Scientists believe they have found the world’s funniest joke.
The research refers to Travel Abroad, a website, including 40,000 printable jokes, more than 2 million humorous stories from 70 countries, a year’s break down of humor by age, sex and nationality, and a brain scan of someone who is listening to the jokes.
Laughlab, a great experiment set up more than a year ago, proved that the British, Irish and Australians prefer a play on words; the French, Danes and Belgians have a taste for the surreal(超现实主义的); Americans and Canadians like to laugh quietly at jokes, which shows one group’s superiority over another.
The winning joke, the product of long international selection, was posted by Gurpal Gosall, a 31-year-old psychiatrist from Manchester, England.
The joke goes like this:
A couple of New Jersey hunters are out in the woods when one of them falls to the ground. He doesn’t seem to be breathing; his eyes are rolled back in his head. The other fellow whips out his mobile phone and calls the emergency services. He gasps to the operator, “My friend is dead! What can I do ” The operator, in a calm voice says, “Just take it easy. It is often said that differences between people can be caused by the time when people were born. For example, people who were born between March 21and April 20 are supposed to be active, daring, and strong. They like power and enjoy adventures. They think quickly and have strong wills. On the other hand, those who were born between April 21and May 20 are supposed to learn more slowly, but they remember what they learn. They love children, and they usually have many friends.
People born between May 21and June 21 are bright and interesting. They like to talk, and they enjoy wearing fine clothes. Those born between June 22and July 22, on the other hand, think deeply. They would rather hide their feelings than express them.
People who were born between July 23 and August 22 are generally proud. They are interested in many subjects, and it is interesting to hear them talk.
Those born between August 23 and September 22 are said to be calm and thoughtful. They like to read and often become successful scientists. Those who were born between September 23and October 22 seldom become excited. They love beauty and have a great desire to learn. And those born between October 23and November 21are often admired because they learn quickly and can express their ideas easily.
It is said that people born between November 22and December 21 enjoy meeting strangers, and they are able to command those around them, while people born between December 22 and January 19 have strong feelings, which they are quick to express.
People who were born between January 20 and February 18 are dreamers, and they have the power to make their dreams come true. And those born between February 19 and March 20 are successful with money, but they are also peaceful and kind.
These are some of the beliefs of astrologers, who think human differences are caused by the position of the sun, the moon and the stars.

Are British people Europeans This may seem like a strange question to Africans and Asians. They tend to think that most white men are Europeans. But the British, when they are in Britain, do not regard themselves as Europeans. The Europeans, to them, are those rather excitable foreigners from the other side of the English Channel who have never learned how to speak English. Europe is “the Continent”. It is a place full of interest for British tourists, but also the source of almost all the wars in which Britain has ever been involved. Thus, although Britain is a part of Europe, it is a separate island that has made its people feel very, very insular(保守的). They feel, and in many ways are, different from the rest of Europe and they sometimes annoy the other countries by failing to support them, or even to understand them, in times of need.
Where did the British people come from This is a very interesting question, since they are a mixture of many different races. All of these races invaded Britain at various times from Europe. Nobody knows very much about Britain before the Romans came during the first century BC, but there had been at least three invasions before that. The first of these was by dark-haired Mediterranean (地中海的) people called Iberians. The other two were by Celtic tribes. The first were the Gaels, whose descendants (后裔) are the modern Scots and Irish people, some of whom still speak the Gaelic language. The second were the Britons, who gave their name to the whole island of Britain. These were the people that the Romans conquered. The Romans gave the Britons a lot of their civilization. But because they never stayed in Britain in very large numbers, the British people survived until the Roman Empire was defeated by the barbarians. The barbarians were the different Germanic tribes that took all of the Western Europe.
69. The purpose of the passage is to _______.
talk about Europeans
discuss the origin of British people
argue that British people are the best
compare the Europeans to Africans and Asians
70. It can be learned from the passage that ________.
most people think white people are Europeans
there are many Africans and Asians living in Europe
the British people think that they are Europeans
white men are Europeans in the eyes of Africans and Asians
71. Why do the British people feel very insular
Because they are different from those people on the continent
Because they sometimes fail to support other countries in times of need.
Because they are separated geographically from the continent.
Because they are considered to be very difficult to understand
72. Which of the following might be discussed after this passage
The Germanic tribes that invaded Britain.
The civilization that the Romans gave Britain.
The Romans who did not settle in Britain.
The survival of the British people in the first century BC.
D
Fear is a fact of life. Like anger and love, it is a feeling in your brain that you cannot get rid of, but you can do a lot to control it.
You think that you cannot do something well, and you are afraid you will mess it up or something bad will happen. Here’s an example. Let’s say I ask you to walk down a normal sidewalk that is a block long, and I offer to pay you $100 if you do it without falling off the sidewalk. You would say to me, “No problem!” You can walk on the sidewalk without difficulty. You do it every day. You would probably run to the other end and then collect your money.
Now let’s say I take that same sidewalk and I put it between two towers and I ask you to walk across between the towers. You are now 1,400 feet in the air. The simple act of “walking on the sidewalk” suddenly becomes terrifying. What’s the difference There is no difference in fact. But if you trip on a sidewalk, you hurt your knees. Trip when you are 1,400 feet in the air and you plunge (跌落) to your death. Your brain takes the risk in and produces a large “terror” signal.
That same terror signal kicks in in a lot of different situations. This is why we admire great athletes. Think about a golfer. He is on the 18th hole of the Masters tournament(锦标赛). Fifteen million people are watching. If he makes this putt(击球入洞) he wins. If he misses it he loses. The thing we respect at that moment is not his ability at golf. We honor him for controlling his fear and making the putt. Sports teach you to control your fear under pressure.
One thing you can do to control fear is practice. If you were to practice walking on sidewalks at various heights and work your way up to a skyscraper, rather than trying a skyscraper, it would be a lot easier. By practicing you build up your skills and confidence. You learn about different situations that can arise and you learn how to control them. Eventually, you get where you have seen all the possible failure points and have faced fear hundreds of times and you can handle it.
Confidence gives you the ability to control fear, and you should understand it as a human emotion and use it.
73. The purpose of the two examples given by the writer is to _________.
show that we are afraid of falling down
tell us how to control fear
compare two different situations
explain why we sometimes have fear in mind
74. We admire great athletes mainly because __________.
they can control their fear under pressure B. they are quite skilled
C.they build up confidence while performing D. they are faced with lots failures
75. What does the underlined word “trip” in Paragraph 3 mean
A. Go on a journey. B. Take a walk.
C. Fall down to the ground. D. Run away.
76. The main idea of the passage is __________.
the more you practice, the better you perform
practice makes perfect
you can control fear though you can’t get rid of it
fear is a kind of unconfident feeling

