Not only does pollution exist in developing countries, but also in developed countries. In fact, the studies show that drinking water in the United States is not completely clean. It is not as safe as most Americans think it is.
Reporter Jane Brody wrote about the problem in the New York Times newspaper. Her report noted that pollution comes from many sources. For example, surface water in rivers and lakes is polluted by agricultural chemicals. The chemicals wash off the land when it rains. The southern city of New Orleans, Louisiana, gets its drinking water from the Mississippi River. But the water there is polluted by agricultural chemicals flowing down from middle western states.
Surface water is also polluted by salts and asbestos(石棉) used to melt ice on roads. Surface water pollution is not a new problem in the United States, but another pollution problem is new and growing. It is the pollution of underground water supplies. As Jane Brody noted in the new York Times, Americans always thought their huge underground lakes were unending supplies of clean water. The best drinking water came from wells put directly into those lakes. This is no longer true.
Ground water is polluted by agricultural chemicals sinking through the soils. It is also polluted by human wastes and extremely poisonous industrial chemicals. The wastes and chemicals leak out of storage containers. Some of the chemicals may cause cancer.
In 1974, Congress passed the Safe Drinking Water Act. The law made limits on the amount of chemicals permitted in America’s water.
Which is NOT true according to this article
A. Most of the people in the U.S.A. think that their drinking water is very clean.
B. There is water pollution in industrial countries, too.
C. Water pollution is caused by many things.
D. The people in New Orleans directly drink the river water, which is polluted by middle western states.
Which is not the cause of water pollution according to this article
A. Melting ice B. Chemical fertilizers.
C. Wastes from WC. D. Industrial chemicals
“Unending supplies of clean water”, which appears in the third paragraph, means ________.
A. supplies of good water for drinking
B. supplies of water without pollution for a short time
C. supplies of nice water which has not been used yet.
D. supplies of clean water for ever which has not been polluted
The 1974 Act passed by Congress ________.
A. forbade people to drink underground water
B. made it a rule that when chemicals in water reach a certain level it couldn’t be drunk
C. didn’t permit people to drink the water with any chemicals
D. prevent people from drinking any polluted water, even if it is only slightly polluted

The snow is melting and the sun begins to beat down. The long days of winter are coming to a close. But where are the birds, bugs, and tulips Earth is strangely silent. This is the gloom (灾难) that Rachel Carson feared would come if humans didn’t start to take better care of Earth! Her famous book, Silent Spring, sent a warning to the world.
The Making of an Environmentalist
As a small child, Rachel Carson loved to wander on her family’s farm. She studied the many types of plants and animals that lived there. She kept this love for nature in her heart her whole life.
Rachel Carson began her writing career in the fourth grade. Her story “A Battle in the Clouds” appeared in a children’s magazine. It paid her a penny for each word. Rachel received a silver badge for her story. It meant more to her than any paycheck she ever earned for writing.
Combining Talents
Rachel Carson studied hard in school. She earned a college scholarship. She studied English and biology. She earned another scholarship for graduate school. After college, Carson went on to work for the Bureau of Fisheries.
Making a Difference
Rachel Carson’s greatest impact was her book Silent Spring. This book inspired the environmental movement in America. In it, she warned against using DDT, a powerful chemical used to kill insects.
The public took sides on the issue. The pesticide industry was very angry about the things Carson wrote. The government took Carson’s side. The President’s Science Advisory Committee reviewed the book. They supported her ideas. This led to the establishment of the Environmental Protection Agency. The use of DDT was eventually banned in the United States.
After her death, Rachel Carson’s friends and colleagues formed the Rachel Carson Council. Their goal is to help others develop a sense of wonder and respect towards nature. The council has gathered data on health and the environmental effects of pesticides for over 35 years.
Rachel earned her second scholarship for ________.

Everyone has got two personalities(个性)-one is shown to the world, the other is secret and real. You don’t show your secret personality when you’re awake because you can control your behavior, but when you’re asleep, your sleeping position shows the real you. In a normal night, of course, people often change their positions. The important position is the one that you go to sleep in.
If you go to sleep on your back, you normally trust people and you are easily influenced by fashion or new ideas. You don’t like to displease people, so you never express your real feelings. You’re quite shy and you aren’t quite sure of yourself.
If you sleep on your stomach, you are rather secretive person. You worry a lot and you’re always easily upset. You always stick to your own opinions or judgements, but you don’t raise your hopes too much. You usually live for today not tomorrow. This means that you enjoy having a good time.
If you sleep curled up, you are probably a very nervous person. You have a low opinion of yourself and so you’re often defensive. You’re shy and you don’t normally like meeting people. You prefer to be on your own. You’re easily hurt.
If you sleep on your side, you have usually got a well balanced personality. You know you strengths and weaknesses. You’re usually careful. You believe in yourself. You sometimes feel anxious, but you don’t often get sad. You always say what you think even if it makes others angry.
According to the passage, a person, who is not willing to change his mind and hard to deal with, probably sleeps ______.
A. on his side B. on his back C. curled up D. on his stomach
