Period 4 grammar
Review the usage of –ing form.
Examine the sentences beloew and discuss
in what way the structures similar to each
other and in what way they are different
Looking carefully at the ground, I made
my way to the edge of the crater.
The –ing form used as an adverbial
Having experienced quite a few earthquakes
in Hawaii already, I didn’t take much notice.
Having + past participle (the perfect –ing
form) to refer to an action that took place before the time expressed by main verb.
1. –ing
Walking along the street, I met Mary. (= While I was walking along the street….)
Being tired , I stopped to take a rest. (= Because I was tired, ….)
Turning to the left, you will find the schoo. (= If you turn to the left, ….)
Knowing where I live, he never come to see me .(= Though he knows where I
live, ….)
I stood there, waiting for her. (= …, and waited for her.)
It rained heavily, causing severe flooding in the area.(= It rained heavily so that it caused severe flooding in the area.)
2. –ing
被动 (Having been)+p.p.
Having finished my work, I went home. (= After I had finished my work, ….)
(Having been) written in haste, the book has some faults.
My wife had a long talk with Sally,
explaining why she didn’t want the
children to play together我妻子与莎莉
的主语my wife 。) The train having gone,we had to wait another day.(the train逻辑主语 + having gone 既为独立主格结构)
Having been told many times, but he
still couldn’t understand it。 正: He was told many times, but he still
couldn’t understand it。或
Having been told many times, he still
couldn’t understand it。
Opening the drawer,he took out his
wallet. (=He opened the drawer and took
out his wallet.)
Coming into the room,he put down his
bag. (=he came into the room and put
down his bag.)
Having brushed his teeth,Mr. Brown
came downstairs for breakfast.
Brushing his teeth,
Mr. Brown came downstairs for
breakfast.
Not fearing the fire, the childtouched
and got a finger burnt.
Not knowing how to find the subway,
I asked a policeman for help.

Listening text:
Experiencing Volcanoes Close Up
Hi, I am jane small. I’ve been a volcanologist for five years but I stilll remember the first time I went into a crater. I was terrified. We were at the top of an active volcano in Alaska. The more experienced people in the group were already on the edge of the crater but I was so anxious, I could not move for a long time. I had to force myself not to panic. Eventually I managed to walk down to the others but I was still terrified.
Then I got up the courage to bend over the boiling lava and collect a sample. I was so excited about what I had done and where I was that I forgot my fear. After that I was never as frightened again, although I’m always careful. It was would be very foolish to become careless when you’re standing on a live volcano.
Hi, I am Frank Gore. I’ve been studing volcanoes for almost 10 years. The most frightening experience I’ve ever had was while flying over a volcano in Hawaii. I had just
finished making a map of the direction of the lava. Suddenly, the clouds came down really low and the helicopter Pilot couldn’t tell where we were, so she flew down below the clouds, very close to the volcano. We flew between the fiery red lava below and the thick, dark clouds above. I was so nervous my whole body was damp with sweat. I was very relieved when we finally reached our camp.
Hi, I am Sarah Tang. I’ve been studing volcanoes for almost twenty years. I’ll never forget the amazing experience I had on a
volcano in New Zealand. I was down in the crater taking measurements. We weren’t expecting any activity from the volcano, so I thought I was safe. Then suddenly, the ground under my feet began to tremble. The trembling got stronger and stronger and after about a minute, a large cloud of steam blew out of the ground. That’s when I realised I was standing on an active volcano. Believe me, I was trembling almost as much as the ground under my feet. I was very worried that the colcano might erupt while Iwas still inside it.
