Long long ago, there was an old merchant(商人)who had three sons. “To which one shall I leave my fortune ” he wondered, “It must be to the cleverest son. But which one is the cleverest ”
He called his three sons to him. “Here is the money,” he told them, “You must each take one coin to buy something that will fill this room. Anyone who can do this shall have my fortune.”
“It is a big room,” said the eldest son.
“One coin will not buy very much,” said the second son.
But the youngest son said nothing. He stood and thought, and then he smiled, “Come, brothers,” he said, “let us go to the market.”
The eldest son bought straw with his coin. But one coin bought only a bit of straw. Even when he had spread it as much as he could, the straw covered only a corner of the room.
The second son bought sand with his coin. But one coin bought only a bit of sand. Even when he had spread it as much as he could, the sand covered only half of the floor.
“What did you buy ” the eldest son asked angrily, “You don’t have any sand.”
“I bought this,” said the youngest son.
“A candle!” cried his brothers. “What good is a candle ”
“Watch,” said the youngest son.
He lit the candle, and all at once the room was filled from wall to wall, from ceiling to floor. It was filled with light!

The medical world is gradually realizing that the quality of the environment of hospitals may play an important role in helping patients to get better.
As part of a nationwide effort in Britain to bring art out of the museum and into public places, some of the country’s best artists have been called in to change older hospitals and to soften(软化)the hard edges of modern buildings. Of the 2,500 National Health Service hospitals in Britain, almost 100 now have very valuable collections of present art in passages (走廊),waiting areas and treatment rooms.
These recent movements were first started by one artist, Peter Senior, who set up his studio at a Manchester hospital on north-eastern England during the early 1970s. He felt the artist had lost his place in modern society, and that art should be enjoyed by a wider audience.
A common hospital waiting room might have as many as 5,000 visitors each week. What a better place to hold regular exhibitions of art! Senior held the first exhibition of his own paintings in the outpatients (门诊病人) waiting area of the Manchester Royal Hospital in 1975. Believed to be Britain’s first hospital artist, Senior was so much in demand that he was soon joined by a team of young art school graduates.
The effect is striking. Now in the passages and waiting rooms the visitor experiences a full view of fresh colors, playful images and restful (宁静的) country yards.
The quality of the environment may reduce the need for expensive drugs when a patient is recovering (康复) from an illness. A study had shown that patients who had a view onto garden needed half the number of strong pain killers (止痛药) compared with patients who had no view at all or only brick wall (砖墙)to look at.
5. Some best artists have been gathered to________.
A. pull down older hospitals and build up new ones
B. make the corners of the hospital buildings round
C. bring art into hospitals D. help patients recover from illness
6. Peter Senior is ________.
A. one of the best artists in Britain B. a pioneer in introducing art into hospitals
C. one of the young art school graduates
D. a kind painter who brings only his paintings into hospitals
7. From this passage, we’ve learnt that _______.
A. artists in Britain have completely lost their places in modern society
B. patients should be encouraged to learn art
C. hospitals in Britain should be changed into art museums
D. art should be encouraged in British hospitals
8. After the improvement of the hospital environment, patients _______.
A. no longer need drugs to kill their pains B. needn’t buy any expensive drugs
C. need fewer pain killers when recovering from illness D. can take fewer pills each time
C
Do you have bright ideas Ideas for inventions that change society or, at least, make life easier for somebody Perhaps, we all do sometimes, but we don’t often make the idea a reality. Recently, in Britain, there was a competition called British Designers for Tomorrow. The competition encouraged young people to carry out their bright ideas. There were two groups in the contest: Group One was for schoolchildren under 16. Group Two was for schoolchildren over 16. And there were 11 prize-winners altogether.
Neil Hunt was one of the prize-winners. It’s important to be able to record sunshine accurately (精确地) when people study the weather. We need to know how many hours of sunshine we have and how strong it is. Most sunshine recorders only record direct sunshine. Neil’s is more accurate and this is very important for research into ways of using solar power (太阳能). With his prize of 100 dollars, Neil plans to carry on inventing more.
