The porter, however, could not understand me. I repeated my question several times and at last he understood. He answered me, but he spoke neither slowly nor clearly. ’I am a foreigner.’ I said. Then he spoke slowly, but I could not understand him. My teacher never spoke English like that! The porter and I looked at each other and smiled. Then he said something and I understood it. ‘You will soon learn English!’ he said. I wonder. In England, each person speaks a different language. Dear Fiona,
Thanks for reading our newspaper for a long time. You say that you weigh 265 pounds and have tried almost every method to lose weight, but it didn’t work. I wonder if you have tried exercise. All of the fashionable diets that you may have tried will only decrease your metabolism(新陈代谢) or slow down your body’s ability to burn fat. You need to eat a well-balanced diet—low in fat, low in sugar and high in fibre(纤维素). A well-balanced diet and exercise are the keys to fitness and weight loss.
If you are new to exercise, try to walk five times per week for about 30 minutes each time. Try to do as much exercise as you can. Even walking home from school or around a mall is a kind of exercise. If you want to keep it social, you could ask a friend to join you or take an exercise class.
You need to keep on exercising so that our body gets the chance to make a change. If you can find a sport of an activity that you enjoy, that would be even better. Good luck!
Best wishes, and if you have any other problems, please write to me and I will try my best to help you.
Yours,
Tom Smith

I found out one time that doing a favor for someone could get you into a lot of trouble. I was in the eighth grade at the time, and we were having a final test. During the test, the girl sitting next to me whispered something, but I didn’t understand. So I leaned over her way and found out that she was trying to ask me if I had an extra pen. She showed me that hers was out of ink and would not write. I happened to have an extra one, so I took it out of my pocket and put it on her desk.
Later, after the test papers had been turned in, the teacher asked me to stay in the room when all the other students were dismissed. As soon as we were alone she began to talk to me about what it meant to grow up; she talked about how important it was to stand on your own two feet and be responsible for your own acts. For a long time, she talked about honesty and emphasized the fact that when people do something dishonest, they are really cheating themselves. She made me promise that I would think seriously about all the things she had said, and then she told me I could leave. I walked out of the room wondering why she had chosen to talk to me about all those things.
Later on, I found out that she thought I had cheated on the test. When she saw me lean over to talk to the girl next to me, it looked as if I was copying answers from the girl’s test paper. I tried to explain about the pen, but all she could say was it seemed very very strange to her that I hadn’t talked of anything about the pen the day she talked to me right after the test. Even if I tried to explain that I was just doing the girl a favor by letting her use my pen, I am sure she continued to believe that I had cheated on the test.

Special Care for Your Ears
Compared to the other parts of the body, your ears don’t ask for much. They don’t need to be brushed once or twice a day like your teeth. But they do need some special care, especially if you like listening to music with earphones.
Maybe your mum or dad has told you, “Turn that down before you go deaf!” Well, they are quite right. Loud noise might cause hearing less for a short time or even forever.
Think that earphones are a good way to escape from your parents’ eyes Well, it may not be as good a way as you expect. American doctors have studied a group of 44,000 people who used earphones more than 15 hours per week. The doctors found that 37,000 of them were getting hearing problems.
If you use earphones for too long a time, your ears might feel painful. You could also lose your hearing for the rest of your life. So don’t wear your earphones too long. Use them less than one hour a day. If you have to bear sharp hearing, do take care of your ears.

My Choice
It was a warm April day when I received a letter from the only college I had ever imagined attending. I opened it. My eyes were fixed on the word “congratulations”. I don’t remember ever smiling so wide.
Then I looked at the cost of Dream School’s tuition(学费). It was around $40.000. I could not afford it. And I knew three other fine colleges were offering me free tuition, even if they weren’t as famous as my first choice.
My dear parents understood my dream and how I felt. They told me I could go wherever I would be happy, even though it would be a financial problem. But I was always careful with money.
Considering my parents’ financial difficulties, I decided to have a look at one of the schools that offered me a full ride.
The president of the college talked about the activities on campus. He also made it clear that free food would be offered if I was here. As he spoke, I began to know that this school, though not as good as my first choice, might be the best one for me. It seemed small yet with many great programs. It seemed challenging.
As I walked out that door, a feeling of comfort washed over me. Looking at the college that night, I realized that I would be spending the next four years here.
In all honesty, my university is not as well-known as my “dream”university. However, it turned out to be the right choice of schools for me.
57. How did the author feel when he started to read the letter

D. would charge me nothing for tuition
60. What does the author mainly want to say
A.. You should try your best to attend your dream school.
B. You should consider comfort in your choice of schools.
C. Your second-choice college may be your best choice.
D.Your choice of schools should be based on their fame.

六、书面表达(满分30分)
Dear editor,
I'm writing to tell you about the discussion we've had about whether it is necessary for middle school students to carry mobile phones to school.
The majority of the students think that it is more convenient for them to keep in touch with their parents and classmates if they have a mobile phone. And what's more, it's a fashion.
However, most teachers think that middle school students are not old enough to control themselves. It is a waste of time for students to play games and send messages to each other by mobile phones. Also, it's easy to cause the students to vie with each other. Besides, they can make phone calls by using public phones on the campus if necessary.
In my opinion, following the fashion is understandable. But as middle school students, we should put all our heart into our studies.
