三、定语从句典型错误例析
1．主句结构错误
误：Is this factory which you visited last week?
正：Is this factory the one which you visited last week?
析：上例中 this factory 为主语而非先行词， 因此主句缺少表语the one, 即后面定语从句的先行词。
2．从句结构错误
1）误：The finger I dipped into the cup was not the one I put it into my mouth.
正：The finger I dipped into the cup was not the one I put into my mouth..
析：上例中，关系代词that/ which在定语从句中作宾语，已省去。后一定语从句中宾语it多余。
2）误：There are a lot of people plant trees there.
正：There are a lot of people who plant trees there..
析：上例中主句为： There are a lot of people, 先行词people在定语从句中作主语，故从句部分缺少关系代词。
3．从句中主谓不一致
误：You are the only one of the girls who dance well.
正：You are the only one of the girls who dances well..
析：定语从句部分的谓语形式必须与先行词在人称和数上保持一致。 上例中先行词the one为单数。另： You are the one of the girls who dances well. You are one of the girls who dance well. (先行词为the girls)
4．引导词错误
1）误：Mary was late for class again, that made the teacher angry.
正：Mary was late for class again, which made the teacher angry.
析：逗号之后不可用关系代词that引导定语从句。which引导非限制性定语从句修饰前面整个句子并在从句中作主语。
2）误：The workers, many of them are women, come back to the factory.
正：The workers, many of whom are women, come back to the factory.
析：介词或介词短语后的定语从句不用关系代词that。若修饰人时关系代词用whom;修饰物时关系代词用which。例如： The knife with which he cut the branch is sharp; The boy about whom we just talked is Tom. 可见上例中定语从句缺少关系代词。
3）误：I won’t forget the time when I spent in the countryside..
正：I won’t forget the time I spent in the countryside...
析：先行词the time在从句中作动词spend的宾语，而非时间状语， 因此关系代词不能用when， 可用which 或that(可省略)。此类动词还有remember, forget, take等。
4）误：All what he said is true.
正：All he said is true.
析：先行词为all时，其后的定语从句用that引导， 作宾语时可省略， 此句相当于含主语从句的复合句What he said is true. What 不可引导定语从句。
5）误：Tom, for whose life had once been very hard, has started a company recently.
正：Tom, for whom life had once been very hard, has started a company recently.
析：上例中，介词for提前， life 应是从句部分的主语， 若先行词置于从句中应为：life had once been very hard for Tom.
6）误：Jim works in the street which she lives.
正：Jim works in the street where she lives.
析：定语从句中的谓语动词live为不及物动词， 因此先行词street 在从句中应作地点状语而非宾语，因此应用关系副词where引导从句， where相当于in which。
7）误：This is such a good palace that everyone wants to go and visit.
正：This is such a good palace as everyone wants to go and visit.
析：此定语从句中先行词a good palace 被 such修饰，且在从句中作宾语则应用关系代词as引导从句。再如：That is so difficult a problem as no one can work out. He has the same pen as I bought yesterday.

改错解析：
第一个that→ why/ for which.
句中先行词the reason在其后的定语从句he was late中应作原因状语，则应用关系副词引导从句。
去掉it
句中先行词the book在其后的定语从句作宾语，则it多余；the book后省略了关系代词which/ that
which → in which
若把句中先行词the ship放到其后的定语从句中应为they went to Shanghai in the ship. 因此应在其后的定语从句作介词宾语。
what→that 或去掉what/ all
what=all that;而且句中先行词all在其后的定语从句作宾语, 则可省略关系代词that.
that→as 或 work out → work it out
如句中先行词前面有so, such 且先行词在其后的定语从句作主语或宾语，则定语从句常用as引导。eg. It was in such a good palace as everyone wanted to go and visit that I came across the lady. 而在so +adj./adv.…….. that…….的结果状语从句中work out 应加宾语it。
showed → who showed/ that showed
句中先行词the young man在其后的定语从句showed us how to run the machine中作主语，则不可省关系代词who/ that.
when → that 或省略
It is/ was the first time…….句型中time后常用关系代词that 引导定语从句，也可省略.
them → whom
由句中逗号和句意可知，此句应为定语从句；在由后面的从句意义得知句中先行词应为the foreigners. 此句也可改为并列句：I met many foreigners in the museum and some of them can speak Chinese very well.
look → looks
由主谓一致可知，句中谓语动词look应与主语the building保持一致，应用单数。
10． whose →whom或去掉for
若把句中先行词Charle Chaplin放到其后的定语从句中应为life was hard for Charle Chaplin, 因此life应在其后的定语从句作介词宾语。另外，life和Charle Chaplin有从属关系，则可直接用关系代词whose.