You can do so much with animation (动画). Look at Simon West’s idea for animated road signs. He uses pictures which appear to be moving as you go nearer to or farther from them. This is not a new idea, but it is new to use these pictures on road signs. “We found that people were more likely to see moving signs,” said Simon. So now, you can really see rocks falling, trains moving, horses running or a car falling over the edge of a cliff (悬崖). Quite a warning.
The ideas in the competition are so inventive that we are surprised that British industry doesn’t ask more school children for suggestions. Perhaps, this will be the start of “pupil power”.
9. In this passage, the writer holds that people seldom _______.
A. have bright ideas B. turn their bright ideas into reality
C. make their life easier D. think of inventing something
10. The organizers of the competition hoped that the schoolchildren who took part in it would _______.
A. become good designers for the future B. invent something for immediate use
C. design something useful for the next day D. win as many prizes as they could
11. Neil Hunt’s design would finally lead to the improvement of the way of _______.
A. recording direct sunshine B. recording the hours of sunshine
C. using the energy of the sun D. knowing how strong sunlight is
12. What’s the use of Simon West’s animated road signs
A. To warn people to be careful while walking.
B. To warn people on the roads of the danger ahead.
C. To add something more to the beauty of a city.
D. To help make a car trip more exciting.
13. The writer seems to be encouraging the British industry to _______.
A. take better care of schoolchildren
B. help schoolchildren in their studies
C. stop asking schoolchildren for suggestions
D. pay more attention to schoolchildren’s inventive power
D
The success of Pickwick Papers (《匹克威克外传》)made Dickens very popular. He suddenly found himself at 24 the most famous novelist of his day. Busy as his social life was, he worked on two novels at the same time -Oliver Twist (《雾都孤儿》)and Pickwick Papers. He was particularly proud of Pickwick Papers, which was a huge success and was regarded as a comedy masterpiece(杰作). “If I were to live a hundred years and write novels in each, I should never be so proud of any of them as I am (proud) of Pickwick Papers.”
It has been said of Dickens that he gripped(控制) the imagination of his readers because his imagination gripped himself. The people in his works were so real that they could make him laugh or cry. When writing Oliver Twist, he said that he couldn’t rest until Fagin, the wrong-doer, had been hanged(绞死).
Dickens’ marriage to Catherine Hagarth, with whom he had nine children, ended unhappily in 1858. He started to travel about giving readings of his works. His interest in theatre gave his novels the qualities that made them suitable for reading aloud on the stage. A tiring travel to the United States affected his health. On June 9, 1870, when he was working on a new novel, he died, as he had wished. He said that he wanted to die working.
14. It seems clear that Dickens became a famous novelist _______.
A. because of his social work B. with the success of Pickwick Papers
C. because he was writing 2 novels at the same time
D. when he began to give readings of his works
15. According to this passage, we know that Dickens _______.
A. was only interested in writing novels B. didn’t like Oliver Twist
C. wished to live 100 years and write three novels in each
D. didn’t think that he could write a better novel than Pickwick Papers in his life
16. As a novelist, Dickens _______.
A. was full of imagination B. found it hard to satisfy his readers
C. always wrote about real people in life
D. wrote books according to his readers’ imagination
17. From this passage, we can see that Fagin must be _______.
A. a person in real life B. a character in Oliver Twist
C. a character in Pickwick Papers D. one of Dickens’ works
18. Which of the following is true
A. Dickens had always enjoyed his marriage to Catherine Hegarth.
B. Dickens was a successful actor.
C. Dickens’ death had little to do with his hard work.
D. Dickens had wished to die in the course of work.

The Channel Islands are a group of British-owned islands lying in the English Channel, 10 to 30 miles from the English coast. There are ten islands with a total land area of 75 square miles and a total population of 123,000. The three largest islands, Jersey, Guernsey and Alderney, have long been known for the fine breeds(品种) of cattle that are raised on the islands and named after them.
In earliest known history the islands were considered part of Normandy, which was part of France, but the ruler of Normandy(诺曼底) became king of England in 1066, and from then on the islands were looked upon as British land. English control was unbroken until World War II, when the Germans held the islands for five years.
