bit agitated before they go to bed, then anything that can help calm them down and relax is a good thing.”
“Some say making sure older people sleep less in the afternoon and get plenty of exposure to daylight can help them get a better night’s sleep.”
64. Listening to music before going to sleep _______.
A. is better than other treatments to help you sleep
B. can cure some diseases as well as sleeplessness
C. is a necessary step for the elder
D. can improve one’s taste for music

A few years ago, a pilot had to have perfect eyesight and a college degree if he or she wanted to land a job with an American airline. But today, airlines do not stick to those requirements because they can’t find enough qualified pilots.
Airlines must hire up to 62,000 new pilots in the next decade. But qualified pilots are few and far between in the United States. Every year there are more planes being flown. At the same time, 12 to 15 foreign countries are recruiting American pilots.
As a result, pilots are earning spectacular salaries. The going rate for skilled pilots is well over $90,000 a year. Some pilots can earn about $160,000 plus free housing working for foreign airlines.
Because of the shortage, some people say unqualified pilots are being allowed to fly planes. They fear the number of crashes will skyrocket. Each year, more and more pilots with less than 2,000 hours of experience are being hired. Airlines are also bringing on board many more pilots who are older than 50, although law requires pilots to retire at age 60.
Being an airline pilot is a difficult job that requires people to make life and death decisions under pressure. Some pilots crack under the pressure.
The military is also having a hard time keeping pilots. Air Force pilots must commit to spending at least six years in the Air Force. The Air Force invests millions of dollars to train each pilot, so it doesn’t want to lose them.
Experts say this problem is going to get a lot worse. Congress may establish a commission to study the country’s pilot needs. In the meantime, salaries of pilots will continue to rise and the number of crashes may keep pace.
72. The main idea of the article is that _______.
A. a shortage of pilots is caused by airlines and military
B. there have been more crashes because pilots have worse eyesight and higher salaries
C. a shortage of pilots may lead to more crashes
D. airlines should hire more pilots even if they’re unqualified
73. What does the underlined word “skyrocket (in Paragraph 4)” mean?
A. Increase greatly. B. Appear suddenly.
C. Happen rightly. D. Decrease suddenly.
74. Air Force pilots should stay in the Air Force because _______.
A. the Air Force is a good place to work in
B. the Air Force pays more than airlines
C. the military should have hard time keeping pilots
D. the Air Force spends a lot of money training them
75. Some people wouldn’t be good pilots if _______.
A. they can’t make decisions quickly
B. they don’t earn spectacular salaries
C. they weren’t recruited by foreign countries
D. the number of crashes keeps pace with them