As Wallace lay in bed recovering from injuries in World War I, he found there was a wealth of interesting information to read and absorb. Realizing few people would have the time to get through all this information, he knew exactly what to do. In 1920 , the young American presented a sample magazine containing condensed (浓缩的) articles to publishers across America. But all turned him down.
He was not discouraged, Wallace and his wife Lila published the first issue of Reader’s Digest in February, 1922. Working from home, the Wallaces printed 5,000 copies, which were sold by mail to 1,500 subscribers (订户) and priced 25 cents. From these humble beginnings grew the world’s most widely read magazine.
The magazine flourished. In 1938, the first international edition was published in the United Kingdom. During World War II, editions were published for the first time in Latin America and Sweden. After the war Reader’s Digest moved into many other countries. In 1986, video was added to the Reader’s Digest product.
In 1973, the Wallaces gave up active management of Reader’s Digest. Wallace died in 1981 aged 91; Lila in 1984 aged 94. With no heirs (继承人) to the Wallace empire to take over, Reader’s Digest became a public company in the early 1990s.
Reader’s Digest is one of the most successful publishing stories in the history of global magazine. It now appears in 48 editions in 19 languages, English, French, Norwegian, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese, Chinese, Russian, Czech, Slovak, Polish, Hungarian, Thai, Korean, Finnish, Danish, German, Dutch and Swedish, with just under 100 million readers every month.
Reader’s Digest is one of the most reliable sources of information available. Hours of research go into providing articles of lasting endurance with every fact, figure and quote in the magazine thoroughly checked.
77. How did Wallace come up with the idea of starting a magazine
He wanted to make a living.
He thought there was not enough for people to read.
He found that people couldn’t get enough information.
He wanted to help people to get as much information with less time.
78. Which of the following is TRUE about Reader’s Digest
It first appeared in 1920.
In the beginning, it was printed in Wallace’s home.
Its first international edition was published in Latin America.
It was popular until 1938.
79. What do the underlined words “turned him down” in the First Paragraph mean
A. appreciated him B. refused him
C. accepted him D. scolded him
80. From the passage, we can infer that ______.
A. Wallace and his wife were born in the same year
the information carried by Reader’s Digest doesn’t need to be checked
Japanese readers can read Reader’s Digest in their native language
Reader’s Digest is now managed by Wallace’s son.

Is it good for students to watch TV
We had a discussion about whether it is good for students to watch TV last week.
Some students think it is good for us because TV is now playing such an important role in our lives that we can’t imagine what our lives will be without TV. What’s more, watching TV is more convenient and cheaper than any other outdoor activities. Finally, it keeps us informed of current affairs of the world.
On the contrary, other students think we are very busy with our studies and watching TV is a waste of time. Students who are addicted to TV programmes often forget their meals, sleep or even lessons. At the same time, there is too much violence on TV. Students are too young to judge what is right and what is wrong. And they are easy to learn something harmful.
As far as I’m concerned , watching TV is of great help if we can make good use of it.
