Geena David knew she wanted to be a movie star when she was very young. She was not sure what gave her the idea, but she wanted to look like a movie star. “I have a lot of pictures from my childhood of me wearing sunglasses,” she says. “I used to wear them to watch TV.”
Early movie actors started wearing sunglasses not because they looked good, but because their eyes hurt. The lights used on movie sets were extremely bright and could cause a painful problem known as “Klieg eyes”. It was named after the Klieg brothers who invented the lights. Actors wore sunglasses to give their eyes a rest. But when movie stars began wearing their sunglasses in public, they quickly became a must.
Eventually actors started wearing sunglasses in their movies as well as on the street. Audrey Hephburn wore ultra-cool Ray-Ban sunglasses in the 1961 movie, Breakfast at Tiffany’s. As a result, Ray-Ban sunglasses started to appear more and more in the movies. In 1979, Ray-Ban “Wayfarers” were worn by Jake and Elwood in The Blue Brothers. Tom Cruise wore Ray-Ban “Aviator” sunglasses in the 1986 hit, Top Gun. Then in 1997, Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones made Ray-Ban “Predator” sunglasses famous in Men in Black.
Of course sunglasses aren’t just a fashion statement. The main reason to wear sunglasses is to protect our eyes against UV radiation. UV radiation can damage our eyes, so people now choose their sunglasses carefully. But you don’t have to give up style for safety. The choice of frames and lenses available these days is huge. So you can protect your eyes and still be the coolest person on the beach.

Friends play an important part in our lives, and although we may take friendship for granted(认为……理所当然), we often don’t clearly understand how to make friends. While we get on well with a number of people, we are usually friends with only a very few — for example, the average among students is about 6 per person. In all the cases of friendly relationships, two people like one another and enjoy being together, but beyond that, the degree of intimacy(亲密) between them and the reasons for their shared interests vary(变化) greatly. As we get to know people, we take into account things like age, race, economic condition, social position, and intelligence. Although these factors(因素) are not of great importance, it is more difficult to get on with people when there is a marked difference in age and background.
Some friendly relationships can be kept on argument and discussion, but it is usual for close friends to have similar ideas and beliefs, the same opinions and interests — they often talk about “being on the same wavelength”. It generally takes time to reach this point. And the more intimately involved people become, the more they depend on one another. People who want to be friends have to learn to put up with annoying habits and to stand differences.
In contrast(比较) with marriage, there are no friendship ceremonies to strengthen the association(友谊) between two people. But the supporting and understanding of each other that results from shared experiences and emotions does seem to create a powerful bond, which can overcome differences in background, and break down barriers(障碍) of age, class or race.
76. According to the passage, ______.
A. friends are those who must share their interests
B. friends are closer than people who just get on with each other
C. all the people know how to make friends
D. every student has six friends
77. We can learn from the passage that ______.
A. friendship can overcome all differences between two people
B. there are no special ceremonies to strengthen friendship
C. standing differences in opinion can lead to friendship
D. friendship can be strengthened by smiles and soft voices
78. When people talk about “being on the same wavelength”, they mean that they ______.
watch the same TV programs
B. are the same in all ways
C. have the same background
D. share the same way of thinking and the same interests
79. Which of the following is NOT implied in the passage
A. Even friends may have different opinions.
B. Friends never argue with each other.
C. It generally takes time for people to become close friends.
D. Someone’s habits may annoy his friends.
