Are mobile phones safe?一. risk: [c]冒险,危险,风险 (反)safety

二. It was found that people who used mobile phones were two and a half times more likely to have a brain tumour on the side of the head where they held their phones than people who did not use them.

1.It was found that 后接主语从句,在这里It是形式主语(empty subject), 真正的主语是that后面的内容。
2. “who used mobile phones”和“who did not use them”都是定语从句(attributive clause), 分别修饰先行词“people”。
3.“be likely to”意思是“很可能…”
eg. It is likely to be cold in March there.

concentrate on/upon eg. Xiao Ming is concentrating on reading. 小明在全神贯注地看书。

四. This study was conducted with 200 mice, half of which were exposed to radiation while the other half did not receive any radiation.

However, as one scientist has pointed out, DNA has the same qualities in all animals, and if radiation affects the genes in mice, it could also affect human genes.
然而,正如一位科学家所指出的,所有动物的DNA(脱氧核糖核酸)特性都是一样的,如果辐射对老鼠的基因有影响,那么,辐射同样对人的基因有影响。

point out: 指出 point to: 指向 point at:指着
句中“as one scientist has pointed out”为非限制性定语从句,as为关系代词,指代后面的主句部分。1 eg. As the teacher has said, detective stories are popular among boy students.

6. For years, the cigarette companies would not acknowledge that cancer is associated with smoking, but now we all know that it is.

acknowledge: 承认 (=admit)
“be associated with”意思为:“与…有联系”;“与…有关”
eg. Cocktail is usually associated with the USA.

Perfume is usually associated with France.

7. Can we have faith in them and believe that they are being honest.
我们能信任他们,相信他们是诚实的吗?
“have faith in”意思为“信任”;“相信”
eg. We still have faith in Jack despite his shortcomings.
