第二部分:阅读理解(共25小题.第一节每小题2分,第二节每小题1分;满分45分)
第一节 阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。
A
What should you think about in trying to find your career You are probably better at some school subjects than others. These may show strengths that you can use in your work. A boy who is good at mathematics can use that in an engineering career. A girl who spells well and likes English may be good at office work. So it is important to know the subjects you do well in at school. On the other hand, you may not have any specially strong or weak subjects but your records show a general satisfactory standard. Although not all subjects can be used directly in a job, they may have indirect value. A knowledge of history is not required for most jobs but if history is one of your good subjects you will have learned to remember facts and details. This is an ability that can be useful in many jobs.
Your school may have taught you skills, such as typing or technical drawing, which you can use in your work. You may be good at metal work or cookery and look for a job where you can improve these skills.
If you have had a part-time job on Saturdays or in the summer, think what you gained from it. If nothing else, you may have learned how to get to work on time, to follow instructions and to get on with older workers. You may have learned to give correct change in a shop, for example. Just as important, you may become interested in a particular industry or career you see from the inside in a part-time job.
Facing your weak points is also part of knowing yourself. You may be all thumbs when you handle tools, perhaps you are a poor speller or cannot add up a column of figures. It is bitter to face any weaknesses than to pretend they do not exist. Your school record, for instance, may not be too good, yet it is and important part of your background. You should not be apologetic about it but instead recognize that you will have a chance of a fresh start at work.
41.Which of the following best sums up the first paragraph
A. The importance of doing well at school
B. Using school performance to help to choose a career.
C. The importance of being good at all subjects.
D. The indirect value of school work.
The writer thinks that for a student to have a part-time job is probably___.
a waste of time that could have been spent on study
useful for his future work
a good way to earn extra money
a good way to find out his weak points
According to the passage, if a student’s school record is not good, he ____.
A. will be a complete failure in his future work
will not be able to find a suitable job
will regret not having worked harder at school
may do well in his future work
Which subject is supposed to have no direct value for job hunting
Mathematics B. English C. Technical Drawing D. History
The whole passage centers on ___.
choosing a career according to what one is skilled in
acquiring knowledge by working hard at school
finding one’s strong and weak points
developing one’s abilities useful in school work

Hello, Dolly!
British scientists have done something that many people thought was impossible: they created the first clone of an adult mammal. The clone, named Dolly, is a seven-month-old sheep. Which grows from a cell of an adult female sheep.
What is a clone A clone is a copy—a genetic copy. Genes are the instructions for life. They tell a cell what to do and how to do it. Genes make each individual plant or animal different and unique. But a clone has the same genes as the original organism.
Cloning is not new. Plants have been cloned for centuries. New plants are often grown from cutting of another plant. Also, plants like pineapples, strawberries and carnations are sometimes cloned. One benefit of cloning is that we can make many copies of the best and healthiest plant.
It has been much more difficult to clone animals. Frogs have been cloned, but they died as tadpoles, never living long enough to become adult frogs. Mice, sheep and cattle have been cloned from embryos. But Dolly is the first healthy clone of an adult mammal. How did they do it
An unfertilized egg was taken from a sheep.
The egg nucleus was removed.
A cell was taken from the udder of a pregnant sheep. It was “starved”, so that it stopped growing.
The two cells were combined into one and then implanted in a third sheep, where it grew normally.
The clone was born. It was genetically identical to the pregnant sheep in step.
This sounds much easier than it actually was. To end up with one clone, the scientists started with 277 udder cells. And they needed in a way to make the egg cell accept a new nucleus. They did that by starving the cell in step.
It may soon be possible to clone many types of animals. Will we also be able to clone human organs, or even whole human beings We have only begun to think about the morality of cloning technology. Maybe the question to ask is not whether we can clone humans, but instead, should we clone humans
Dolly is a sheep ___ because she is grown from a cell of an adult female sheep.
A. that has not her father B. that has not her mother
C. that has no parents D.that has not any tail
Which of the following statements is true
A. Only plants can be cloned.
B. Only strawberries and carnations sometimes be cloned.

A. a tadpole is the early stage of a grown-up frog
B. a tadpole is a frog without a tail
C. a tadpole is a pool where frogs can live
D. a tadpole is a clone of an adult mammal
What is the right order in the process of the clone of Dolly
a. Taking an unfertilized egg from an adult female sheep.

Perhaps no single monument in the U.S.A. is as famous as the Statue of Liberty. Standing on small island in New York Harbor, the crowned lady, holding high in her right hand the torch of freedom and in her left hand a table with words "July 4th , 1776", is a symbol of American democracy. She is colossal. She is 151 feet high and the pedestal(垫座) on which she stands is almost as much. The Statue of Liberty was a gift to the USA from France in 1886, as a mark of friendship and also in memory of the aid France gave the Americans during the American Revolution.
For millions of immigrants, the Statue was their first sight of the promised land, and for a few also the last, as they sailed back home again. About a mile from Liberty Island, there is another small island, called Ellis Island, which was looked upon with dread by the immigrants. For it was here that they had to wait their turn to be examined by doctors and officials. Most of the immigrants could not speak a word of English. But only two out of 100 immigrants were refused admission to New York City. Often the person refused turned out to be a grandmother or a weary, frightened girl mistakenly labeled "weak-minded". Sometimes husbands and wives were parted because one of them happened to have a bad cough and was suspected of having tuberculosis(肺结核).
New York City was a bitter disillusionment(幻灭) to some immigrants. Far from being a city paved with gold, it was a city teeming with overcrowded, unhealthy and unsafe ghettos(少数民族居住区). The immigrants looked for earlier immigrants of their own nationality or religion. So Italian, Polish, Irish, Jewish neighborhoods grew up. Because they could not speak English, the newcomers found it difficult to get work at once, and their living quarters were often slum.
However, they found in the U.S.A. opportunities of bettering themselves. Today immigrants no longer have to endure the rude treatment of Ellis Island. The unpleasant buildings were closed down in 1924. In 1976, Ellis Island became a historic monument.
