Review the usage of –ing form
below. Examine the sentences and discuss in what way the structures similar to each other and in what
way they are different.Looking carefully at the ground, I made
my way to the edge of the crater.Having experienced quite a few earthquakes
in Hawaii already, I didn’t take much notice. The –ing form used as an adverbial.Having + past participle (the perfect -ing
form) to refer to an action that took place before the time expressed by main verb.
(Having been) written in haste, the book has some faults.
My wife had a long talk with Sally,
explaining why she didn’t want the
children to play together.
Having been told many times, but he
still couldn’t understand it.正: He was told many times, but he still
couldn’t understand it. 或
Having been told many times, he still
Opening the drawer,he took out his
wallet. (=He opened the drawer and took out his wallet.)
Coming into the room, he put down his bag. (=He came into the room and put down his bag.)
Having brushed his teeth, Mr. Brown
came downstairs for breakfast.
Brushing his teeth,
Mr. Brown came downstairs for
breakfast.
Not fearing the fire, the child touched
and got a finger burnt. Not knowing how to find the subway,
I asked a policeman for help. Rewrite the sentences using the

Hi, I am Jane Small. I’ve been a volcanologist for five years but I still remember the first time I went into a crater. I was terrified. We were at the top of an active volcano in Alaska. The more experienced people in the group were already on the edge of the crater but I was so anxious, I could not move for long time. I had to force myself not to panic. Eventually I managed to walk down to the others but I was still terrified. Then I got up the courage to bend over the boiling lava and collect a sample. I was so excited about what I had done and where I was that I forgot my fear. After that I was never as frightened again, although I’m always careful. It would be very foolish to become careless when you’re standing on a live volcano.
Hi, I am Frank Gore. I’ve been studying volcanoes for almost 10 years. The most frightening experience I’ve ever had was while flying over a volcano in Hawaii. I had justfinished making a map of the direction of the lava. Suddenly, the clouds came down really low and the helicopter pilot couldn’t tell where we were, so she flew down below the clouds, very close to the volcano. We flew between the fiery red lava below and the thick, dark clouds above. I was so nervous my whole body was damp with sweat. I was very relieved when we finally reached our camp.
Hi, I am Sarah Tang. I’ve been studying volcanoes for over twenty years. I’ll never forget the amazing experience I had on a volcano in New Zealand. I was down in the crater taking measurements. We weren’t expecting any activity from the volcano, so I thought I was safe. Then suddenly, the ground under my feet began to tremble. The trembling got stronger and stronger and after about a minute, a large cloud of steam blew out of the ground. That’s when I realized I was standing on an active volcano. Believe me, I was trembling almost as much as the ground under my feet. I was very worried that the volcano might erupt while I was still inside it.Ex: speaking
